Hi guys

I'm new here! so first things first, hello! and I love the site!
I've been googling a lot recently to read up about tools as I'm shopping for christmas presents for my father.

I found the majority of the links i've been clicking on to read up about my searches has been links to this forum! so I thought it would be wise to make an account on here!

A little info about me one of my biggest issues is I'm very indecisive because I'm always worried I'm not making the best decision :headscrat :headscrat :headscrat, so hopefully that's where you guys will be willing and able to help me :)

My dilemma: my dad is a tool guy, he has all sorts, but he always opts for the cheaper tool yet is always talking about rather having something nicer and something made in japan or germany "because they're quality tools". He's the handyman of the house, he was trained to be a mechanical engineer, electrician, car painter so he has some tools for everything but they're pretty aged and battered (but a lot of them are still working properly so I guess they are "quality"?)

Anyhow I thought for this Christmas I would buy him something Made in Germany & Japan.

I was looking at some Fein cordless combo sets like the Multimaster + 14V Drill or the 1/2" impact drill + 18v hammer drill

Also some tools from Nepros, the wooden screwdriver set + 1/2" sockets & ratchet set

I've ordered the Nepros items but I'm hesitant on the Fein power tools for multiple reasons

1) because I'm not sure what he would get more use out of the multimaster or the impact drill (i know i would enjoy use of the impact drill lol)

2) I found a thread in this forum where Monte related that only the ASCM line Fein drills are Made in Germany and the rest are Made in China! so this wouldn't fulfill my gift plan of a Made in Germany / Japan tool :/
also the problem with that is it doesn't look like there are any combo sets which include the ASCM drils :/

so now the only other brands I know of that's cordless and Made in Germany is Festool and I believe I read Metabo offer some as well (only their high end?)

But my problem is is that If I keep researching in all directions and come up on dead ends or other options then I'm going to take too long to order items in time for Christmas

So I'm hoping you guys could throw me in one direction? for a couple cordless Made in Germany tools hopefully under $600 for both?

Also if I simply order individual Fein tools do they come in a Fein toolbox or is that only for their "sets" ???

I'm hoping to get 1 drill and 1 unique tool but at this point I'm about ready to get him anything or simply give him the nepros items and leave it at that :/

If it helps I'm in Vancouver, Canada but have no problem picking up items from the States

I know it's a long post but I didn't want to seem like one of those insincere spammers that will just post and leave and i wanted to provide as much info as I could imagine being necessary :/

Thanks so much! even just for reading! and I look forward to reading all replies even criticisms if any

Does it have to be power tools? I know there are plenty of german and japanese hand tools but I dont know of many power tools not made in china now a days. Has there been anything he said he needed?

If he needs a drill, I would definately say get him a good drill. Definately my most used power tool. If you want to settle for non german and quality, everyone here will say Milwaukee m-18 fuel drill

Hey thanks for the replies guys

well I've ordered him some hand tools (the nepros screwdrivers & ratchet/socket set)

he hasn't hinted at a thing, he never does, and i typically just buy him computer parts so i was hoping to go for something different this time and getting power tools seems like something he would really enjoy but other than that i'm :headscrat

How about a set of chopsticks tucked into the pocket of some new lederhosen?

lol, that could work if i don't find anything else lol

I was checking out Festools website and discovered the Vecturo and it looks pretty great, I want it even, and I don't think he has an oscillator, I know he used to but I just took a peak in the garage and I don't see one so that's on the list now too to contemplate :/

I'm not sure if he'll like the fact that it's not cordless though and I'm not sure if all Festool tools are Made in Germany?

From a cursory search i understand it was designed by, or based on, the Fein supercut

It's within budget but then it would only be 1 tool...I'd like to get him 2 to kind of cover my bases in case he finds he doesn't need 1 maybe he'll find enjoyment in the other :/

thanks so much

Power tools it's hilti, however they have a snap on type pricing... 2yrs no questions asked (Believe me this is a big warranty for a tool that get used 4hrs a day and hard)
on the job service if you jobsite is big enough.

German
Wiha
knipex

with $600 you could get
Hilti sid 18v impact $419

knipex Cobra $35
knipex pliers wrench $45-60 depending which one
knipex 9in linesman comforgrip $30
knipex 10in diagonal cutter $25

Those are some serious tools, which people with 20yrs experience on a jobsite will admire

here is a cool and low cost tool from Japan that I bet he does not have - it will save him next time he has a buggered up screw he cannot remove and is losing patience - look at the end of the pliers and you can realize how these would do amazing things to something you cannot get a bite into any other way:

(not only made in Japan, but shipped from Japan!)

thanks so much, that does sound like a good warranty from Hilti and their tools seem easier to purchase hmm this is going to have me :headscrat for the rest of the day lol

I was thinking about getting him a set of knipex esd pliers but couldn't work it in the budget with what i had planned earlier but this way it could definitely work (he loves his stanley pliers though he's had em since before i was born but they still seem new)

thanks!

you're right he doesn't have one of those! specifically remember him having quite a time getting some screws out on a project recently

and I can definitely work that in regardless of what I end up getting

thank you very much! ordered! :rocker:

Hey guys

Thanks for all the help! I don't think I'd have come to a decision by now without it!

Just thought I'd update you all on what I went with

Nepros wooden screwdriver set with case + the 1/2" socket + ratchet set
although I only found out recently that my dad actually has a lot of Easco ratchets/sockets that are still going strong after 30+ years....(so maybe i'll keep the socket set for myself lol)

Festool CXS+attachments wanted to go for a larger one but with a budget to consider I went smaller + my dad doesn't have any compact drills (large corded and cordless)

8 NWS Pliers/Cutters from Ash @ german hand tools I wish i could have gotten more but I'm already breaking the budget with that :/ (wanted to go Knipex as suggested but these were easier to order online and cheaper than local knipex prices)

1 Neji-Saurus :D

Thanks so much guys I hope he likes it

Happy Holidays
