Stanley and Mac tools are the same company and I rate the tools a a good middle quality. Thats a decent set but keep in mind that almost anything automotive is not metric so be sure it has what he might need. I've seen that set for about $75 on ebay and on sale in stores. Give it to him but even better show him how to use them and to take care of them.

I don;t know what part of the world you live in racerbob, but currently, almost every automotive fastener used today IS indeed metric. Old skool muscle cars and 80's and earlier cars, yes, SAE. but most everything today is metric. As is bicycle hardware and most electronics.

That said, that Stanley set, or a comparable Channel Lock or even Craftsman set would be awesome to anyone as a starter set.

That $100 gets you most everything you need aside from hammers, pliers and screwdrivers. Not cheap, per se', but nothing I would shy away from as a starter or non daily/pro set-up.

Good luck.

Oh okay, I didn't know his background.

I'd check out Craftsman set. For around same price range, you get better set.

$99+ tool set for 13 years old? Maybe little overkill?

Hell no......My parents gave me a Craftsman set when I was 13 ($300)...Of course they did kind of turn me into the toolwhore that I am today, 30 years later...:headscrat I still have 99% of the tools they gave me...Geez, I'm getting old...

I have the exact same set. Got them at walmart on christmas clearance last year for around $30. Really came in handy when i hax to change a starter in my truck in a relatives driveway. Have not used them much but no complaints. Also the black finish has held up fine. If i had a choice i would rather have chrome though. Makes it easier to see any tool left under hood or in low light.

I have some Stanley and use around the farm and they've held up about the same as our Craftsman stuff on the whole. Actually, I think the 3/8" ratchets are better than C'man and the black finish sockets are fine, a few of the shiny ones are peeling though.

For me, personally, I wouldn't want the black chrome stuff because I would add tools down the road and they would not match. I like my tools to match. Darn OCD.

Don't forget to ease on down to Lowe's and have a look. Those new Kobalt tools sure are shiny...

That is the same set as the Husky set I got for my riding box a couple of years ago. Its a good set but the black starts to wear off and the ratchets are starting to get really sloppy. But for 13yr old, it would be great. I would totally buy it for one of my kiddos! They also sell a set like that at Costco. They seem to be everywhere!

Forgive me if this is a silly suggestion, but Harbour Freight have a sale
on this 301 piece kit. It seems to all be quite useful stuff, and not too much
in the way of filler. With the exception of a couple of hammers I would think
this would cater for any 13 year old for some years. It's got SAE and metric
from 4mm to 32mm, and it comes supplied in cases.

It's on sale for $179 down from $250, I can't speak of the quality as I'm
3,500 miles away form the nearest Harbour Freight, but 28 people of the
29 that reviewed it gave it maximum score.
