Beyond the corporate stores there really isn't anything. Garage sales, estate sales, and flea markets are the only real places to get old stuff.

Have to look into trusty cook, not really interested in old, new usa if available. Just looking for some good places that have things in stock and on hand. At home in ohio we had a place called dayton tool crib, they catered towards automotive stuff and had tons of specialty and general service tools on the shelf.

For example the other day i went hunting for a 12mm hex key, wound up settling for a chinease hex socket set from autozone

Not sure what you're looking for, specifically. I can't think of any tool shops, specifically.

There are a couple of interesting suppliers locally that cater to racing.

http://www.earlsindy.com/home/
Their core business is "performance plumbing" -- everything from brake lines to turbo piping and hardware for race cars. They do have some tools and supplies that are hard to find elsewhere, and their prices are very good.

I do a lot of work on vintage motorcycles, so they've come in handy many times. And they have great prices on genuine Ty-Rap cable ties. Generic zip-ties **** once you've used these.

Racer Parts Wholesale is downtown -- they don't really have a showroom you can browse, but you can order from the web site and pick up your goodies at the warehouse. Again, not specifically tools, but lots of materials and stuff that's hard to find elsewhere.

For electrical tools and materials, MAI Prime Parts on Michigan Road is amazing:

Again, none of the above are specifically tool stores, and they're not really "browsable"; if you're trying to get something specific done, they're great resources, but if you're just looking for some good deals in general, there's no reason to visit.
