I've been around for a few months now and have figured out we have several 'types' of folks here... some are people that actually make a living with and use their tools everyday... some are avid tool collectors and look for those rare 1919 type J reversable left handed snap-on extensions. Then there are those that are addicted to tools and post "Hey I just bought a 14" rubberized do-hickey what can I do with it ?" and finally there are folks like me that like shiny things and want to have the tools at hand when needed. We will buy a tool for one job and probably never planning to use it again but we 'own' it.

I wonder how many we have of each ???

I am equal in two fields, though I chose general collector/user.

I am building a car, and regularly use all of my tools on that, as well as use tools all day long to make a living (non car related).

I am also a serious collector of antique tools.

I had to go with the first one even though I don't use my tools to make a living (at least not directly) as I can't put myself in the "general collector/user" category because there is nothing about "collecting" the tools - they don't sit on a shelf like a bunch of pottery or something. I don't buy a tool unless I'm using it.

I wasn't sure where to put my vote, so I chose user/collector, but I don't actually collect tools except to use. I used them professionally in the 1980's but just use them when necessary now to repair my own vehicles.

General user. Not much of collector yet. Despite being 35 I am just starting out in the purchase and use of tools. I have much to learn.

I'm a full-time tech, and soon will be training as a diesel tech. i use my tools all day, every day (well, 6 days a week.) to earn my living. i hunt for specialist and hard to find tools, but they all get used at work. even my 62-year-old Snap-on F-70N gets used every day.

I picked general user/collector. I am a user but don't collect tools for collecting sake. DIY and general tinkering are my hobby and pasttime. I used to weld for a living and aquired a lot of my tools from that time frame. I've never borrowed a tool always bought them even if it means useing it only once.

I was formerly an auto tech and acquired a lot of tools to put food on the table.

These days, I still use lots of tools at work, but they are of the cable pulling/splicing/testing variety. I also use "computer" tools a lot. I have a Jensen set provided by employer and others of my own, miniature screwdrivers, tweezers, etc.

At home, I do everything myself because I cannot afford to pay someone else. Lots of construction/destruction tools.

I would question the validity of this poll if I don't see at least one vote for option #4.:lol_hitti

Since I retired from wrenchin for a living for 35 years. I still use mine for my daily drivers and resto projects.

I guess that makes me a general user/collector?

I put myself in the general user/collector category but dont consider myself a collector.

I think there needs to be another category general user/weekend warrior/budget concious group. I just want to buy the right tool once ( i.e. quality in fit and finish, strength and value (including resale value) and then be able to enjoy using it for many years going forward.

I do use my tools to make a living but it is not as abusive as being an Auto Tech. The majority of the tools I use are on brand new vehicles. I do work on older vehicles from time to time, and do my own maintenance on my vehicles.

Im a sales rep for the largest independant hardware wholesale distributor in the world, we sell over 75,000 products to hardware stores, lumber yards, building centers and farm supplies in every state and 60 countries. I love selling hand tools and power tools, but hate writing credits for stuff you guys break

I make my living selling tools to people that sell them to you. Im very involved with keeping up with whats what in tool industry, mainly tools sold at the retail end, not real high end stuff like $5000 plasma cutters etc.. jsut your run of mill hand tools, Stanely, Irwin, Cooper, Estwing type stuff, and in power tools I sell all the major brands you find at Home Depot or any hardware store. DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, Skil, etc...

Shot me a pm if you want to know what real wholesale cost is for a tool before you buy one. There is very little mark up for the most part though these days in power tools thanks to everyone selling them on the WWW.

Sounds like you might be able to find out what's going on inside the industry... which leads to this: Any idea what Stanley's plans are for Facom? I'm almost afraid to ask.....

General user/collector. As much as I'd like to say I use all my tools, there are some that I have purchased just because I wanted them, they were discounted, or were too shiny/cool looking to pass up.

Although I use tools everyday to make a non-wrenching-related living, I too chose "general collector/user of tools" since that best describes my situation with respect to mechanics tools...

Of course, I just plain like tools in general (and have many) but my "collecting" area of interest lies primarily in vintage ratchets (for reasons I don't fully understand). I rarely use a ratchet, but just love them and the histories of the companies that produced them!

dumbandhappy,

I didn't know there was a Stanley-Facom deal. Is this a post Facom-SK deal?
Are we talking merger/acquistion deal, joint marketing deal, or some other kind of deal? I'm interested (personal curiosity) in anything you'd care to share about a Stanley-Facom deal.

LG,

Thanks for the clarification on Stanley-FACOM. I was unaware of the acquisition. Is there any news on how this is playing out in the market. Is FACOM just another brand or division at Stanley Works? Does Stanley actively market the FACOM tool line in the U.S., and Europe, and elsewhere?
