So I'm a heavy equipment tech at a major dealership. We do not have assigned bays and also, sometimes end up working at a smaller second shop about 150 yds away from the main shop. The floor in the shops and the concrete in the yard have a bunch of gouges in them from tracked machines and bucket teeth, so normal castors work but don't work well, it can be a rough ride when moving the toolbox.

I'm outgrowing my current box (a small Snap On) and need to get some larger tool storage anyway, not to mention I need to get a tool cart/work cart also.

I'd love to get a huge Epiq but just not gonna happen. The Tool Utility Vehicle style ones also catch my eye as being practical for what I do, too. I'm also wondering what other brands offer a similar box and also I've been thinking about fabricating up a well supported frame with some large pnuematic tires and a roll cage around the box and setting a normal style box in that frame, kind of like taking the road box roll cage concept to a larger size. The nice thing about building my own is I could also incorporate forklift stake pockets so I could move my box easily longer distances than bay to bay.

Any insight into this? Anybody done something similar? Anybody own a TUV or similar, what are your thoughts on these boxes?

the SO TUV would be fine for what you're doing,
until you see the price tag :eyecrazy:

i'd fab up a HD frame with tires and forklift pockets put together a couple of roll cabs/top/side combos.

grab a cheap (less expensive) cart, and do the same thing to it.

attached pic is a SO roller that served as a small pit cart when i was racing.

the frame was a cheap 2 wheel hand truck...

it worked, but was a little top heavy

Look into the maintenance rollers Like Kennedy sells; large center wheels for easy rolling and caters on the ends to steady it. MADE for the job of moving from one job on site to another.

That's the reason I was asking about similar products and rolling your own.

I'll be damned if I'm going to pay more for a TUV than I ever have or will pay for a truck or car.

try searching for Pit Boxes,
altho most of them have a pretty high price tag, you may get some ideas for fabbing one up for yourself.

thats gotta **** having to move a large amount of tools from one building to another.

last large shop i worked at i had most of the tools i needed on a simple 2 shelf cart, and could wheel it anywhere in the shop i had to go.
typically all i needed from my main box, was a torque wrench (or 2) and larger sockets that i didnt use every day.

main boxes in the rebuild room where i spent most of my time,
pic of the cart i used,
now sitting unused in my garage
