Tool Vault 72" detents opinions

I am trying to decide on a new 72"x24" bottom cabinet and have narrowed it down to the Tool Vault and the Gatorbuilt. The only thing I am apprehensive about is the drawer locking style. I would prefer the locking style of the Gatorbuilt vs the detents of the Tool Vault but the rest of the Tool Vault box seems to be a better fit for what I need.

How do the people who own this box like the detents? I have read posts of them not staying shut to a real struggle to open. It's a home box but it's used almost every day.

Thanks

I have a 72" x 30" Tool Vault Elite.

It came with an extra set of drawer slide detents that were supposedly "harder", which would therefore yield an easier pull.

After replacing them, I can't say that I noticed much difference in the pull, but after using the box a bit, the drawer pull softened up significantly - I think it's partly due to wear, and partly weight in the drawer - while all of mine have softened up, it's my heavier loaded drawers that have the easiest pulls.

I would assume that if people are having an issue with the drawers not staying shut, that they're not actually latching the drawer fully.

Overall, I don't have any issues with the box, once it got broken-in a bit.

I own two 72" tool vaults. I changed my heaviest loaded drawers to the harder detents to keep them closed. Works much better now. It is a wonderful toolbox for the money. Much better than the cheaper boxes and, in my opinion, as good as the top tier. I will never waste money on a snap on/mac/matco, ect, box again. Just my .02

The Tool Vault looks like a decent box. I would get one if I was starting out as a Tech or for home use and see how it holds up. The only thing I don't like is 2" Drawers that's where the truck brands are nice you can customize the layout and color. I have worked as a Class 8 truck tech for over 25 years and have seen a lot of Techs boxes come and go most cheaper boxes do not hold up with heavy use but I have noticed the mid priced box quality has been improved and they have more options they seem to be upping the game. I had a Mac Maximizer for 20 years in a rough environment It had heavy tools, a lot of drawer usage an moving around the box held up well I traded it in for a Snap on KRL 1022 (that is now at home since I train Techs now).

I own a tool vault. I can give you my opinion. same box i believe as montezuma, well sort of. I like the 2" drawers but the problem is almost all of them are 2", there are a lotof tools that could use bigger...the side black part of the drawers come out constantly. the detents that come w/ the box don't hold worth ****. I like the side locker, lots of shelves to put boxes. I like the top box. They are good at service (or were at least.)

it's a step up from harbor freight box, much better than the milwaukee box at HD, a definite step above craftsman (i'd get harbor before crapsman). a small step up from husky. I have a small matco box - i'd say its slightly below that or on par.

if i were to do over. i'd get it again, or go w/ harbor. that said, my dad has an old snapon he bought used - it's a step up from TV.

I own the 72" elite tool vault box and have been very happy with it. I've had the box for 2 years now and use it everyday at work (I'm an equipment mechanic). I've had no issues with the drawer detents being loose and not holding a drawer closed. I can say like someone else already has that the heavier loaded drawers open easier than the less loaded drawers but I'd rather them be on the stiffer side than opening up.

What about the 72 inch box from Menards? It's close to the same size, but a hell of a lot cheaper. Can be bought for $1000.

The Gatorbuilt is almost all 2" drawers, the 72" Tool Vault has mostly deeper drawers.

I have a John Deere 72" box. It's made by the same maker as the Tool Vault, Extreme Tools, Montezuma, and Masterforce boxes. While some of the smaller boxes aren't built quite as heavy duty I believe the 72" boxes, no matter the brand are fairly similar. I use my box almost daily and have had it for 2 years. I've had zero problems with it. Most the drawers, especially the top drawer full of sockets, are loaded down. No problems with the slides or the latches. It's a big step up from the stainless 41" Craftsman I used to have. I actually liked the 72" so much I ended up also buying a 56" last month. It was cheaper than buying a side locker and side cab. It's made slightly different than the 72" but I'm not worried about it. I think it's going to hold up fine.

I can't speak to the Masterforce, but the Tool Vault and John Deere boxes are built by Montezuma.

The Extreme boxes are not. I believe they share a manufacturer with Gatorbuilt, and come with heavier drawer slides, and are built with a heavier grade of sheet metal.

The 72" John Deere box only comes in a 24" deep, whereas the Tool Vault/Montezuma come in both 24" and 30" deep.

I don't know about Gatorbuilt. But Montezuma, Masterforce, Extreme, Tool Vault and John Deere are all actually manufactured through QCI. They make boxes for a lot of companies in different variations.

Productions for Deere has changed over the last few years. The original catalog showed the Deere boxes at 30" deep as well. Now they are 24". The latch handles for the drawers have also changed. The are now at least for the smaller boxes the same as the Masterforce boxes currently are.

Let us know what you think, I'm planning on ordering the 56x30 at the end of the month when it becomes available again.

I have a Montezuma 72 X 30. The detects are a non issue. You can drive her home and totally engage the detention or jump nudge and it will be partially engaged. I got extra detects. I would vouch that strictlytoolboxes.com will take care of you if any issues arise. Shannon was super helpful with getting me the box. I don't know if you still can configure the drawers the way you want but I changed to mostly shallow drawers and have about 22 drawers and that works out great for me.
