All,
I've just about completed the requirements development phase for a "Collection Inventory Management" portion of the site. This will take some time to get everything developed and up and running. However, before I begin the next phase, I'd like to gauge just how much interest there is in such a capability. I do plan on charging for it's use to cover the cost of developing the functionality, so I'd appreciate any comments on that as well. I'm not looking to make my millions here but it does take quite a bit of effort. I was thinking $3/mo or $30/year depending on how the user decides to pay. Love to hear comments on that.
I plan on starting with perceived "most popular" sets, and working on from there. Off the top of my head, I'd start with things like Pebble wrench sets, Nuggets and Nuggies sets, early Craftsman sets, etc. So, I'd love to hear thoughts on priorities for implementation as well.
You can't see it yet, but I've already begun with some pieces of the functionality and it works excellent on smart phones! You could have it open while at the flea or a sale to see exactly what you're missing (I've done it).
An overview of the functionality (comments, questions and suggestions welcome!):
- Provide a mechanism for users to look up the CATALOG documented contents of a wrench, socket, or kit set, and tool display content. The results would show what the contents should be, distinguishable markings and styles (with pics), and year(s) of production. The user can search for sets by Maker/Brand and year.
- Once you find the set your looking for, provide a mechanism for users to "collect this set" and add it to their "collection." Adding a set to your collection would enable you to track your progress as you collect the individual pieces.
- Provide a "Collection Dashboard" that lists all sets in your collection, and an overall status of completion. Users can click a set to see the detailed pieces and status. Dashboard should be able to be sorted by maker/brand.
- Allow users to flag set contents as "procured."
- Allow users to flag set contents as "procured but seeking a better example."
- Allow users to flag set contents as "extra" (meaning I have an extra item available)
- Allow users to indicate whether their set contents are "public" or "private."
- (this may be a later implementation) - Flag missing items as "available on e-bay" by automatically searching for missing set contents.
- Provide an all-content dashboard allowing users to see who-needs-what to fill their sets (if set contents are marked "public" by the owner).
- The all-content dashboard will also identify "rare" and hard to find items by noting how many collectors are missing the items.
- Provide a "trading area" that allows users to discover who is missing what, who has an extra of what they need, etc. (only items marked "public") The trading area will facilitate contact between members to work out trades. This area will also facilitate "anonymous" contact between individuals when contents and needs are marked "private."
