hey, guys. I've got an old tool box(maybe late 30s or 40s).
Its to ruff to "restore" but i want to make it look nice/decent.
i'll clean it up soon now that the weather is getting nice.
it aint beat up, but it may have a few small dings. I already straightened out the few bent edges.
I was thinking of painting it gloss black or red, but I just thought about doing it in rustolium hammered paint.
I think this might look decent.
i'm not talking about a small carry box its a bottom box.
any thoughts?
if you guys have done this before i'd love to see pix and help me go forward or change my mind.
thanks guys.

I'm a fan of the hammer finish, my wall cabinet at work is bigger than a 27" bottom box, and I did the doors in black hammer tone and love it.

I haven't done it yet, but I have a Montgomery Wards bottom roller that I plan on doing in hammered red w/ black metallic drawers. It may be some time though. I have a lot of other things on my to-do list first. :dunno:

I'm curious as to what 30's-40's bottom box you have. :D

You might want to rethink gloss black, in my experience that tends to show every surface imperfection beneath.

If its a Craftsman that old, see if you can get a dark blue hammer tone or the wrinkle finish...!

And Beat... (whispers) pics...

Beat, someone posted a box with those same chrome/ss strips on it the past week or so in the Vint. box thread.

does it have any drawers? What are the slides like if so?

what?! how did i miss that? its one of my subscribed threads:thumbup:

i was convinced this box was a blackhawk for the longest time, but recently CRTDI showed me a pic of a BONNEY bottom box that looks real close to mine, so i still aint sure.

no drawers inside. just a shelf.

Thanks for the info , I've started looking on eBay, seen a couple ,shipping to England is a killer , for some reason the shipping can vary wildly for the same box

so after only a year of searching i've decided i'll never find the proper top box for this cabinet. so i figured the next best thing would be to top it off w/ a chest that is of approx the same age.
been looking for another gerstner and got this one last fri.
its early 40s but it's a little ruffer than it looks. found another just like it from the mid 40s that is in terrific condition, i just gotta figure out how to swing it.
so, the black leatherette gerstner and the bottom painted black hammertone to match.
and i bought material to make a riser for more storage.
whatcha think?

I think it would look fine.

Might consider doing the bottom in a flat black. I'm very jealous of your bottom cabinet. That is way cool.

whatcha think?

Personally I wouldn't do the bottom in black, it would hide too much of the style built into the box, plus just make it too dark on the inside. I'd probably go with red, possibly a lite blue ish green? maybe a light grey, O hammer grey, even copper? Something besides black and not a new fad color. But that is just my opinion, YMMV.

I'm fond of two tone on boxes, so the charcoal hammers on the "frame" of the bottom to sort of match the leatherette of the G. and a contrasting lighter color for the doors and interior?

old thread, i know, but i think i have a worthwhile question.
the few times i've used rustoleum hammertone paint i've just sprayed or brushed it on.
its just an oil based paint that sort of "fish eyes" for lack of better term.

i read or heard somewhere that using a different base color under the hammertone will give better or more dramatic results.
like using a black(or any color) hammertone w/ a silver or gold base color beneath will make a different color than just the hammer paint alone.

has anyone played or experiment w/ this?

yes, i know "fish eye" is a term used for paint that gets contaminated w/ oil or silicone.
