Toolbox/bench project

I acquired a toolbox for free from work, and it was full of rust from sitting outside and being unused. I decided that I want to refurbish this box, and remove the casters to use it as part of a work bench. I am currently in the process, and thought I would share some pics of the process. I am removign the rust with my grinder and flap wheel, then will apply truck bed liner to the exterior of the box, leaving the interior blue as pictured. I LOVE this rustoleum truck bed liner. It has the perfect texture, and I have found myself using it for darn near everything these days!!! The final plan is to top it with a door (which I acquired today) and some sheet metal. The door that I got was damaged (as pictured), so I talked the guy at Lowes into selling it to me for $25. IT feels very solid, and weighs in at 105 LBS. Its hard to believe it is not solid wood, but the guy insisted that it wasn't solid all the way through. It measures 36"x80"x1.75". I think it will make an awesome bench top!

Solid ? I don't know but I do see some spline in the edge and it's a veneer front on the door.

What's sound like when you knock all over the door ? Does the pitch change or stay the same ?

It may be solid in the sense that there's no air space, but often everything inside about 4-6" from the edges is a kind of low density chipboard. The stuff is strong enough you can't put your fist through the veneer, but not nearly as strong as solid wood. The edges are solid so they will hold the hinges and latch.
No easy way to tell without drilling a hole! Even the knock test can fool you. The clerk was probably right.

Most solid doors are 1 3/4" thick any weigh 50+lbs. Hollow core are usually 1 3/8 and maybe 10lbs. You will know the difference by weight alone.

Weighed the door, and it comes in at 105 LBS.

I am currently trying to figure out how to tie that bench, the workbench top (door), and the toolbox together. The door is too deep for either of them, and I really didnt want to cut it down to fit. Also, the transition between the two will be problematic. I need ideas badly. Ill probably start a thread searching for ideas with pics.

Well, I was able to render some blueprints that show what my goal for this bench is. The bench on the left, with the two levels and MDF is one that I already have. I am going to incorporate the door and box on the other side to make one bog, bi-level bench. I am open to suggestions so let me know what you guys think. Questions/comments would be awesome!

Looks good, I like the bed liner idea. I was gonna say to knock on door and then knock on wife or girlfriends head to check if hollow or solid.

I would make the taller bench 'stand alone' and then fasten them together... That way if you ever do want to separate them it will be easy.

would be cool if the height difference of the two benches was the height of your mitre saw table.. (but that would be HUGE coincidence)

Well, I spent part of yesterday destroying my garage, and today rebuilding it with the brand new bench and box that I have shown here in this thread. I'll be starting another in the garage forum, but here are the pics for those who are interested in how it all came together!
