Hello. Looking for a coating for the bottom (outside) of an old Craftsman Cantilever box (circa 1985). Something where I can scrape any heavier buildup and flaking paint off and brush it on. The red color would be nice, but it doesnt have to be. I'm not looking for a perfect finish just some protection. I dont have access to any sanders sandblasting any of that. Suggestions needed thanks.

I refurbish things so have a decent amount of oil base paint in various colors around. For things of that nature that are normally not seen I use the colors that I am not fond of. Hit it with a handheld wire brush and sandpaper and brush or spray some on. I would let a tool box bottom dry thoroughly in the sun for a few days, then inside for a day before using. If not fully cured it can stick to a surface it sits on once some weight is in it.

If its already rusty you could use a direct to rust type paint like Hammerite just need to chip any flaking pieces off and brush off any dust then paint straight on.

Brush off anything loose and hit it with a rust converter. Any product with phosphoric acid will work. Then Rustoleum or bed liner.
