Toolbox Covers

Anyone have them and anyone use them?

Seems like they'd kind of be a pain in the you know what.

id like to have one for when I'm spraying paint and primer in the garage, and when I'm in a position where a lot of sparks may hit it... $5000 is a lot of money for overspray to fall on... right now I just use the plastic bag it was shipped in when I'm spraying, and i move it if a lot of sparks will hit it.

I have one on my Matco box. It really couldn't be less trouble. The front panel that covers the drawers zips off, leaving the rest of the box covered.

They're awfully nice for certain shops.

At my past job, all of the employee boxes were in the main shop, which also happened to be where all fiberglass and gelcoat repairs were done. DA's throw a lot of dust and it loves to settle in the nooks and crannies of drawer lips and other places that can be an absolute ***** to clean. Even with monthly waxing, gelcoat does not clean off very easily, especially if it sits for a while.

No, covers, properly designed covers at least (a zip on each side) are not a pain in the ***. Not on my roll cab with no top box at least. If you had a top box that had the flip open lid and not just a drawer section, then yeah I can see that being a PITA.

If I had a super nice SO or Mac or even Matco box, I would spend the extra money and get a cover. Even in my garage when Im cutting wood on the table saw...I cover my lathe and boxes with old sheets. It helps keep the fine dust off them and out of the drawers. But Im not a pro. So my need is a little different.

I have one. Its a Snap-On cover I bought off of E-Bay for $20. It fits my Clarke HD box with side locker perfectly. I does a great job of keeping the dust off the box...

I have one that fits my entire box but I rarely put it on. Mainly when I am going out of town for a while and I want to try and keep the wife and kids out of the box. It takes a few minutes to put it on....

I'm the only guy in my shop that uses a cover. My box cost me $5500 and I can't stand to see it dirty. I work on garbage trucks and you could eat off my box. SO guy says I have the cleanest box in his area. Cover was cheap insurance to protect my investment.

Yes it is but I left a key with the wife. I told her if the house catches on fire, yell at the kids to get out, throw the dog thru the window and then grab the ratchet drawer from my box......

I have had one on every truck box that I have ever had. Its cheap insurance to keep your box clean in dirty environments.

I bought a Snap On cover from a member here.
I'm glad I keep it on my box. After priming a resto box this weeked, I looked at all the primer that was on the cover and thought "thank God I had this covered"

I might also add that I noticed there is a Garage Journal advertiser call "Comsew" that makes custom covers in any size and configuration, and looking at their site, they appear to be about half the price of Snap-On on a cover for my Classic 96. I will probably be using them when I get around to getting one for that box.

The guys I've seen who use covers usually take pride in ownership and there tools and box are nice. I usually won't buy a box that I know has been in a bodyshop cause the dust kills the slides and the paint always seems gritty. A cover would help that tremendously. I doubt I would ever use a cover but I also doubt I'd ever have an expensive box. The nice ones I resell. I just waiting to get a KR1000 that works nice but the paint is beat. That would be my up grade from my 1980 Vulcan upright, that really isn't is bad shape but sure needs a cleaning and waxing.

I love my cover. I use the kobalt 6 drawer, with the 5 drawer top.
So far it's been a great "value box" however, the cover is of far better value than quality. At least once a weak I come in to find a new rip.
I'm doing what I can 'till I can afford a decent cover, or have the time to make one (I'm using sealant and sewing). Needless to say, It gets pretty dirty during the 2nd shift. It takes a few extra seconds out of my day, but it's time I'm happy to spend.
