Been trying to get better at tool organization, as I am the poster child for spending 2 minutes using it/ 20 minutes looking for it. Been looking at foam inserts for my tool box, to better organize my sockets, spanners, and various other tools. So if you have some share what you have and whether you like them or not? Also wondering if its better to get the pre cut versions vs. cutting my own to meet my needs?

I went with Kaizen foam for my mobile tool kit. I spent way too much time laying tools out trying to optimize but that was part of the fun. If you're just looking to "get her done", you could trace and cut pretty quickly.

I have a hard time imagining non-custom foam unless you're buying all new tools or are willing to tailor you drawer organization around someone else's ideal layout.

The other option is something like "Trace my Space" where you send them your desired layout and they cut and send the foam back to you. Probably expensive, but might be worth it.

Foam is nice for holding stuff in place for mobile kits or quickly identifying missing tools in aviation or other FOD field.

Its not great for space efficiency and it's really not great if your collection changes much.

Do you have any photos of your current setup so that we can see the space you are working with?

I'm messing around with a 3D printer and gridfinity - here's my progress so far.

Learning as I go and trying to not get too complex with it all.20241020_074815 - Copy.jpg

My first attempt at toolbox foam, definitely looks better with the tools inside. Hides all defects from my unsteady hand.

Looks good! I realize.. this is an older post. But it’s new to me.

This is my first attempt. I should have gone slower with my cutting. I have another 1” layer I could use, but think it’ll be too thick. Also.. I didn’t buy layered foam. This is 1” thick low density polyethylene foam. IMG_0962.jpeg

I tried foam and did not like it. I feel like it wasted a lot of space. I have angle aluminum to divide my drawers into various areas. You can use stick-on magnet tape or rivet it to the bottom of the drawer, depending on your level of commitment I also like the small plastic boxes for dividing up areas.

For most of my drawers.. I have compartments or boxes of stuff (drill bits for example).

Since I didn’t have a great way to hold these torque wrenches.. I think this Durham box makes sense for me to use foam. Under these tools.. the foam doesn’t look awesome, but oh well. I’ve already been tempted to add stuff to it, digital calipers.. but the fit wasn’t good and.. well it doesn’t fit the same theme of torque wrenches.. so it will stay in its case in another drawer.
