Toolbox haul - what can I sell them for?

I saw this lot on CL. It was in the antique section and there weren't any real searchable words or anything, so when I saw it was $125 for everything and it had been sitting on CL for 12 days, I was pretty surprised.

I really don't need any of them, I just figured I'd flip them to make some cash for stuff I actually need. Want. Same difference

First up is a craftsman 9 drawer top box with a 3 drawer middle box bolted to it. No keys, but pretty decent shape. Had an interesting variety of small tools, some USA in there. Some USA feeler gauge sets, a couple small USA combo wrenches, and a bunch of other random small junk.

Next is what I assume is a craftsman 9 drawer top, but the badge on it says "Captain's Quarters". Your guess is as good as mine. Besides the padlock instead of a normal keyed lock, it really looks identical.

Then we have a Snap-On KRA-53C. Has the key, but it's in the worst shape of the 4 (of course, right?). Small dent on the edge of the flip-top, but other than that it's just a little dirty. Nothing crazy.

And lastly, a neat find inside the Captain's Quarters box, I found this:

Just the empty box, but I thought it was cool.

So what do you think I should be pricing these at?

The snap on box will go for $100 to $150 alone
The cman boxes I'm thinking $100 to $125 for the pair

If they have been on CL for 12 days at that price, you will probably have trouble making any money. Just my opinion, maybe if Zeke were close you could make a quick come up...

They were in the wrong section and really weren't even searchable. I just happened upon them looking for something else in the antiques.

Based off what I've seen in our tools section, and boxes I've sold around here, the lot should go for at least 300. Just seeing if anyone knows anything about them that I don't that would affect the price.

Stuff is expensive in these parts. Never any good deals, and always terrible selection. I usually have to find stuff this way - things that fell through the cracks and got posted wrong.

The SO is the only find. The craftsmans are the cheapest cheapies. The top box sold new for $80 10 years ago. $100 for SO, and maybe $30 for the rest.

The first box is one of the "shop series" boxes, you can see the slots for the locking bars in the top and bottom sills. very light and tinny, don't bother. Ken.

Never know till you try, I agree with Nine and Bob. Me thinks in the end the time, effort and frustration involved will outweighed what little profit margin you may obtain. Working a few hours at a random hourly job would probably get you further to purchase the things you really need. But again, never know till you try.

What do you want to know about them?

As Bob said, those craftsman boxes are the lowest of the low. They won't fully lock without the lock bars in front of the drawers.

The snap on box is a random size box. Pretty small for someone to use as a top box being ~24" wide. It's not that much smaller than a standard 26" top box yet has quite a bit less storage space. The dividers can be a real pain, that edition is not all that well built, not well enough for a road box IMHO. About the only thing going for it is the SO name and the key.

Less than that if it's non ball bearing. No one wants that s(hit)tuff.

Demon skull stickers will net him an extra 10 cents though the dymo drawer stickers will cost him the 10 cents he made off of the demon skull stickers. Owner must've been super tough. Probably a lumberjack.

You guys are pretty accurate on the top Craftsman. I paid $77 new about 12 years ago. It is not ball bearing. OK box but the Harbor Freight ones are much better.

Not trying to be rude either, but not a lot of flipping potential in them. Mostly because the Craftsman is a cheapo, and there's lots of cman boxes going around on craigslist here.

I don't know how anybody sells a craftsman box on CL, they always want at least double if not triple of what the thing was new.

Around here, the Craftsman combos seemed priced at what I paid retail for a combo a few years ago.

There's pretty regular churn, too - the earlier-posted boxes drop off, newly-posted boxes show up, and the cycle repeats.

I can only assume that someone's paying ridiculous amounts for them, since they don't stay long. :headscrat

Wow, a lot of Debbie Downers on here.

You ain't gonna hit a home run, but the Crafty's might bring $100, the Captain another $35 and the Snappy $150. Make sure you do a quick wipe down on all of them, take some good pics and post them on CL.

I like your entrepreneurial spirit. even if you don't make much money, you stepped up to the plate and took a few swings. I started with $2k 5 years ago and last year sold about $100k in tools and boxes. Now I sell out of my pressure washer store so that is a huge advantage but no reason you can't buy and sell some stuff to make some extra coin. Be careful though,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,its addictive:willy_nil

If it were me, I'd get $80 for the top and middle combo, $40 for the unnamed box and the Snap On makes you money. You're definitely not losing money so nice job.

I sold the identical craftsman for $60, as others have said its pretty low end. I inherited it and didn't have the space. Actually I combined it with a friction-slide bottom in rough shape for $120.

Wow, a lot of Debbie Downers on here.

No joke, but it comes with the territory  Thankfully the CL crowd here isn't full of GJ'ers! Prices are way more inflated than I see you guys paying for stuff. Nobody haggles anymore either...

Given the selection and prices in the area (10 or so boxes in the price range, almost all beat to hell or no-names that look like kids toys), I'm definitely not worrying about turning a decent profit. I'll give them a good cleaning, and see what happens. Right now I'm planning on listing the Snap-On for $150, Craftsman set for $125, other Craftsman(?) for $100. I'm not in any hurry, I'm plenty negotiable, and frankly that's pretty competitive in our CL.

I have all the lock bars for them, and they all just need a good cleaning.

I really don't need anymore top boxes... I've got a '76 Proto 10-drawer top box and a Mac 3-drawer. I also don't need another job, I'm active duty military :p No problem affording my tools, but I've flipped a ton of musical instrument related stuff, no reason to not start doing it with tools.

Still trying to figure out the story behind the Captain's Quarters badge :headscrat

Oh there's wiggle room lol. Asking $375 total, I'd be plenty happy with $250 or even $200. Given my experience with this area, I wouldn't be surprised at all to make $300 :dunno:

It's a great place to sell, but ***** when you want to buy used.

I see best case scenario is $250. And that means getting at least $125 for the Snap On box. The Craftsman boxes are low end and likely won't fetch much. May be able to get $75 for the top and middle box, and $50 for the top box.

Do what fatfillup said and offer them separately.

Oh this thread ain't dead till we say its dead:eyecrazy:

And its only dead when you make the sale and report back:)

Well, the 2 Craftsman boxes are gone. I sold the 12-drawer for $100. After he said he was on his way, I made a trade deal with another guy for the 9-drawer figuring I'd like to get them gone soon, and he had some stuff I actually wanted.

So 30 minutes later waiting for both of them, and the cash guy shows up. He pays for the 12-drawer then offers the $100 I was asking for the 9-drawer, so offering $200 for both Cmans. I wish he'd said he was interested in them both when we were talking, because I would've much rather taken the cash, but I couldn't sell it with the trade guy already almost here. I hate when people do that to me, and it's happened a good bit.

That said, so far I've made $100 and gotten a 6pc Stanley woodworking chisel set and a 19pc Baltimore/Mayhew punch and chisel set. I've been looking for a long time for some good punches and chisels, and I haven't really seen any pop up on CL, so I'm pretty happy with that trade.

Still have the Snap-On box for sale, no bites yet.

Pics of course...
