Toolbox preference

Ok guys I'm in need of your wisdom. I'm looking at buying either the US General 44 inch bottom box, or coughing up a little more money and getting the 56 inch. Is there any reason that the 44 inch would be better? I have the space for either one, and the larger means more tools. But those that have used both, is there anything about the 44 inch that you liked but the 56 inch lacked? Or vice versa. Most YouTube videos seemed to just end up being a toolbox tour instead of review so I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

The only two plus sides to the 44 are price and size. Now you already said you have thr room and if that little extra $ is no big deal get the bigger one in my opinion.

I guess weight would play into it if you planned on moving it often also.

Neither anyone I know, nor myself have ever said "gee, I wish I would have bought a smaller tool box".

I agree with Bluedodge.

Just looking myself at sears and at HF mid range tool boxes. I thought Sears Craftsman was about the same quality in the corresponding size but the HF was less expensive. Right now Sears is discounting stuff with coupons and generous credit card points.

for me, (i'm sorta old school when it comes to toolboxes, the last boxes i bought that are in my garage now were purchased in '94) most of the toolbox options today just dont have the "right" drawer size/amount for my needs.

way too many deep drawers, not enough shallow for MY needs.

everyone has a personal preference...

if i had the space available for either box, i think i'd probably go for the 44" with a locker, bulky, seldom used stuff can be stored in the locker, and not taking up space in a main box.

my biggest "issue" with boxes wider than 36" is they are hard to (physically) move, (as in, relocate from one place to another), and as my storage needs change it's easier to reconfigure the placement of things in the garage.

i dont own a toolbox any wider than 36"

thinner drawers on the 44" allow better layout of mechanic type tools.
I don't like the 56" drawer sizes as too many deep drawers, 72" is much better on drawer sizing combination.
44" with side cabinets if needed is my preference over HF 56" ...
If roll box a lot upgrading to proper quality bearing castors makes huge difference on how easy HF boxes roll .
Other advantage of HF44 with side cabinets is the easier transport as in sections so handy for people likely be moving location a lot .

I bought the 56" because of the extra depth and the latches on each drawer keeps my little rugrats out of my tools. Can't go wrong with either one in my opinion.

I'm looking at the 44" just because for the price I can get ones for both work and home, and also because the 44" fits in the spot I have at home.

I believe the 56" might be a heavier gauge construction and somewhat sturdier, but I haven't looked at that one much in the store.

I bought the 56" and don't regret it at all, its a great box and the drawer depths are fine, the only drawer thats too deep is the bottom right one but its small so you don't loose much because of it. The 56" also has better wheels imo and pretty sure its thicker gauge steel. You also can order smaller drawers and put them where the bigger drawers are.

I had the same issues with what to get and ended up with the Harbor Freight 44", side cabinet, locker and top box. The funny thing is I still kept my old 27" Waterloo manufactured Bonney branded roller and top box as it has space I still use and I have the room.

The thing I had also to consider is what the CFO (WIFE) would allow me to buy and what I could really use. My toolboxes will most likely not get moved much as I am a retiree that likes to be in the garage a lot.

I am still deep in getting my spaces correct for the usage that I want but the current arrangement is probably close to what will be the permanent arrangement.

There was also a couple issues that I Had with the 56" box was the first I really do not like plastic drawer locks and since the 44" uses detents that are acceptable. Also some folks like deeper drawers but I am kind of funny and do not care for the depth of the 56".

The steel appear to be the same in quality and I also think in thickness so I went with the 44". I am happy as I worked out of my 27" Bonney tool box for the 35 years but with the amount of tools I had outgrown what the Bonney could provide in trying to get organized and it would have been impossible. As that is said I also still need the Bonney for it is my overflow tool box now
