Toolbox shipping...

My grandfather passed away back in July. I was left his tool collection, he worked for Canadian National Railways on the heavy line then finally as an electrician.

My grandparents moved to Florida about 12 years ago and he took his chest with him (Gray tools box from the late 60s).. Now my grandmother and aunt are getting on my case about showing no interest in shipping the tools back to Canada. I suggested that we should split the cost of shipping via truck freight back in August if they found a company which they haven't even bothered contacting one.

So now the task is up to me to arrange something... Any ideas?

Post up the dimensions and weight along with origin and destination and people will submit bids. Could be a mom & pop hotshot company or a freight company, there are a lot of ways to get things shipped.

Am in the process of having a 900 pound crate shipped from WY to AK right now, not too difficult if you look in the right places.

You can also find the National Motor Freight Carrier's designation for tool boxes and use it to find rates on a variety of LTL (less than truck load) websites.


If you can ship commercial address to commercial address (preferably loading dock to loading dock) you can also save a heck of a lot of money. Various surcharges like lift gate, residential delivery, notification before delivery, pallet-jack, and inside delivery can really drive the bill up.

I can check into good carriers from FLa to Quebec and get back to you later next week.

dims and weight make a big difference. It's probably a small pallet's worth?

Also Canadian customs is among my least favorite to deal with.

make sure it is well insured, well packaged, and the condition is well documented. I saw what happened to a techs mac box in a cross country shipping incident. it wasn't pretty, and i don't think he got much if any reimbursement.

How big is the box? I'd lock it up or weld it shut and put it on a Grayhound bus for Canada. It's on the Snowbird route so it should be cheap and easy. Customs probably wouldn't even look at it....Rob

Give uShip a try. It's real easy to put up a shipment, and if you don't get any bids you like, than you're out nothing. I'm using it now to ship a car and it's been easy.

I ship boxes daily. The designation for insuring used boxes is different than new. You will need to find a broker like www.freightquote.com , http://www.uship.com UPS freight Fed Ex freight will price you around published rate. In addition without proper packaging there is no insurance.

Be very aware of re-weigh fees and reclassification in route. If you fill out the Bill of Lading incorrectly and the item gets reclassed and corrected in route they will make you pay the correction before giving you your item.

The problem is shipping into Canada. There are customs brokers fees, duties etc that need to be dealt with so very few companies have it set up so you can ship from their site to Canada without having an account first.

That seems high. I've sent back warranty returns that weighed more & the box was about the same size. I don't recall ever paying more than about $40.

Thanks Dave....That is what I thought.

$40 is in my right in my price range, $75 is not. The UPS site says that the bill weight is 83 lbs...likely because of the box size?

I need to do some more research.

First of all, all these folks talking truck freight have offered some great info, but this is NOT a truck freight item at 30 lbs. I think they assumed you were talking Roll Cab here. That UPS rate sounds about right. UPS rates vary by weight, box size and distance (zone based). I think you can get a better rate from them if you ship to a business as opposed to a residence. You could also try USPS Parcel Post or Fed-Ex Ground, but I'd bet they are in the same ballpark.

But forget truck freight.

Yes, I assumed it was a large box/roll cab.

An academic point: there shouldn't be a a difference in "class" between new and used. Class determines insurance to a point, but it's a separate issue.

Good advice on bill of lading, above. You've got to make sure you do it right, or the the truck company can find all kinds of ways to get around taking care of a problem.

Thanks guys. This "box" is really a chest that is 5ft tall by about 4ft wide and normal depth. Weighs atleast 900lbs full.

My local UPS store will crate and ship such an item. You might find one of these places and get a quote. I'd be you'd be looking at rates in the $400-500 range though.

A friend of mine is working in Ft MacMurray.He had his 41" bottom box shipped out there via truck freight.I beleive it ran him $800 to ship from Sydney,NS to Ft MacMurray Alta.

UPS was a nightmare for me. I had a nice second hand Snap-on box shipped from Ga to Pa that I bought on Ebay. When I got it, the box was bent on all four corners. It was packed by the UPS store. I told the woman at the store that my 4yo Grandaughter could have packed it better! I was pissed. I'm just glad I took full insurance out on it. I got the box price and the shipping money refunded.
