An have to admit ..i have tractor envy..Mines a 71, 966 But no where near as nice as yours....But she is still reliable..and getting the job done..

Yeah, they are good ole tractors. The one in the avatar is a Hydro 86

I think the reason we baby the Snap-on boxes is resale or trade in value.

I have always had workbenches to do larger stuff on. If I were the OP, probably would have used a 54" stacked KRL and a heavy duty rolling work table

ftb;6374822 Complain? Assumptions. I spent a bit of money with SO and several of their drivers and have had good experience when I need help. [/QUOTE said:
Hey bud these are your words, not mine.

My previously useful tool box has become almost unusable. I spent a lot of money on the armoured worktop and the hutch. Selling the two and putting money towards the top box is out of question. I will be thousands out of pocket (it's a 72" box).

I thought at some point of ringing SO head office and getting them involved in sorting it all out - I was p*ssed off with the situation so much.l:

I'd be willing to bet a majority of the professional wrenches here have all made major purchases they regret. I know I have. But it comes down to one simple fact, no one was twisting your arm.

I hear where you're coming from. My brother bought the hutch for his KRL.. and when it arrived, he instantly had buyers remorse.

His impression of what he was getting, was a little different than what he got.

He is a heavy line tech, specializing in axles and gear maintenance for a large fleet.

He ended up building a rolling bench, and affixed it down on top... for differential third members disassembly and reassembly.

So, I can really empathize with you here. For some the loss of bench access, works really well. For others, not so much.

You seem to be convinced I've made my own bed so have to **** it up and move on. We are not talking about coupla hundred dollars here, bud. When SO designed the hutch they had an idea how it will work for people. That's what I want(ed) from the head office. There should value for money but I don't get it with the hutch.

Most of us baby our boxes..But sometimes i think thats like not sleeping with your wife, so she can still be a virgin for her next Husband...F that...tear it up.....lol

It's a tool (box), not a worshiping altar.

What were your intentions when you bought the hutch? I know before I bought mine, I spent a lot of time on their website studying dimensions, looking on here for storage ideas, things of that nature. I'm 6'6 and have no issue with the height of mine (epiq), but I don't use it for heavy teardown. I'll rebuild a carb or transfer case motor, lock cylinders, things of that nature. I stopped using it for heavy teardown after the novelty wore off. I've seen some nice setups, some have shelving, some use the pegboard for storage, others have large monitors mounted for their scan tools or labscopes. Everyone has different uses, but I'd say 99% aren't rebuilding a diff inside their hutch.

Matt,

Thanks for the picture. My only gripe with the hutch is that it's too darn low. I have the light and it's nice but working on the top has become a nuisance. A bit like using a sand blasting cabinet where your hands are where your eyes can't see. To answer your question, I bought it for the light mostly. Just didn't realize it would be in the way of my work. They should have made it a foot taller.

I am still trying to wrap my head around how this could be the manufacturers fault. Sounds like you did not do enough research on the product. Regardless of what you invested in it and yes I understand the concept of a huge tool related investment, Snap-on has nothing to do with your decision. **** it up, make it work and move on man.

I use my rider and two bulk bins on top but I raised the entire roll cab and combination 6-8 higher off the floor. No head banging. Bench too much better level

Thinking of getting a bigger box to replace my old Snap on. Looking at the Tool Vault 84" roll cab from stricklytoolboxes. I can't decide if the hutch is really necessary though? Doesn't seem like it really serves too much of a purpose other than you can leave tools on top of the box and just lock the hutch. So, for security I guess it does provide a function, and maybe a little more storage if you utilize shelving and hooks. The tradeoff is spending more money, and makes the box harder to transport.

Should I go with the hutch or not? It won't be for home use, I will be using it at the shop where I work.

For a shop I’d definitely want a hutch so there is a place to leave chargers, laptop, and other things that may not go in a drawer secured. Having good lighting inside the hutch makes it easier to read RO’s or manuals if the shop lighting is dim. I wouldn’t bother for home use.

It can be very useful having a space that doesn't need to be organized to be secured but if you are tall like me I find them very annoying as I have to constantly hunch down a bit to work in them.

Snap on wants $4200 for a hutch for my triple bank box; That's bit much IMO. I never considered the overhead lighting angle though, that would be very nice for detailed work.

It is a nice place to store cans of chemicals, chargers, scantools during the day. It also depends on the size of the shop and number of employees. It makes for SUPERB goober-protection, no access to chargers, power strips, etc. Not sure about your shop, but I'd probably freak-out on someone if I saw them going through my stuff. Where I work now, it's understood you don't mess with my stuff. For my dollar, I need another full box. But I can see the advantages, although I'm generally anti-hutch. I have not seen one I could be upright in, at 6'2. You also give up work space, since you're less likely to fight with a crusty hub/snap-ring within the hutch IMO.

Its all personal Preference. If you want a dedicated work surface, the hutch intrudes that. if you want a place to store a computer, cordless tools, chargers and easy access commonly used tools, it is a very nice setup. you can also shut it at the end of a bad day and deal with the mess in the morning... lol.

I have one of each.. My main box has a hutch and my second box right beside it has a SS work surface that is used as a bench (not ********* engine disassembly or anything)

You are right, $4200 is a bit much. During the recent promotions, I was quoted around $2500 for an 84" Epiq hutch. I did not go for it as I wasn't sure I wanted one, but now I do so I will wait until a good deal comes around again since they change monthly. I was told maybe January...

A hutch no thanks I would want a additional top tool box. All the hutches I have seen over the years have become after a while a dedicated junk area. They just seem to be able to accumulate stuff that does not make inside the box they quickly become disorganized and I actually prefer a nice study work bench immediately beside the toolbox.

^yup, the empty box. The triple bank top box, is like $9200. Remember, as price goes up, so do discounts. I doubt hutches move regularly for less than 3k unless you have a good dealer. Top box I'd expect to move closer to 6k with promo stuff.

My KRL double bank hutch was 2K with the 30% discounts applied about 3-4 years ago off the Rock and roll truck. I also bought a locker and side cabinet all at once and all cost me 5K out the door.

the side cab is about 4K by itself, the locker is 2K+ and the hutch is 2500+. yes its a lot of money, but if you're working out of it day in and day out, its well worth it.

FWIW, the locker is more useful than the hutch imo.

Hi guys. Well its time for an upgrade. Currently have a Mac tech 1080 with a top for a nice workbench and a cabinet. But that is now rather full especially with specialist stuff in boxes. Looking to go for a hutch with the overhead lockers but the hutch hole seems a bit short to me. Can anyone shed some light on how these work centre / hutches are like to live with?
@Adam0502
I got accustom to TopBox w/my MacTool Edge SetUp at work
So when I UpGrade to SnapOn Classic I felt SomeThing missing w/TopBox
So I added TopBox on it as well
I never had HutchBox before
But I do like having drawer in addition to open space OnTop of my box
Hope this helps!

Did you wake up every hutch/top box discussion in the history of the forum to post the same reply? You could probably have picked just one.

Cmon the guy was just excited to share his toolbox!

@ogtrek77 - nice setup and welcome to GJ!

Do you have a preference between your Mac box and your SnapOn?

@Hakeem
I think I prefer the SnapOn (Bottom)
over the MacTool (Bottom)

The MacTool came w/Top
The SnapOn did not have Top

I like the MacTool Top (I think)
So I eventually added top(Husky) on my SnapOn

Ps
SnapOn truck came 1st
Matco truck came 2nd

MacTool truck came 3rd
(I found/met him MonJuly29
1stTrip to shop was MonAug5)

CornWell truck don’t come!
(No route is near shop sad 😢 )

Pps
Any thought on SnapOn PowerCart???
