Toolboxes and storage

I have one major issue right now and that's lack of tool storage.

I have two sets of tool boxes that I use. One set is my old Craftsman 26" top and bottom and I'm hoping to have someone here help me ID my old craftsman toolbox. I got it from my dad who had it for the longest time. Basically what I want to know is whether or not I can add an intermediate chest to it and whether or not I can add a side cabinet. I've attached a pic of it.

The second top/bottom set is the green Master Force 41" from Menards. Are there any add-on options for that?

Third and finally....I have boxes of random sockets, old screwdrivers, and various wrenches beyond what is my complete sets. What do you guys do with this stuff? I hate to get rid of tools.

Craftsman box looks 60's or more likey 70's era.

Will a current intermdieate box work? Yes, very likely.

Just check depth (likely 12") for top box and then make sure it fits the bottom box which is likely 15" or 18".

And yes, a side cab set up for a 18 x 26 roll cab will fit and hang on the lip. Finding one and the price may not be as happy tho.

As for the tools, keep and store what you need and sell off the rest.

There is no such thing as too many tools.

That Craftsman top and bottom look the be the exact same set I purchased new in 1983 or 84. That was when Craftsman boxes were sturdy. At the time, intermediate boxes were available. Don't know about today.
Sadly, I sold the bottom and the top got stolen.

I would say that Craftsman setup is from the '80s, like Dyna Bill said. I have a top box exactly like that one and it was made in 1987.

Yes, you can get a three drawer intermediate box that will fit that setup perfectly. A side cabinet will fit on just about any toolbox, as long as it has a lip.

As for extra sockets, screwdrivers, etc...there's no such thing as extra! Seriously, you can always use these to make a portable toolbox for the junkyard, around the house, etc. You need at least two good sets in your box, and it's very uselful to have more elsewhere.

They are mid to later 80's for sure.

As far as getting more storage, you could do several things...

Add intermediate from Sears, add side from Sears or you could add addons from HF like the side boxes they use (?)

Extra tools- I keep a few of the common sizes with the regular set. I also keep some in the house so I don't have to go outside to the garage when it's crappy outside. Don't hink I have ever sold a tool.

I'm going to go to Sears tomorrow to look for an intermediate chest for the Craftsman set. The top box is 12" deep and the bottom box is 15" so either 12"x26" or 15"x26 should be ok.

Just went through the extra stuff this evening and here's what I found

• 20 screwdrivers both phillips and flat blade of varying size and length
• 10 pair of slip joint pliers
• 1/4in drive sockets about 30 total from 5/32 to 3/4 inch in increments both 6 pt and 12 pt
• 3/8in drive sockets about 10 of them all random sizes
• 1/2 drive sockets about 10 of them all random sizes
• rusty tap and die set
• about 30 combination/box end wrenches
• ammo box full of old/dull/rusty drill bits.

I have at least two sets of these things already. I put the sockets on socket bars and I'll keep them. I have no use for the screw drivers. I'm going to figure out how to clean up the tap/die set. I have no idea about the wrenches. I'll toss the drill bits and keep the ammo box.

The Master Force has the side boxes available, I've seen them in every store I've looked at, they are in the same Isle as the tool chests.

Buy or borrow a drill doctor and resharpen those drills , if they are over 1/4 inch, Can't have too many drill bits !!

You can use the extra/no used anymore tools to compile a travel box/bag. This what I did and use it when I travel or go help somebody out with something.

this is probably the best option for xtra tools.

most of my working tools are in my service truck, i have a few extras/spares in my boxes at work, tools in the tolbag on my harley, small bag with common use tools in my off road truck, common used tools in the house, and tools/boxes in the garage.

i rarely have to go to the gareg or truck to get anything to do any DIY stuff around the house. i can usually take care of anything in the garage i want or need to do without getting tools from the house or truck.
