Toolboxes in Canada

Hello everyone,

Has anyone been able to find decent toolboxes in Canada at non took truck prices? Looking for something 25 inches or so deep but it seems like all the big box stores carry are the shallow boxes. I look at the American Home Depot website and they have plenty of options for deeper tool boxes.

The only I can find is a maximum tool box that is 30 inches deep but that runs for $3k which is pretty crazy.

Unfortunately SPG International is gone...I bought my 56" wide, 24" deep top and bottom for $1000 a few years back up here off of Amazon.ca of all places, free delivery too lol

Anything at Canadian Tire will go on sale, that $3000 box will likely drop to close to $1000 on sale.

$3000 for a maximum box? I don't recall seeing any Maximum tool boxes on the flyer with a regular price of higher than $2000 or so. When it goes on sale, it should be $1000 or lower. To be honest you are kind of picky.
If it is from a big box store, I'd be happy with 18" deep. Even the Harbor Freight ones are only 22" deep and not all Snap on and Mac boxes are 25" or deeper.

Kitchener is less than a 3 hour drive from the closest Michigan Harbor Freight store. For the price difference, even with paying duties and taxes at the border, you're probably just better off picking what you want up there.

Used you could find a good deal if you're patient, but if you're picky about dimensions and colors and layout then at least going the HF direction you get exactly what you want.

If you stay less than 24 hours in USA, expect to be dinged 13% sales tax at the border

Cost of box in USD + sales tax in whichever state, convert to CAD and add 13%, will give you an idea, also add in the time and gas. Also you will want to un-package the toolbox while in the US to see if damages are there.

This is pretty accurate I believe. There are a bunch of websites if you search "Canada import fees" where you select drop down menus that will give you the total cost at the border.

If you stay for at least 48 hours in the US then you can import up to $800 in purchases without any fees. So if you had an excuse to be there for a couple days, like take the wife on a mini vacation, golf weekend, whatever, you could bring a box back for free.

Agrred. Ask the manager for scratch and dents since they often have some with a crunched corner or fist sized dent you can fix later, if you want.
Less money for the border thieves. Buy tarps, shop rags and tape to wrap it all up.
Don't tranport in the original box and tell the customs freaks they wrapped it up with the materials. I stated. No manuals. No box. No nada.Tarps, rags, tape. Extra tape in the car/pickup." floor model/with "damage"

Given the exchange rate right now, plus all the fees to bring it up here, buying in the US does not make a lot of sense. The HF boxes aren't as nice as everyone makes them out to be either. The $500 44" box will end up being $800 CAD at least, if not close to $1000 by the time you factor in the tax, exchange, duty, cost of driving there, etc.

I assume you've made the rounds though to all the stores here that sell boxes?

- Home Depot
- Lowes
- Canadian Tire
- Napa
- Costco
- TSC
- Princess Auto
- Amazon

The only ones I’ve seen deeper than 18 inches are a hutch and chest combo at HD for $2000 and the Maximum one at Canadian Tire that runs for $3000.

Unfortunately that's just what you're going to find at retail stores. Unless you want to pay bigger $$$ for tool truck brands, you aren't going to ever find much in the deeper sizes. Going to the states is an option but isn't going to save you anything. Why does it need to be the deeper size? You can also grow taller/wider.

I think the point of the thread is to find the best value on a deep tool box in Canada. I'm guessing OP has realized he could buy taller or wider boxes in any chain store for a good price if that was a route he wanted to go.

Paying duties and extra taxes definitely *****, but it still might be the best alternative. And if you or a friend or family member stays for more than 48 hours south of the border then you avoid the duties.

Not much room for taller or wider. Industrial setting instead of automotive. We don’t have the space really.
Space limited and industrial? Then I'd suggest just spending the money on a pro level box (snapon, matco, lista, etc.) rather than a consumer box. One they'll hold up better, two you'll get actual support for it if it breaks, and three they are far more space optimized than cheap consumer boxes. Mine as nice as it is for home use, could probably fit an extra drawer or two and a few thousand more cubic inches of space within the same chassis.

I’d love to have a pro level box but I can’t personaly justify it. It’s just not a priority in my budget.
Well, you have your options then:

- Harbor Freight
- Find a used box
- Pay for pro level box
- Settle with an 18" box

:)

I have the metal Kirkland one from Costco. I’m not sure how deep it is, but it’s a great box.

There’s also gray tools. Sometimes their stuff goes on sale.

Leave it to government employee's to misspell the name of the one actual Canadian manufacturer. "Reach" :lol_hitti

EDIT: I want this https://www.gcsurplus.ca/mn-eng.cfm...type=&lci=&str=26&ltnf=1&frmsr=1&sf=ferm-clos
