So I am suffering with tools that have accumulated from different sources and I am constantly looking for them. I saw these being tossed out and decided to snag them:

Not sure what I was going to do with them but the I had a moment. Drawer dividers, not only that but that makes a select group of tools removable at a time. So with a very sharp razor knife I started performing surgery on these and here are some before and after shots:

And one more to show the progression of how this should speed up work time by being able to find tools quicker:

That is my project in a nut shell

I have several of the yellow bins that I purchased at a Woodworker's Warehouse store during the going out of business sale.

Before I do the razor blade surgery, I am experimenting with how to organize my tools.

I may have thought twice about it as well if I had money ******* on them but I had time and free bins so....

Absolutely I have twice already because I did not have the top portion of the tool chest until I finished the garage addition. I did have a drawer dedicated to electrical items, solder iron, meter etc but pulled all that out and used a old plastic tool box because it can go where I need to go!

You will find that you will move and reorganize as your go.

Yeah I do need suggestions on the socket drawer as that is one I have not tackled yet! It is quite the mess! So show me any shortcuts you have !
it's always fun when one new socket addition to the fold means having to reorganize an entire drawer's contents.

Ok how much more I am open to suggestions?

i see a lot of mixed up tool types, i'd start by separating tools by type,

screwdrivers
pliers
wrenches combo's, DOE, DBE,
seperate MM & std

sockets
drive tools, ratchets, extensions, ect

test eq,
meters, test lights

marking & measuring tools

all in seperate drawers.
it takes some time, you may have to rearrange things more than once to fit stuff in the drawers you have available.

take a look through the show your toolbox threads, you'll find many ideas.

I have sockets and ratchets in my top drawer. Wrenches in second drawer with a few files. Third drawer is tools with hinges, also known as pliers. Fourth drawer is torque wrenches, impact wrenches and hammers. Fifth drawer is hardware. Nuts and bolts. Sixth is car polisher, specialty once every three year car service tools and other stuff.

On the right drawers, top drawer is drill bits. Second is misc metric stuff like taps and dies. Third drawer is screwdrivers. Fourth odds and ends. Fifth is electric impact wrench, drill and some mechanical presses.

On the left is a mess.

In any event, grouping helps me. Screwdriver drawer annoys me.

I am not as neat as I would like to be. I do try to put things back as it annoys me when I lose tools.
