I have a 2001 Ford Ranger. Also, I have been slowly over the last few months been buying tools to start a tool set/collection.

I am wondering if I should focus on metric or standards more? Which will my truck require the most? I am a new do it yourselfer and will not do anything major, just basic repairs an idiot like me can handle.

Thanks for your help!

In your travels, you may want to think about the proper torx bit of you ever need to take the bed off...............May be a T55, I have been told......

Wouldnt pass a bargain on any tool. May not be required for the ranger but whatever you drive in the future or someone elses car.

I've done tons of stuff to my 2002 Ranger.... brakes, tire rotations, oil and filter, camshaft synchronizer, belt and tensioner, tuneups and interior stuff. The only thing I can think of that needed an SAE tool was the spark plugs (and maybe the O2 sensors, but I haven't replaced them yet). Like others have said, concentrate on the metric first, but don't pass up on any good deals on SAE. Get a good T-55 too for the seat tracks in the cab, and the bed bolts. My understanding is, if you ever have to change the fuel pump, its much easier to remove the bed to do it.

My '89 uses mostly the normal tools, nothing really special, these are needed though.

12pt 12mm wrench or socket, driveshaft

T15 to T55 torx set, various parts have torx, plus interior trim, ete...

5.5mm socket in 1/4 drive, various ingition parts and some dash

If you have a 4wd a slide hammer, spindle puller, and 4wd lock nut socket are needed for some repairs on the front axle.

My '95 Ranger was mostly metric. There may have been some SAE stuff here and there, but everything on the engine/transmission/axle/brakes was metric. FWIW, it had the 2.3L SOHC engine, which was designed as a metric engine from the start.

Granddad has a 2001 Ranger. Off hand I can remember you need an 8 and 10mm for MANY things buried under covers in the engine bay. If you want to take out the seats you'll need Torx plus. Maybe just invest in a lot of torx as stated here as there are a lot. Good luck man, you'll figure out what you need as you go on. That's how I work anyway. You'll never know till you know, y'know?
