If he's going to work commercial at all and want him to be ahead of the game/standout, get him a good bit driver set. Primarily one that has the majority of tamper proof bits(torx). Not necessarily to carry around all day but at least to carry in his truck. Nothing worse than trying to meet a deadline and watching 15 electricians trying to hang 100s of fancy lights, yet all be fighting over the ONE tamper proof bit. For my own sanity I went out and bought a couple to give to them (if it wasn't so sad/stupid it would have been funny).

All I needed in my frist year electical and the tools I use 95% of the time stil.

A 5/16 slotted screwdriver
A pair of 9 1/4" slipp joints
A 10in1 driver
A cresent wrench
A pair of needle nose
A pair of dianglonal cutters
A hacksaw
A pair of wire stripers
A t5-600 tester
A terminal block screwdriver.
A measuring device.
A olfa knife

Get everything except the buttom five tools from snap-on. He will have the basis of a great working tool collection

Depending on what king of work he is doing I would also suggest a m12 impact and a 1/4" socket set.

Olfa knives are awesome. Always sharp when you need it.
