Tools found under hoods?

Very first car I ever owned many years ago needed a new alternator (this was before I had really started to get into anything mechanical) and I took it to the local Pep Boys ( I know, I know...).

After I picked up the car I drove back to work and as I was nearing my shop, I started hearing a squeal from under the hood... After I parked I opened up the hood and saw a 1/4" impact gun (don't remember the brand) had fallen from somewhere in the engine compartment onto the plastic panel and slid under the crank pulley that started cutting a nice groove in it...

Needless to say, I haven't been back to Pep Boys in many years!

I work at a shop and I hope a tool got left on accident that the customer would return it. They are not cheap haha

I have found some basic tools in the street though and also a trailer hitch.

I found a snap on dale Earnhardt edition flathead screwdriver on top of an Eaton 5406N doing a clutch once.

Never found anything else worth using.

I did lose a green handled Matco locking flex head 3/8" ratchet on an International 4300 once. I was attaching the exhaust to the back of the turbo and used it to tighten the clamp then it was gone. I was in a hurry and someone distracted me. I looked all over that truck and never found the ratchet.

A screwdriver was found in the moulding on my buddies lotus elise clamshell , perfectly moulded into both sides of the joint. Reckons it came from factory as as far as he knows he was the first to take the clam off to rebuild the head.

I found a snap on green rubber handle fat flat screw driver in the bumper on my truck

I found a 1/4inch 8mm socket clinging onto my roo bar for dear life while fitting new plates - only it was one id lost a while before .... Apparently while fitting said roo bar it would seem.

Took my van for a service when i was. Busy once and got terrible service - and a broken airbox to boot which they denied.... How ever was made up for when i found a snap on foam crawler mat im the back after getting it home. Never went back there - mostly cause they were baws.

In each case, neither I nor the vehicle owner had any idea where the tools came from, so I kept them.

1) Nice 3/8" drive Blackhawk ratchet.

2) Very handy little 3/8" drive "wobble" extension, extra-short. I've never seen one that short before or since, but dang that little booger is handy in tight spaces. It's about an inch overall, giving about 5/8" of extension.

3) Nice set of US-made Craftsman slipjoint pliers. Slightly rusty, but they cleaned up well enough.

4) Nice green 3D size Mag-lite flashlight. Laying on a pickup bumper, almost out of view between the body and the bumper.

5) Nice red 2D red Mag-lite. Found in one of the gutters on our house. No idea how long it had been up there, but it worked fine with fresh batteries.

6) Yellow plastic 2D magnetic flashlight marked "CITIZENS GAS" under the sink after we moved in. I guess I know where it came from, but I had to do a lot of work to extract the corroded batteries and get it working, so I'm keeping it. Plus, our house is all electric -- no gas service at all -- so I don't know why anyone from the gas company would have been crawling around under there.

I found a small size locking pliers (vise grip) underneath one of our fleet vehicles. I left a sign at our time-clock for a month and nobody claimed it. I now use it nearly every day.

Bought a 64 Plymouth for $20-parts car. Inside the trunk I found a battery charger, torch set-minus tanks, paint gun, various combination wrenches-vintage craftsman, sockets, electric razor, etc. A few years later found a 20" tool box in the road full of SK & Craftsman,Thorsen, etc. no I.D. so still using them.

Hose clamp, on a brake line a few blocks from where I had my calipers replaced. Stopping the truck when it pulled hard to one side so that's where I found it, took it off, and took it back to the beet red mechanic.

I started a thread like this shortly after I joined here and I got all blown up for it.

I was called a thief and a criminal, and what not.

It was crazy, it was.
