Hey friends,
anyone in here who has a Wiha Inomic needle nose plier? I got my hands on one recently and was disappointed by the cutting ability of it. All cables seem to be cut kind of unclean and fraying. Can anyone confirm or confute? Thanks ...

When I was wandering around the local hardware store yesterday I noticed a hidden gem among all of the Chinese junk. It was a Stihl splitting maul. A little research shows that it is a re-branded Ochsenkopf from...guess where. The quality of German tools just makes them shine compared to the rest of the **** in the store.

http://ochsenkopf-werkzeuge.de/de/products/group_articles.html?oe_opt[list_set]=104521,104543,104544

http://www.stihlusa.com/handtools/PA80-Splitting-Maul.html

A good splitting maul is an excellent tool, for some reason many people over in the UK hardly ever seem to use them and often knacker multi purpose axes instead.

I have one that's identical to the Stihl ones so it could well be an Ochsenkopf, plus I have recently got a splitting wedge to complement it, to be honest there's not much that the maul can't cope with after its been chainsawed to length.

Servus, Monte,

The Stahlwille screwdriver pictured in your post closely resembles my dad's Witte "Quadro" screwdriver:

Hai! T20
I dont have a Wiha Inomic needle nose plier yet..but from my experienced it is a normal condition when u used a standard jaw plier to cut a cables,if u want a nice clean cut at ur cable use a half circle type jaw plier..
Btw: Knipex offer a good cable cutters..

@mrtools:
Thanks for the pics my friend:thumbup: It somehow looks like if you need some new tools;)
Seriously, I didn't make myself clear here maybe. See my experience is that if you have standard jaw pliers of good quality, you obtain a rather clean cut surface. And even more important - with one cut only! My NWS and Knipex do as I expect. I don't know about other Wiha standard pliers, since I don't have a lot of Wiha tools. The cut surface is one thing but I need several run-ups to cut a 1,5mm² cable. It's frustrating if you want to use one tool for several tasks and it doesn't work right at some. I wouldn't carry additional cable shears for such small cables. I think I should try the NWS counterpart, since my other NWS standard jaw pliers do a great job. The ones I have just don't have that stripping feature and I've wanted one plier to do both.

I agree:D
Btw : Wiha make a very good screwdrivers.. for pliers or cutter go to NWS or Knipex, both are expert to makes a plier or cutters:rocker:

These diamond-coated insert bits available from Lee Valley are the Athlet bits from Germany:

So far, the Phillips seem to work pretty well.

Britool rebranding campaign

I noticed Britool is undergoing a rebranding effort, the logo has a strong resemblance to Facom, the color of choice is Blue. Does anybody know if this would mean also a boost in the overall quality of their products, almost Facom quality at a (significant) lower price point?

The plan is Britool to Facom as Blue Point is to Snap-on. The spanners they're now selling as Britool Expert are pretty good quality (Taiwan) as are the screwdrivers (France, also sold as Stanley FatMax in European markets and as BOST in France.)

The marketing genius who devised the plan to close Britool's UK production, replace it with worthless Chinese ****, then, having destroyed the brand's century old reputation for quality at affordable prices, relaunch and rebrand it as providing quality at affordable prices, resulting in tools which nobody will want because of the company's recent history, no doubt got a raise

Here is a nice Japanese set I found on Ebay. With my Ebay bucks it came out to $10! I took it apart, forgot to take pictures, cleaned it and greased it. It works great now and it is as smooth as silk.

I finally purchased a Mora Craftline HighQ Chisel knife. Wow, this knife is superb. Excellent, smooth finish.

My first Swedish tool!

Here are some of the my tools, I am only a 1st year electrical fitter apprentice so I am still in the middle of building my tool set. Hopefully the picutres work if not i'll try fix them after work tomorrow

My set of miniature BA spanners, made in england roughly 40 years ago and still in pretty good nick after all that use. I have never seen anything like them in the shops around here, and they actually come in extremely useful. Also some old Vessel brand sidecutters and wire strippers, made in japan:

I got the BA miniature spanners, sidecutters and wirestrippers from an old sparkie at work who was moving up to a health/safety position, traded for a 6 pack of beer  good deal I think:p

My "dowidat no.145" multigrips. They are made in germany, I found these in a dirty old 1MVA substation that I was tasked to clean out:

I got this set of imperial wrenches, 1/2" imperial socket set and the combination pliers from my old man, they are made by sidchrome in Australia "before they were bought out and moved all their production to Taiwan and turned to ****" as he says , there is also a huge old bahco adjustable wrench, made in Sweden, also from my old man. I have no idea how or why he aquired it and I'm not sure if I'll ever find a use for it:

I have also ordered a bunch of stahlwille, knipex, wera, NWS stuff from online because tools are really expensive here in Australia. I am still waiting for most of it to arrive.

EDIT: Damn it.. pictures dont seem to be working, I'll try to have them up tomorrow

How did you make that inlay?

Hey

That inlay is a layer of 1/2" plywood that has been cut out. then on top i cut out a sheet of blue rubber. There all over the place in the printing industry. there called blankets and are very durable rubber mats so i use them in my box all the time

Adam how much were those small wera drivers and where are they made?

american lockpicker,

I own 4 small Wera screwdrivers: model 118004, 1.8mm slotted (Czech Republic); model 118007, 2.0mm slotted (with long shaft, no COO); model 118035, Torx TX 1 (no COO); and model 118036, Torx TX 2 (no COO).

I purchased at Amazon the last Torx screwdrivers in stock. The prices for the two ranged between $6.00 and $7.50.

Is that an old Royal Dutch Shell logo on your cable cutter? I never saw such tools before. How old is it? Did Shell sell his own branded tools in Asia?

byte.size.life,

The logo on the cable cutter owned by "mrtools" is made by Shell (manufacturer of pliers) in Japan.

This link will provide you a close up of the Shell cable cutter head (with the faint manufacturer and COO stampings): http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28952&highlight=wrench+test+bahco+hazet&page=224 (post# 4464).

Facom has owned (or at least been a partner with) Britool for a while now but now the pair of them are owned by Stanley which I don't take as a good sign at all...

For those of you in the US, Menards is currently having a sale on their Masterforce levels. Now, normally, I get the hives just driving by a Menards but for some reason, the manufacturer of Masterforce levels is Stabila and they are darn good German-made levels.

So, even though they will be branded by a cheap name, it will be a made in Germany Stabila level.

I haven't had a chance to get over there yet so no pics :(

I have two Stabila magnetic torpedo levels and as expatriated says they are excellent quality. The magnets in particular are the strongest I've ever seen on a level.

Most Stabila levels are good (especially the cast aluminium ones) with the exception of the six foot extruded levels which don't seem to last well at all.
I have gone through a few of the six footers (because they can't take any abuse and bend) before changing to a Stanley Fat Max level which has lasted far and away better as its got a larger cross section.

I take care of my kit and the flex on the six footers frame was unacceptable.
If you look on them they have a hammer symbol with a box next to it, in that box there will be a few star symbols and the more stars the stronger they are.
I still have a two foot level made by them but that's one of the cast girder levels and its a quality piece of kit.
Working anywhere near the lads who do dry lining doesn't help mind as those dozy pillocks just pick anything close to hand to batter the dry lining back straight:mad:
I don't mind paying for quality and looking after it but Stabila got enough of my money for what I though were quality six foot levels so I'm not buying any more of those, the girder levels like this...
stabila-83s-level-double-plumb-073149S.jpg

that they make are a different matter and I would recommend them without hesitation.

mrtools,

Which cable cutters do you prefer the most in terms of durability, sharpness, and producing clean cuts with least amount
of cable compression: Marvel or Shell?

Thanks,

Dave
