@Automatique: I thought about the material before your question, but You found it just now - I think it is made of Bakelite.

@Jure: Bought it in local pawnshop, they have plenty of old tools there. About the car, I don't know, and I can't read cyrillic also - maybe somebody here will recognize that vehicle :)

The writing says:
Crosshead screwdriver set
Article number 25-122
Set price 9p.

I'm with Jure, it's a Lada. Look at the over-riders and the number plate surround.

And I picked up some Heyco combi-pliers too. The thing I like is they are very thin... Anybody knows how old they can be?

the ones i do have are from Unior, "160"(model/size?), bought "new" on a street corner in Trieste for 3€:D, overall finish and "hand-ability" - yeah, i do make-up words as i go :D - are quite good and better than the other one that is from "Hapewe Germany" which looks exactly like yours and is not that good looking as the Unior notas smooth to use, but hey! for 1 euro you can't expect the finish of a 3€ one! :spit: both are useful and way thinner than the classical combi-pliers...

@Flyingkite: Are you serious, or is it joke? And in case you are serious, where do you have this information from? I'm interested in any info about that mysterious screwdriver :D

Wow this thread took an interesting turn. :) So what frequencies do they use?

(Radio especially MW and SW is another hobby of mine.) :)

Transmissions indeed, but nothing worthwhile. That's why the called it the woodpecker, from the "sound" it transmitted. For years! I don't think we know the point of it, even now. They do look rather cool though :D

I like Soviet history, it's fascinating. Have you heard of Ekranoplans?

Thanks, the separator weighs in at 2.935kg. It was EUR 84.80, including shipping from Germany to England, bought through Amazon.de. Much cheaper than i had expected it to be, seems Kukko's pricing is very reasonable. :)

Do you have many Unior tools? I have a number of their Ribe-CV socket drivers and hex keys, all of which are very nice quality. I don't know their country of origin though. They all seem very well made, but i haven't had a chance to use the Ribe drivers yet.

I was surprised when you identified the product on the fly, now I know why. Ham radio operators were not the only ones who were in trouble with the reception due to the interference from Woodpecker, a lot of official complaints flooded soviet authorities in 1976.

This over-the-horizon radar never worked on the fixed frequency. A very sophisticated system scanned SW frequency range ( 7 to 19 MHz) and selected work channel with the optimal signal to noise ratio and the best radio wave propagation. After setting work frequency scanner continued search for the the backup channels switching to one of them immediately after reception in the work channel has deteriorated.

That's why sometimes amateur radio operators were able to combat this interference from Woodpecker by transmitting synchronized unpopulated continuous wave signals at the same pulse rate as the offending signal. They even formed a club called the Woodpecker Hunting Club.

The growing number of official complaints (mostly from Sweden and Norway) caused system developers to create a black list of the forbidden frequencies compiled from the complaints.

Now it's a history.
