That was when the cars where at exchange rates of $1.60 for a euro. It was not a lie. I have very good friends that worked for BMWNA in NJ. And he knew the real deal with the price for a German made 5, 6, 7 which comes form germany, you were paying msrp. The 3 and x are made in the US, then you got deals.

And at 37k msrp you did not get a 5, 6 or 7 series.

No, it was a C class. That, back when it was $1.6 to a euro they managed to give us an SLK that was German made that had a $59k sticker for $48k. There are big margins involved, they're just hidden behind several backdoors. Maybe MB just hedges against exchange rates better.

Nope, there's no protective tariff in place (there's a tariff, but a small one). I think it's a case of "this is at least as good as Snap On if not better, so we should charge at least as much as Snap On in the US market." Though, it is true that we are presently getting slaughtered on the exchange rate and shipping costs, but I think it's telling how little the prices changed despite large changes in the exchange rate.

As far as I know there is no protective tariff for imports. There is an import duty of 0% (for tool carts) and around 9-12% for tools depending on which state you live in. I charge my international customers the German price plus actual shipping and from how much I sell it seems that this is a reasonable offer.

MBNA might have hedge or paid for their order before the euro got to 1.50 or 1.60.

I didn't realize you were on the forums. Yeah, I've seen your prices. You and Ash are pretty competitive in my experience, but check the prices of the average US dealer for these tools...you'd be amazed.

Are you sure that there is a non-hexavalent hardchromium process? I am involved i a research project of the German government where they search for non hexavalent replacements for hard chromium (opposed to decorative chrome). AFAIK there is no galvanic solution.

i don´t know, i read it somewhere here in this forum :) i thought it´s banned because it´s toxic or so...

My first show off in this thread. Bought a Bacho tool cart. Seems nice and stable, weight 75 kilo. Only drawback so far is that the other drawers are not 100% locked when one is out, though there is the kind of friction brake holding them, so I hope it won't be a problem. 360 € felt ok compared to the alternatives available here.

Well I know Ash and in my eyes he is a very reputable and honest businessman and a nice guy.

As far as the prices are concerned you need the purchase price, the packing and shipping costs and whatever taxes and import duties you have to pay. And then you want to earn money from your trade. If you are modest with your earnings the customers will trust you. So add the import duties and the shipping on top of my prices and compare them with the local sellers and then it is a fair comparison. Also you have to take into account that you might trust a local seller more than me and that might be worth a couple of bucks...

Do you know who produce pliers and other tools for "reca" - Austria?

screwdrivers Felo, some wrenches might be Heyco, pliers knipex (?), hammers MOB/Peddinghaus, bits wera + wiha, hex wrenches wiha + hafu, socket sets import + germany.
Depends on the tool.... with a picture identification often is possible......

Miskin,

That oulee wrench with "Japan" has got to be a joke! That wrench came together with the CNC machine?

In Japan, Eight is known in only some industries. Not too commonly found, AFAIK. They do have a patent on their ball-head hex profile, which is unique:
j_taper_head.gif

Superautobacs I can't see how this is a QC issue. :)

Yes, you're totally right that it isn't a slip in manufacturing QC. ...it's the sales QC that slipped. ....but their service rep didn't dissapoint me so that was a sure plus  I still like Gedore tools, and enjoy seeing yours.

You must be referring to the switch from the use of hexavalent to trivalent chromium:
EU formed the RoHS directive and certain industries have to comply with their regulations. One being the transition from hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium. Certain major tool companies in the 1st world have already made the change (voluntarily or involuntarily). Snap-on, Apex (Danaher), KTC/Nepros, Ko-ken, etc. The same should apply to European brands as well.

I have never owned a Wiha screwdriver, so i had to buy some and test them.
Well i must say that they are nice and fits my hands good. I also think that you can feel that the tips are harder then Wera.
This is a special edition/color for the Hager group. I like them...:D

Yes they are a bit harder then the wera, I use wiha exclusively when doing electrical work. They are excellent drivers. Like the special color set.

Does anyone know how old this set is? Also there is empty space in upper part of box. What's missing, any ideas?

Decaf,

I love that colour scheme...reminds me of Gulf Oils.

The toolbox contains more jokes. A taiwanese screwdriver made in USA!

Thanks :bounce:

I think that people don´t know the value of premium tools in many cases, that gives me opportunity to buy expensive tools really cheep :rocker:
Sometimes i get tools (new) for 30% of the real price. :headscrat

That's what I usually do too. I try not to be impulsive and hunt for good prices. This Wiha set you got really looks sweet! :D

Today's arrival. I paid £1.24 for this, and it will only ever see occasional use, so I'm not fussed, but I suspect this is outsourced in every sense. It doesn't have the look or feel of anything else Facom I've seen or handled, and it just has the name and part number stamped (no logo or distinct castings).

It came in Facom packaging so I'm not doubting it's authentic, but I think they just found a supplier for a tool they weren't particularly interested in making (or designing) themselves. Not saying it's bad, but it's not the "same". The finish is almost Stahlwille-like.

Excuse the poor quality phone pic:
