Does anyone know that these punches are for:
IMG_9926.jpg

Searching for the part number (Tirem 3130) seems to just say normal parallel punches, but this one is clearly special. And it's not a custom grind, there's three of them.

I'm thinking some kind of buttons/rivets?

They look like roll pin punches to me.

Some roll pins have sharp ends which are very tough on regular punches, hence the special tools.

I have a set, and use them a lot.

The example you show looks to be very nice. The rounded ends are for locating the tool in the pin.

Who made the clear, red handled hex screwdriver above?

It has no brand, just a W. Germany marking what I can see.

Thank you! I've heard of roll pin punches but never had one so didn't know.

That screw driver is a carburetor adjustment tool. The carburetor is vibrating and the shroud keep the screwdriver on it.

Was at an indoor car boot/antique type place and spotted some 'EGA Master' spanners with 'Spain' on them. I have seen some of their tools on Amazon and assumed they were Taiwan/China importers, but they claim to be a 'European manufacturer of premium industrial tools' on their website. Anyone know if they make/made tools in Spain.

So dumb, I have 'SAM Outillage' pliers but never realized what 'Outillage' means until now.

I believe that all the specialty tools, non sparking, titanium, and few other things are actually made in SPAIN, the rest like spanners, ratchets and more appear to be China/Taiwan.

Thank you! When I've heard the term "Carburettor screwdriver" it usually means a stubby screwdriver or one with a special tip for the carbs that have non standard screw types. Interesting with this type!

What is the purpose of having the bit end twisted 90 degrees from the T-handle?

Don't know, but the first thing I can think of is that you get a wider driver by using the diagonal instead of straight across. A 8mm square bar gives a 11mm diagonal.

I only have a couple of VBW pliers (mostly Stahlwille branded ones) but have seen no such design issues. They do make some odd choices though, the pair of Alligator-type pliers I have a painted black instead of having black oxide finish. Really strange and makes them feel cheap.

Wow, that's not OK. The missprint would be acceptable, but that moulding error should never have passed QC and been shipped to a customer.

Thanks for the tip, that looks like a good design. In my experience Channellock is quite crudely finished, but works.

Cool!

Nice find!

Some recent purchases for me:

Some highlights first, like these NOS Dowidat pliers:

This Facom French made stubby T-handle:

And some questions!

Does anyone know what these Botalit special screwdrivers are for?

There are specialty slot head screwdrivers with an outer sleeve that prevents the screwdriver from slipping off the screw head.
Apex and maybe Zephyr in the USA make them, maybe for the aerospace industry. They’re not ultra common, but more then one manufacturer makes them, so they’re some type of industry standard.

Which Sandpaper is the Best? Ultimate Sandpaper Showdown
Thanks for the link !
Just a by the by, Festool do not make abrasives themselves, the Festool Grant paper is made by SIA in Switzerland and rebranded Granat, dyed blue and sold at at a premium. Anybody using Granat can make a big saving by sourcing the equivalent SIA which is SIA1950 (the pink disc).
iirc the Granat paper is "made in Czech Republic".

Have a pair of Snap On "Talon Grip" 597CF pliers in my tool bag.

Haven't touched them in about two years. Pulled the out yesterday only to find that they are about 1/3rd covered in surface rust - in low humidity northern CA.

Never again. My first and last SO pliers purchase!

Edward Preston 1390 spokeshave

Arrived this morning - model 1390 (I think) Edward Preston spoke shave. Quite reasonable condition for its presumptive age. Japanning has seen better days, but the steel faces are quite good.

According to the company web-page all 100% of their products are Made in Germany, they have 3 plants: Wuppertal-Cronenberg (original Stahlwille place), former VBW in Remscheid and former SWM in Steinbach-Hallenberg (Thuringia). As you see, nothing is mentioned on the wrenches, I haven't received them in original individual packagings, most probably they come from some bulk boxes.

You are right, they seem to be almost identical. I guess it is not Irega 99W (opening 24 mm) but Irega 99 - opening of 6" is 20 mm.
Well, so not Made in Germany, that explains -40% special offer :(

I doubt making them in Spain is any cheaper than Germany. That’s not why they were on sale.

I think Irega also make adjustables for Hazet, Elora, Wright, Channellock etc. Good spanners.

Bahco is made by Irimo, another Spanish tools maker, belonging to SNA Europe. I have two Irimo-made Bahco wrenches as well as few older made in Sweden

Would you like to clarify - only mechanical tools are discussed here? Or can you lay out instruments-for example, old testers? I have, for example, several old testers who are probably forty years old but they are still in good condition and workers are also. For example, see.

The Bahco carpenter's knife is one of the best "cheap" knives you can buy, very sharp and the edge holds up fairly well. I buy them six or eight at a time on sale and give them to friends.

Here's a couple of old clutches. They're small, but they're old, too. There are big ones. It will be necessary to take a photo and post.

A pair of Auriou rasps arrived today. Made in France, hand stitched: cabinet rasp grain 11, and a Modellers rasp grain 13. Walnut handles.

Beautiful smooth cuts on Jarrah. Much different beasties than my Vallorbes.

I googled 'hand stitched' rasps as I wasn't sure what it meant. Watched the same vid. Amazing stuff.

Screenshot from a Narex vid comparing machine cut edges to hand stitched.
