Yes, this thread is too large indeed. Going by post count this thread hails #1. It's jammed packed with tooooo much information. I'm sure there's enough information and interest to start an entirely new forum. ....but who's going to do it? :D

not a pry bar :)

yeeeah... (where's that BS flag smiley?). Because a large flathead is never used that way... It really snapped with very little pressure. I had even placed a folded up glove between the shaft and rotor hat to keep from marking the screwdriver. It was really disappointing.

I'm not sure I'd want a whole new forum, but I wouldn't mind seeing this thread locked and a new sequel to it started, perhaps a couple of them to split it up a little bit...

I use a Wera 900 and now a Wurth (Felo) screwdriver for such task.

Oh, I like the fact this is the most active and longest thread on GJ, but it would be much more convenient to find things if we started up again with a new thread as a continuation :D

Then, I would have to look through TWO different threads--I'd never remember which one had the tool I was looking for:(

Luckily sometimes you can find NOS made in England tools...

Look out for abrasives of all types from brands like Walter and Klingspor (there's others out there)--they are still made in England.

 OMG!!!! That video you posted is just hilarious!

I bought this Soviet-made 1/4" socket set on EBay a few years ago, mostly out of curiosity. The ratcheting handle has very low tooth count and has a rough feel to it. The chrome looks pretty good. Sockets are machined rather crudely. Tray insert is very thin and flimsy, making it hard to take out extensions.

Back in the day this set cost 17 rubles (the price is stamped on the tray insert). In prices of late 1980s, 17 rubles would buy 1.5 bottles of Stoli or about 80 loaves of rye bread.

@Ilya,

That's very interesting; thanks for sharing.

Those cold forged sockets are quite crudely made, indeed. They spend minimal time in cleaning up the sockets before they get a chrome bathing.
The ratcheting handle is surprisingly quite similar to a Japanese one I have, under the brand "WISE". Same style handle. I should take pictures of mine and post it for comparisons sake.

I was going through my box tonight and stumbled across my WISE pistol-grip ratcheting screwdriver and that got me thinking about the post above. I took a couple pictures:

The racheting is light and the ergonomics is right, but the tooth count is so low. Still works, but it's just a collection item.
It sits inside this tin box that came from Bremen, in northern Germany. :D

Those darn Hazets just break, anyway. :shocking:

Luckily, I have a dealer who goes above and beyond. Pretty disappointed with this, though.

Jens, I thought you weren't impressed too much with the Smart Case?
As for the screwdriver: As I said in a PM I believe that you should not be able to destroy a screwdriver by the force of your own hands whatever you pry away on. Just my personal opinion.

As for the smart case: I personally prefer the old-school design layout of the 853 and 854 series, but the look and feel of the smart case is very nice.

BTW: Only Porsche breaks Hazet, so it's not too bad ;-)

Those black and decker electric chainsaws are really crappy , maybe if you whip out the chainsaw once or twice a year for smaller stuff they would be ok.Only unleaded has enough power to run chainsaws , hedge trimmers , blowers etc properly.

Also those newer stanley chisels on the back it still says 'sheffield steel' , the cheaper models are made in Asia but those premium fatmax ones are still england.

Thor hammers = next on my to buy list , although they are like 80 bucks each here.Even the wooden mallets are like 40 dollars each.

Bart strong like bull. I suspect tempering may not have been exactly right on this one.

Maybe you might have a chance to take some pictures of the smart case and standard set side by side?

"We dont need spares. Porsche cars, even when rally prepared, do not break". ;). (may be slightly off- think I quoted it once before in this thread)

I'm thinking of getting a set of stahlwille 13 combis in metric to complement my AF 14s. I've been measuring my current import metric set, and the 13s are quite a bit shorter, even though my imports aren't 'long'. Could anyone with 13s, or maybe both, comment on their length. I dong want to buy a set of 13s and then feel handicapped by their length, but they buying 14s individually will cost a lot more!

I wish this stuff was more avaliable in the UK!

I have the 13 combis and oldjacks got the long pattern 14's?. I wrench on a BMW motorcycle and have had issues with long pattern wrenches in the past they do not clear things because they are to darn long. If i need leverage I have an 18" breaker to put the hammer down or I will smack the wrench with a rubber mallet. I love the Stahlwille stuff. I was unsure at first with all the hoop pla over hazet. IMO hazet have got nothing on the Stahwille but a soothing blue color. talk about drinking the kool aid.

Yes I agree 100%. Also I nominate Monte to be a moderator over that. I spend a lot of time in this thread and have to go through many pages to find stuff all the time.

That probably would be a good idea. I saw similar approach on one of the photo forums (Nikon D40-D50-D90-D200 etc.) They split Nikon thread into 200-post volumes and provided links to other volumes at the beginning of each volume.

Speaking of Stahlwille and Hazet which is better? I know Hazet has nice boxes.

I have tools from both. They are about equal (HAZET makes certain tools better and Stahlwille makes others better). Monte did a great comparison some time ago between the two brands (go to page 12 of this thread). I much prefer HAZET tool boxes, but I like the Stahlwille torque wrenches the best. Here in the USA, it is much easier and cheaper to get your hands on Hazet. Either way you won't be dissapointed.

9144,

Do you know what is the specific function of the whole on the open end of the Facom stubby wrench? I have never seen something like it.

@Monte have you heard of the comedian Michael Kessler? Anyways he did those "10 Dinge" skits on a show that I think was called Kessler's Knigge and he actually has one in a hardware store. It used to be on Youtube but was removed. You might try looking for it on a German language video site its pretty funny.

Also I'm looking at combination wrenches, box end wrench and some sockets.

I really like the older Hazet with the colour decal logo on them and the older Stahlwille with the "Stronger than Any Bolt" phrase its a shame the newer ones don't have those. For finish I prefer polished chrome but that seems to be an American/Asian thing.

@johnnybentwrench I know I post a few(a lot? :p) off topic things in here but its all old world... Anyways I've read the whole thread a few times since I've been here and occasionally I want something I seen in here so I usually use search to find it but as the thread gets bigger its hard when theres a hundreds of things from Facom, Hazet, Knipex, etc. in here and your looking for something using that key word. Or its some obcsure tool like the Remscheid "vise grips" I've been looking for. Also I've never seen a US tin how are they better?

Oh on that Hazet display case I noticed in the middle at the bottom a pair of hose clamps. Are they made in AU(looks just like the craftsman ones except different colour) and who is the OEM?

I have some Hazet and Stahlwille and there is no clear winner. I like aspects of both. In their ratchets I find Stahlwille to have better fit finish and ergonomics but not as smooth in use.

Heyco offers polished sockets + wrenches.
