SATA is the world of American Danaher Group a wholly owned subsidiary in China - Danaher Tool (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. belongs to the brand. Most products are made in China, the quality is very general, there are several high-end pair of pliers and a screwdriver by Japan KEIBA and Germany WIHA for OEM. I bought two pair of pliers are 90RMB and 105RMB.

Thanks for the tip, in fact GearWrench® is also part of American Danaher Group, and I can attest that these are of good quality.
In the next, I will post my PICQUIC  screwdrivers, although they're made in Canada :) and do not come from the old world I consider high quality.

Very interesting! I've not seen any tools from Iran before. Do you know if they are pre-revolution?

I like the Elektron wrenches also! Do you have any more Cold War era tools from Warsaw Pact countries? I know a few have been posted on this thread before, but I find them fascinating and can't get enough of them

Here's an oldy from my Fathers set, been in use for a lot of years in less than pristine environments!

P1000797.jpg

Just found out yesterday that my dad got a full set of A/F VBW stuff for his 16th birthday. He's in his 70s now :) He still has the whole set and he's a farmer so they get used a lot.

If that isn't a plug for good tools then I don't know what is...

Does anyone own the Facom J.360 3/8 Drive Rotator Ratchet? I am looking for opinions. Are they really useful in tight spaces? Or just gimmicky? I am tempted to buy one, but would like to hear what actual owners think.

Nope, but I have handled one. And was rather impressed. Gimmicky- absolutely not! This rat is impressive. Usefulness - not sure but it is easy to imagine practical use for it in tight situations.

I am just waiting for good ebay deal to pull the trigger on this one.

Stahlwille is bad ***. For same price I buy Stahlwille over any other German manufacturer, including Hazet.

I am going to get a complete metric set of Stahlwille Corona. From 8-32mm.:pimpflash

You're Welcome:thumbup:

@Duarte : I don't own the new Facom J.360, but i know it very well and i had the opportunity to handle one at my local store. I can only say I've heard and read many good things about it and it doesn't look as a gimmick. The system of rotating handle is pretty much interresting and could be very usefull in some narrow places. On the other hand, if i remenber correctly the J.360 is bigger than a regular 3/8 ratchet with no rotating system. I believe Gedore or Hazet will do something similar in a near future.

ps : I've would have prefer it to be made in France:)

I have both and prefer Hazet, but I havent made them duel to the death. Stahlwilles I beam design is very good for strength to weight ratio, though. On the German magazine test that has been posted before though (the only actual test I have seen) I think the Stahl failed and the Hazet and SnapOn didn't.

Regarding rotary/twist ratchets, here's a dedicated thread: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48846

BMI "BMImeter" (a.k.a. "QuickyPro") measuring tape:

www.bmi-quicky.de

That's pretty cool. It seems like a good option for light duty tasks around the house.

...
On the German magazine test that has been posted before though (the only actual test I have seen) I think the Stahl failed and the Hazet and SnapOn didn't.

IMO, as interesting as those tests may be, I only take them in with a grain of salt. Failure/break point figures are not too important to me unless I'm a person that habitually places a pipe extension on a wrench.
....but in retrospect, if you were looking to purchase some extra long wrenches, those figures would be good to have as reference. :)

Another thing to keep in mind about such tests is that depending on the brand, the manufacturer might be conforming to a standard/specification (ANSI, ASME, DIN, ISO, JIS, etc). What that means is that there would be a variance in tolerance and dimensions. So, in order for the test to be fair, all these companies need to forge and finish a wrench (or whatever the test subject is) under a common set of standards in tolerance and in dimensions. If that could be done, then the break test would show who had formulated the best steel alloys, the best hardening/tempering processing, and the best surface treatment.

I do get your point though about the difference between a wrench that breaks/fails versus a wrench that's bending/flexing out of tolerance and slipping from the strain gauge. For the safety of the operator, you wan't to avoid a wrench/tool that just breaks/fails without warning.

you can´t go wrong with the Hazet series "600N" or Stahlwille "Open Box 14"

Looking at that picture gave me an idea.

A) A normal ratchet has the bulky ratcheting assembly in the head.
B) A rotator does the same but has a geared shaft down the handle.
C) Why not relocate the bulky ratcheting mechanism to the other end of the shaft? :dunno:

Not only would that move the big ratcheting mechanism out of the way from the head to the handle, but since it would be geared...you could have what would feel like a 300 tooth ratchet.

Thanks for re-posting!

The strongest was Hazet with 184nm open and 240nm box.
Snap-on flank drive had 143nm open and 240nm box.
Stahlwille had 143nm open and 209nm box.

But the real shock of that test was that a 1 euro HR wrench had the same strength test result as the Snap-on flank drive that cost well over 30 times more at 31.95 euros.
The test is in German so please correct me if I am wrong but it looks to me like Snap-on wrenches are seriously overpriced going by these results alone.

In my eyes though the real test winner was the Matador which was 180nm open and 240nm box but was less than half the price of the Hazet. Pity I cannot even get Matador wrenches in the UK or I would maybe be looking to get a set.

I am not much of a brand fan, my comment about Stahlwille was just to check the reaction from our tried and trusted Hazet fans. :)

Regarding this wrench test, and thanks for posting it Monte, I agree with superautobacs comments. I also like to point out in Stahlwille's defence that they only tested the featherweight "13 series" wrench. Against longer wrenches from other brands. Actually I am impressed how strong it is considering its weight. IMHO they should have included the "14 series" from Stahlwille. Longer and stronger wrench than the 13 series, and much heavier.

I was considering combination wrenches few weeks ago and shot this pic of 17mm 13 and 14 series Stahlwille for comparison. Not mine unfortunately.

Even though it is tempting to get a nice series 14 set from Stahlwille I think the double box Corona version is very nice and cheaper alternative. I seldom have to use ultra strong open end.
