Tools from the old world are conquering America?

I was surprised to find the Knipex stand in one of our local stores, Hanover Tool.

Hanover Tool store happened to be very similar to the German Bauhaus, maybe less glamorous but packed with tools from the top to the bottom! So I decided to take a store tour with my monster camera. This time (unlike my Bauhaus tour in Germany) I got an official permission from the store manager, a very nice and friendly lady.

Some tools are from the old world, some (actually most of them) not, but I found this store very different from the big box stores or Harbor Freight, the Garage Journal's "L'enfant terrible".

It so hard to make a decision (first new 230mm):D The Bosch cost about 210-220eur+up here,Bosch 5,4kg metabo 5,8Kg, which has better anti vibration,sds-clic nut??Okey The bosch looks a little better..

Difficult decision but like you mentioned Bosch is lighter, the Anti-vibration features are the same. Metabo has a 3-position side handle, Bosch 2. The main handle of the Metabo can be rotated, Bosch handle not. Metabo available with "Quick" nut, Bosch not afaik. Metabo also has a overload protection thermo switch. Output power is the same (1500 Watt).
Bosch makes the large angle grinders for Hilti so they are probably not that bad though :)

I bought these Nos Dowidat No.2 offset box-end wrenches a few weeks ago,and the rounded edges are very comfortable 20,- (the first new set for me,and perhaps the last)
How old they are? I'm not sure

nice !!!!! Good price !!! Thats a steal !!
i don´t know when "Dowidat" tools were sold the last time iirc somewhen around 1990 or so ???

Oh aag14V you might find it interesting that the Maglite pictured in that Swiss tool kit was designed by a Croatian but made in America. :)

I have a few of the older ones that are marked made in USA and have the nicer anodising that the newer ones don't have.

Croatia is in a difficult economic situation, it is difficult to find a job. I'm studying, and I plan to go out in the U.S. or Germany. Thanks for the information about the MagLite, but the sad thing is that nothing we can do nothing alone. In Croatia, the more important economic policy. :mad:
Will be better!:lol:

In America it is also difficult to find work. I had been looking for a proper job since 2008 and lucked into one in June yet I only get to work one day(down from 2 or 3 days(averaging 12-15 hours a week) if I was really lucky) a week now... Most here have 2-3 different jobs and barely make ends meet. America now is nothing like it was in 20th century. :sad:

I wish you good luck finding a new job.

While things here are a little bit better than in West Virginia I have a lot friends still hanging around with lousy jobs or without job at all.

PSA - I don't know... It is not from Swedish language, but can be from original desing PS, and this new one has PS + A.
PS could be original company that made these tools, Bahco did not actually start up factory for hand tools, they bought out other companys that where able to manufacture items for them. This I do not know for sure, but same tools can also found without Bahco name on them. Example old Bahco green screwdrivers from 1980's and 1970's can also be found in red grip, that only has text "Sweden" on them. This could mean that Bahco did not give screwdriver factory sell similar items that could be sold under Bahco name.
Some tools did actually came from Germany, and this is before Bahco bought Belzer.

Cool store! Nice owners to let you take pictures, and thanks for posting!

Thanks!

I tried out a new store. http://www.my-tool-shed.co.uk caught my eye with low prices and a good selection. I am happy with delivery time, packaging and shipping cost. Recommended!

So what did I get?

Well, the first thing I wanted was to complete the 1/2" 12-point Stahlwille set I got from Tradesmanschoise earlier. The 13 and 18mm sockets were not included in that. So I got them:
IMG_1008.jpg

But to my surprise the design has changed. Probably why Tradesmanschoise had them on sale. These ones are much more polished than the older ones. I forgot to take a comparison picture, will post later.

More, I got a Bahco needle file set.
IMG_1025.jpg

IMG_1027.jpg

IMG_1029.jpg

I also got more Bahco S-line stuff. Some breaker bars, 3/8" and 1/4". Unlike the 1/2" one these are made in Taiwan and they have another design.
IMG_1012.jpg

IMG_1033.jpg

More, some Wera stuff. Torx set:
IMG_1002.jpg

I got a Pozidriv 2 stubby. A design change here also. The surface texture is much coarser on the new one (to the left) versus one of the old ones (to the right)
IMG_1024.jpg

And a Kraftform Kompakt 20.

@Duarte: Nice Toptul, price?
I prefer the 60 gear mechanism of Toptul, is more soft than the 72 gear mechanism.

Interesting map. :)

Walmart

Passed by the gun department on the way to tool section and noticed they now carry Bushmaster M4 clones. :) Used to they didn't carry assault weapons as they wanted to be PC.

The tool section has a lot of Harbor Freight type tools(I'm 100% certain some of the screwdrivers are the same...) but theres the occasional worthwile item if you look close enough.

Yes it is. J.360 ROTATOR RATCHET STANLEY FACOM

I haven't had a chance to use it yet in real life, but I could've used it last week when removing the windshield washer fluid tank from my Honda.

It is much smoother than the cheaper Stanly branded version and works while rotating the handle in either direction. I had my doubts about it but it will definitely come in handy at times.

Interesting to know that the Facom branded one is smoother. I wish I can compare the two....
I have the Stanley branded one and it came to use several times in an automotive setting. Pretty handy if you don't have air tools to use.
The only complaints are that it's too bulky of a head, heavy, and the grip handle is too slippery.

I think it's the other way around. As I have heard when having contact with Brazilian companies though work, Brazil is very keen on having stuff made in Brazil. To achieve that, they have very high import tax. This leads to that in order to sell stuff cheap, you must produce it in the country. So it's probably a case of someone having got a production line from Taiwan going in Brazil.

Volkswagen has done the same, shipping old production lines to Brazil in order to be competitive on the market.

Interesting.

I don't know if those Taiwanese manufacturers have any patents issued for those designs, but perhaps Tramontina is using those designs under license? I dunno. Otherwise, they probably have committed patent infringement. :dunno:

More Bahco tools;

Double ring wrenches, or "Bahco PS"
I was able to collect compleat set this old (better?) desing.
attachment.php

btw;
Does folks know why so odd name for Swedish comppany "Bahco"?
Berndt August Hjorth & CO

Or

Bahco
8mm - 9mm wrench here in picture has this old name on it, but "Bahco" text on other side.

Very cool find!
And thanks explaining the origins of the "Bahco" name. :thumbup:

@magnusk750 : Didn't know Bahco made such nice forged wrenches, almost looks like Asahi's products:thumbup:

Automatique,

You're right, the basic form is very similar to the Asahi! It almost seems like those vintage Bahco's were the source of inspiration.

Nice collection of stuff there. I like the PB Swiss screwdriver. You must be so anxious to strike the end of that handle with a hammer? :D ;)

@Monte,

Thanks for all the answers and opinions about the angle grinder questions I had a few pages back. I've learned quite a bit about angle grinders lately. Thanks.

So what did I get?

....nice tools :) !
didn´t know that Stahlwille changed their finish ! You really like Wera huh ?? :)

not mine yet:) I hope someone could help me choose the right one. Could you spot the defference :confused:

Any recommendations are more than welcome, I'm in search for general purpose grinder able to process different material like ceramic tiles, iNOX etc.

thanks in advance.

Metabo has something like that now too (WE 14-125 Inox Plus) The tools are very similar so i think it´s a matter of taste which one to take. For general use i would recommend something with 10 or 11.000 RPM though. Better for cutting and grinding "normal" material. The best would be to check them out in a store to "feel" them. They´re all "Made in Germany" so you can´t go wrong with any of them :D

That reminds me...

In Germany, it's often not called a "Winkelschleifer" (angle grinder), it's called a "Flex" :D

Some people don´t even know what a "Winkelschleifer" is ...they only know a "Flex" :lol:

I found a camera recently and got my card reader to work so I took some pics at Lowes and Walmart.

Thanks for the pics !!!
Interesting to see german brands like LED-Lenser + Bessey in such a store so far away from home :)

@americanlockpicker:

Cool pics. I am very interested in getting one of those Bosch jigsaws. Once I sell my Hitachi one (which has been a bit of a disappointment with the blades pulling out during use and the cheesy plastic guide) I'm looking to get one of those Bosch ones. I do have to give some thought as to which handle style I prefer. I am learning towards the barrel grip version though. It's nice to see at least those are still made in Switzerland. Based on the reviews I have read and such, Bosch still makes the best jigsaws on the market.. at least of all those which are priced reasonably anyway.

Oh yeah and FYI sears has better prices on Knipex than Lowes.
