My local Masters were all stocking the Knipex set for $128. I bought the top nws set for $60. If I could have got the Knipex for $56 I would have bought it, as I prefer the jaws on the Cobra over the thinner but more aggressive nws jaws. The nws linesman and side cutter pliers are excellent though, so really I have got the value for my money there :lol_hitti

By comparison for the benefit of the americans here a single pair of ChannelLock linesmans costs around $70. So either the Knipex or nws are a bargain :shocking:

Or one of the online German stores I source from:

03 02 200 12.88 , 10.82 eur ex VAT
87 02 250 20.00 , 16.87 eur ex VAT
74 02 200 19.93, 16.75 eur ex VAT

If it's for paint removal your best bet is to boil the parts in TSP. It'll take care of all the grime and grease as well. Paint removal during electrolysis relies mostly on the mechanical action of the evolved hydrogen, so you'll have to use high current densities.

Top job on the stands and the grinders

Outstanding tip, thanks! Now where can I find TSP in the UK (I see I can get it off of ebay, but do any of the shops tend to carry it?).

What ratio of TSP/water is recommended?

I'm now also on the lookout for a very large pot and a hot plate

You can get TSP in larger quantities from Mistral. Don't know of any shops that still carry it - it's said to be not very green. Try to stay away from the chlorinated version, it seems to be less effective.
I use about a pound per 1 - 1/2 gallons of water. Keep it as hot as you can, the paint and grime will just fall off. Really stubborn spots may need some persuasion from a stiff nylon brush, or your pressure washer.
You can drain off the muck and take it to your local tip - lead paint and all that. And please, do this outside. :D
I blow dry the parts with shop air - or use a heat gun on it's lowest setting.
If I can't immediately paint the parts I brush them with something similar to Kurust.

Brilliant thanks! Does it have any effect on rust? Tried it on Al parts?

and now for something a bit different: my first Flex power tool! :D

it's brand new as in "never used to work on stuff before" but it has been handled by people and sat lonely in a store until said store did go under...

lucky us! a one hundred euros bill netted us this fine L 1506 VR(variable speed, yay!:willy_nil) along with a ceramic cutting diamond disc. no box but for the price she did not object to the purchase! :lol_hitti

it is, of course, made in Germany, easy to control and has almost no vibration(unlike our other grinder, a Bosch GWS 14-125 CI that is way too fast and powerful for doing some works).

2013-06-24-1156.jpg

anyway, for the measly price paid we're going to splurge on some add-ons and discs: the Flex anti-vibe grip with integrated pin wrench will be the first and then some nifty flap discs from its home country(thnaks Monte for the links!)

It wont remove rust per se, though some of the free phosphates may combine with rust to form ferric phosphate - just don't bank on it for rust protection. I just dip the parts in a phosphoric acid solution , then treat them with my version of Kurust or use electrolysis if there is rust on them.
I've done some aluminium parts, but these weren't left in for very long. The solution is caustic so I'd think that parts left in for extended periods may get affected. Don't use this for MAZAC/ZAMAC, pot metal or other zinc-rich alloys.

Great info again thanks. I've ordered TSP, I have a gas camp stove for heat - now just looking for a suitably sized container to use. Watch this space :rocker:

Large size gastronorm trays can be had pretty cheap used from caterers or self-serve restaurants.

:bounce: but boring in a nice way....nice to see odd danish tools, that i didn´t even know existed...http://www.jbf.dk

yes, looks like Denmark is full of small fishes making great products like the folks at JWL producing the Air Boy blowgun that was already shown here a few times.

i was quite pleased to find this scrapper for 5.00€(+1.00€ for the pack of blades :D). it was way cheaper than the others products(including continental chinese crappy floppy scrappers) i looked at and it works like a charm for it's intended purpose: no scratches and no marks...

gotta find myself the beefier one for floor tiles now! :)

anyway, Denmark, twelve points!

My turn... :)

More on the way... just waiting for it to ship. The torx plus driver seems like it'll last a decade with proper use. Also, notice the mashed up screws in that face mill.. that's the other idiots here using regular torx for it

edit: I do not endorse the use of tobacco products! :)

rule of thumb:
iron dissolves in acid, aluminium dissolves in alkaline (i.e 'caustic' e.g. sodium hydroxide NaOH)

Flat Coke... is a source of dilute phosphoric acid

I notice the face mill and i´d like to ask if you're an CNC Operator? Where are you locate? USA? Do you bring your own tools to work or your employer provide the tools to you? Is this a Mitsubishi Face Mill?
Lots of questions...

It's quite alright. I do operate CNC machinery, so you're right so far :) I work at a testing facility in PA (US). We get parts from all kinds of things... plane rudders, turbine blades, mortar barrels, axles, train wheels, boilers, that kind of stuff. Heck, we just got some V8 engine blocks from General Motors (Everyone thinks they're from the Corvette). We make different sized test pieces and them subject them to corrosion, heat, and for a lot of them we break them in half.. to see how strong it is. Which of course ruins my beautiful work

My employer does provide tools.. all of the necessary ones. But I bring a lot of my own stuff to make the day go easier (most of the tools they provide are cheap or minimal).

We don't have any Mitsubishi tooling at the moment, I think. That particular face mill is a 3" Iscar. We mostly use the Iscars because the inserts last. Most of the stuff we cut is Inconel, monel, waspalloy, hastelloy, rene 80, aermet, etc. Very difficult machining.

Hope I explained everything pretty well :)

what's strange with Gedore's Magic promotions is that you can find the same product with either the plain black or the plain blue handle with the same reference and price on the shelves of the same shop... :headscrat

The only place I can find the Magic items are on the internet...

Does anybody know if these pliers are from the same manufacturer? They look exactly alike...

edit: nevermind. Going to buy the NWS (http://shop.nws-tools.de/index.php/de/schlauchklemmzange-clic-clac.html). Cheaper and they look like they're of a much higher quality.

Lok... in the first picture the bit is out of the socket. Believe it or not, I can't pull the bits out the sockets with my hands. Extremely secure... You use a punch and mallet to take the bits out and hammer the bits in. I don't know how they made it work so well...

Yes you 're right. Thanks man.

Wiha yankee screwdriver

Monte this is awesome. I want one. :)

they're from the "Magic" promo, handled a couple of them in .lu last time i was there...

The U-2 with the all blue handle was in the magic of 2012.

The 2013 magic catalog has the U-10 alu (aluminum) with the blue black handle.

Some tools that I bought for a few bucks.

The hmm, (speed handle???) is Giller. I now nothing about it, any info? Is it from the old world? It has only Giller 62R. Looks very good though.

I think a reseda green Monte Carlo would be very appropriate :) I think you should modify some spanners for the door handles and perhaps a Wiha handle for the shifter as well :3gears:
yeah good idea :D:scared:

I'd love a sand blast cabinet, but then I'd need a compressor of course. I'd love one of those too, but it's not likely to happen before I get all the current projects done. I do want to give the electrolysis a go though, so the Leinen might be a good excuse.
a compressor is a must have ;)

seen from across the border it looks, you know, almost the same... :D
...but since Germany don´t spend much money for military anymore... or spend money for things which don´t work like our drones you don´t have to worry much ;) since our new tanks look like this anyway ;)

are the Wiha bits compatible with the old Yankee ones?
yes the Wiha drill screwdriver uses 7mm yankee bits (with a "notch" and "step")

http://www.fine-tools.com/yankeescrewdriverbit.html

They do produce modern versions which take 1/4" bits ....
there is also a adaptor available:

Congratulations !!! Good decision !!!
and then some nifty flap discs from its home country(thnaks Monte for the links!)
...not all manufacturers were listed iirc there are even more choices like www.bibielle.com

french brushes, so booooooooooring...
I like them :)

a beautiful, old school, Martor-Curvex echoing the Noga posted a few hours ago... :D
AWESOME !!!

gotta find myself the beefier one for floor tiles now! :)
beefier ? :)

Hey Monte, what do you think of the Original Fix mig pliers? Did you find them fit for the task? Any chance of a Youtube review?
honestly I don´t really use the tool... to remove the nozzle I use my hands, to clean the nozzle I use this tool and to remove the other parts of the torch I use this wrench.

Monte this is awesome. I want one. :)
