The tip is very nice, durable, but the handle is poor quality. I think you can find Wiha or Facom with the same price or so...

Thank you for advice. Hard choice between Facom and Wiha, also I can add Witte too in the league because of ergonomic handles
Mostly I found old stock from Mundial screwdrivers that with hard handles and stamps with Italy on them.

It's for sure not premium like the big German brands, but I think the price/quality-ratio of these taiwanese brands like Kraftwerk (Swiss, but production in Asia) and Amprotools is pretty good and sufficient for a non-professional user. Nevertheless the additional tools I'm buying at the moment are from Hazet, Gedore, Knipex and Wera (and Bosch). So absolutely believe in the German tools!
Still curious if these Taiwanese brands were every tested in a publication against the famous brands.

OK, the promised old (too bad they don't mention the year of manufacturing on their tools) Fein electric tools fitted in this old Schaefer toolbox:

 I really like that Schaefer box...

You could add "Felo Ergonic" to your possible choice...Made in Germany, nice ergonomic handles and better prices than Wiha (at my local dealer anyway...).

Unfortunately only 1 cheap Taiwanese brand and no Kraftwerk or Amprotools. Doesn't say much about the more expensive tools from Taiwan (A lot of Facom is also produced in Taiwan I read way back on page 137).
But thanks anyway ;)

Well, not really. It seems that this magazine does not list country of origin. Instead, it lists the country where the importer is registered. For example, PROXXON is an importer carrying 100% Taiwanese goods, yet they put "Deutschland" as COO. Müllner is also an importer, not a manufacturer. A lot of Stanley is made in Taiwan, yet they list USA as COO for that particular wrench (I see no "USA" stamp anywhere on that wrench).

The thing with Germany, anyone can register a company here. Let's say it's "Friedrich GmbH". Now they can legally stamp "Friedrich GmbH, Germany" on every tool they sell. Not "made in Germany", but "company name, Germany".

This went one step further just recently. As most folks realized that "Germany" without "made in" can be China or Taiwan, importers invented a beautiful thing. I have a salad bowl here in my kitchen that says "design MADE IN GERMANY". Literally. Just like that. Where do you think that one is made? :)

Designed in Germany and produced in Asia probably? :D

Thanks for your reply. Still an interesting discussion, because even if the brand is German, more and more brands move to Asia and other countries for their production proces. Question then is, if this always is a bad thing. When the same knowledge, production machines and materials are transfered to a foreign country, the quality of the end product CAN still be on the same (high) level. It's hard to estimate for a consumer if this is the case. :eyecrazy:

I have a set of Wiha pliers that are made in Vietnam. They are a bit tight, meaning they won't open easily with just one hand. Not like the "Professional" series that were, until recently, made in Germany (Knipex rebrand?) Now the production of Wiha Professional series pliers seems to be moved to Vietnam as well. I don't think I like it. However, Wiha does not print "Wiha Germany" on these pliers. It's either WIHA or WIHA.COM, whereas their German or Swiss made pliers state their COO very prominently.

Proxxon should be from Taiwan/China too.
Kraftwerk and AmPro are not really common over here... too many competitors i guess...(Proxxon, KS-Tools, BGS, Condor....)

Some new stuff I got from Amazon.de. The Bessey lever clamps are now my favourite, they're lighter than comparable 6" C clamps, quick to clamp and has amazing clamping pressure.

At our company we have a Taiwanese supplier for identical ratchet lever clamps and they told us they have the patent for the design! (They've got a price to match)
They work great, by the way.
But these Bessey clamps are clearly marked as made in Germany.
I think our supplier might be pulling a fast one on us. :headscrat

Either that, or Bessey is paying royalties to the patent holder?

I checked and Bessey has some patents for clamps, but not for ones with this type of design.

Who knows...only thing for sure is there's many imitators e.g. http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-forged-quick-lever-clamp

I was not sure how the Bessey lever-clamp work...

Here's a video review of the Bessey lever clamps:

And a write up from the same guys: http://www.newmetalworker.com/reviews/bsylvrclmps.html

I know this is German made tools, but how is the quality? Our local nationwide chain store Autozone sells these, but they seem to be labeled as "cheapish" tools.

For here (Costa Rica) is a common hardware stores brand. I'm not sure if this brand comes from Taiwan or China (or another country in Asia), but definitely comes from one of those latitudes
