made my choice..

its 3 am friday night.. im online.. paypal ready..

normally i would say that is one of worst times to buy anything.. one makes bad choices at this hour. hjahah. midnite-shoppin is often bad idea.

anyways i ordered a small HAZET ratchet and socket set. 3/8" version.

specifically Hazet 880N-1. its got 10mm-15mm, +17, 19, 21 and 22mm sockets.

paid about 170$ for it. now i just have to anxiously wait for it to come from germany. late next week hopefully.

------
still thinking of the other sets, undecided what to get.
You won't be disappointed. I use my 3/8" Hazet set the most. Offcourse a 1/4" and 1/2" set is also nice for smaller and bigger jobs (depending on the type of work you use it for). And the 450N wrenches are the strongest you can buy, so that's also a musthave :rocker:

Got a new Gedore 1/2" ratchet of eBay for a lot less than the normal price, very low backdrag 60 tooth quick release ratchet. Got far too many 1/2" standard length ratchets already but these are especially nice to use.
very nice ratchet !

So. damn.. i did eff it up. i wanted to have more teeth in the ratchet. i actually thought they all had more than 30 by now. FFFF +uk!

oh well.. i will give the ratchet to my dad if i dont like it myself. (he is old skool, he prefers the lower teeth models.. more firm click he says.) the rest of the set, like sockets i will keep myself. (just get a finer tooth ratchet to fill in.)

edit: i did send an email to vendor just now, in hope they have not shipped it yet so i might be able to cancel the order and get my money back.. and order a set with 72 teeth ratchet or something like that.

ps.. thank you superautobacs for letting me know of this issue.

------

other sets.. i want/need to see this hazet to arrive before deciding on others.

I've got those same feeler gauges :)

pozidriv,

Nice haul on the sockets and the oil can!

The Gedore and Stahlwille sockets have modern, recognizable stamping and knurling near the drive end.

However, the Snap-on and Britool have unrecognizable stamping with old font and weak knurling near the drive end.

Does anyone here can approximately date the Snap-on and/or the Britool sockets?

Thanks.

Dave
I would be interested to know as well. The stamping on the Britool is almost illegible:

Hazet 163-98/17 combination wrench set in safety-insert-system

Today we finished workbench with pegboard, made from Croatian oak:D

I need to organize pegboard for spanners, pliers, screwdrivers...

Are you happy with these wrenches and where did you get these from ?

Very nice - my favourite pliers of all time!

They were introduced, if memory serves, in the early 80's. They featured a futuristic design, orange/red grips (rather than the usual Elliott Lucas dark red) and a gun blue finish!

Unfortunately, as is so often the case with tools, you don't realise how good they are till you've used them for a couple of decades! In this case they were superb! I still have my 7 inch combination pliers but the matching snipe nose were thieved years back!

Maybe the design was too revolutionary for the average Elliott Lucas customer, or maybe the tool shops of the time wouldn't buy 'em, but they were discontinued after a short time!

Sadly, new old stock seems to surface only rarely, and when it does it's usually the small models that had been bought for the electrical industry!

i never used a Fein polisher, I´m sure they´re high quality but i got a good price for the Flex :) If i would choose a Fein i would take a 1200 Watt model. I don´t know if 800 Watt is sufficient. They have a double gear reduction though, so they should be powerful. You can´t go wrong with Fein :)
btw. also available from Wurth :)

Found some sort of automatic screwdriver, probably superseded by magnetic bits and drills/drivers that stop when trigger released, tho did work well when i had to drive in some big screws using the wolf drill:p

just push a screw into the bit inside and the balls hold it in place and retract when pushed back while screwing in and lifting the bit off the screw at a set depth, luckily found additional bits at a separate location, couldn't find much online about it apart from a court case where the patent was applied for in 81 and lost in 91 due to other companies having similar things i think.

That's a pretty old Britool socket!

My Dad bought a new 1/2 inch drive set in, we think, the mid 1960's! All the sockets in that set are of the slightly later pattern, which feature a similar logo but smaller and deeper!

When you get back to the 50's, a lot of the tools feature that logo with a very grey coloured chroming. I can't really see, but it may be one of those! Before that they were just parkerised, until you go back to pre war, which were different!

So, we can say for sure it date's from before the mid 60's, but post the 'black' tools of the immediate post war era!

That's some great information, Dave, thank you! I'm amazed you're able to pinpoint this socket based on those ****** photos, there's a real wealth of knowledge on this forum!

I'll probably pass by that surplus store again later this month. These ones came from a huge bin and I didn't have the time to delve into it too much.

Thanks again, I'll consider this old sucker's age, next time I'm using it on some rusty, equally-old bolt. I'll be gentle :)

Always worth having a rummage around the surplus bins!

The Britool sockets didn't change a great deal over the years. The 'classic' era tools from the 60's to mid 70's are generally considered best, and you can recognise those by bright chrome and a similar, but smaller logo! The accessories of that era had all steel handles and the sets were packed in heavy boxes with a red crackle paint!

From the mid 70's (the James Neil era) the accessories were cheapened a little, but the sockets were still very good. The logo was switched to 'BRITOOL' with even height characters and metric sockets had 2 rows of knurling to distinguish them from the rest! This pattern stayed till things went downhill in the 90's!

The earlier stuff is fine to use too, just be careful you pick up stuff with a square drive, not a hex drive!! The sockets all seem to have been really well made, and generally outlast the ratchets they were supplied with! An old Britool set, with a replacement Snap On ratchet is a common sight in the U.K.

I need to get a better picture but the one on the right is Brittool in imperial and made in England. I believe it is a good one.

The mini pliers of Draper I bought a couple of few years ago are starting to rust pretty much, so I not happy with the quality.
Ok, It's a budget brand, but this was not what I expected so fast. There are stored in a dry garage of a wall, so the conditions are pretth good.

Does Draper make any stuff in the U.K. anymore ?
Screwdrivers and ratcheting screwdrivers in particular.

Don't believe Draper have EVER made stuff themselves! They were, I seem to recall, a surplus dealer years back, but are now basically an importer!

I've seen some British made stuff in their packing, PCL stuff I think, but most of it is Taiwanese!

Have the same issues with non chromed Knipex pliers but it;s more or less normal when the protective chrome layer is missing.

I'm not aware of anything apart from the pcl stuff.
There were rebranded Knipex pliers and I have a set of Austrian drill bits that I have had for 20 years. It is really a matter of checking individual items, a few are good.
I have their expert socket sets, in 3/8" and 1/2" and they are ok for the money.
