Good day all,

I have had hard time to find an inspection lamp. Eventually I ordered a Sealey professional online but it feels cheap sh@.
Do you think i could find a similar one but better quality? I prefer one without the wire shield on the front because it is annoying when light project the shadow of it.

Then there are some led floor lights, what do you recommend?

Thanks!

Have a look on ebay for a Briticent Gripper, I prefer the older wire models but the plastic ones would be better if shadows are a problem.

They don't ship to the US :(

And you'd be surprised, if someone were willing to deal with the freight, it would be cheaper for me to buy a Compac floor jack from Germany and pay to ship it than to buy one from a dealer here (no VAT, strong USD to Euro right now, US distribution has huge markups).

Europe retail is standaard 3,3 production to wholesale and 2,4 wholesale to retail.

Arrived today. Compac CAX 2H. A 2 ton stand 43cm to 74cm. weigh 5.8 Kg on my scales. I probably wouldn't put the full weight of a car on the maximum elevation, no higher than in the photo. I've got some bigger 6 ton high-lift for that.

The pin locks in position securely and the feet are fully welded, not tack welded. They are date stamped 10/2015

In the background the Compac front bogie wheels. These are a major construction at 7 Kg a pair.

Compac price these per stand. I paid 39 euro each. It may be cheaper to buy a pair from the 3 German companies who also brand them. (See earlier posts)

Make that 4 other German companies ! Longus GmbH sell the range.
None of them though sell the equivalent of the Compac 2H which are much heavier than the 1.5 ton models.

To give you an idea, Chinese made Esco stands which are similar but don't go as high and are made in China cost about $66 each in the USA, before any tax. If someone did import those Compac stands to the US, they would probably charge at least $100 each + tax (as opposed to the 39 euros which is $42.57 they cost before VAT in Europe).

I'm interested in the Knipex Cobra 125 mm in BLUE. Apparently it's only available at gerschwitz.net since they listed it on eBay.de. They don't ship to Australia, know anyone that has stock and can ship to me?

By the way, anything else from Knipex that comes in this colour scheme? Thanks.

I don't understand your post

I have worked in IT for Large retailers for a few years now so its second nature. I Will try to explain.

When an item is produced the production cost is added to the cost of transport to the manufactorers warehouse.

This is the base cost of the item for the manufacturer. Commonly called landed cost of goods. If sold at this price a loss is made as overhead costs such as head office administration are not include.

Landed cost is multiplied by 3.3 to give wholesale price. This is the price at which the manufacturer sells the goods to their distributors, stores, etc.

Wholesale price is multiplied by 2.4 to give recommended retail price. This is what the consumer pays for the item at full price.

Example:

Gedore makes a ratchet. It costs 8 euro to produce. Shipping to their central warehouse is 2 euro.

Landed cost = 10 euro.

Gedore wil sell this ratchet to wholesale stores for 33 euro ex vat. Wholesale price. ( ex vat)

The recommended retail price will be 79,95 (actually 79.2) but everyone likes round numbers.

Please keep in mind overhead costs must still be deducted but this gives an indication of profit margins.

3,3 and 2,4 are currently industry standard in European fashion. Other industries may vary a little but I have rarely seen lower that 3 and 2 respectively.

This model guarantees profitability for both the producer and their wholesaler given each carefully watches their overhead and of course turns over a decent volume of goods.

Is there any dealer for those Compac stands (or the same thing with whatever branding) who will ship to the USA?
Did you contact the various US dealers of Compac, AC Hydraulic or Weber ...?

Out of my curiosity, who makes screwdrivers for Stahlwille?
Witte

I have price lists from Bosch and Baier power tools which show a margin between 10 and 20% for the retailer.

It would appear AC did make their own stands at one point. They probably realised it would make more sense to make something like this in a relatively low wage economy (for manual workers) like Germany.

Those are some boogery welds.

You'd think after assembling 300 of these a day the welder would smooth out a bit.

I could be wrong, but I believe Ultimate Garage, who is a member here, is the reason the Esco stands are just like the old AC stand, and it was because AC stopped making it and as he was their distributor at the time in the US they let him work on sourcing them from somewhere else (I could have botched this a bit, it's posted about somewhere in these forums though).

There is only one AC dealer in the US, the distributor, and they don't bring the stands. The Compac distributor doesn't bring the stands either.
The only US company that has any association with Weber is Hyco, and generally speaking they have no interest in selling to the public. I'll have to call and see.

Yes, sometimes you will see dealer price lists that show such low margins but it would be pretty darn hard to keep a retail business open, especially a brick & mortar retail location, on 20% margin unless you were doing a huge turnover. Distributors and manufacturers often provide large percentage rebates to dealers that move high volumes of product. That way, dealers have an incentive to sell more. Internet sales have turned a lot of things upside down and as specialty local retailers have scaled back over the years, sometimes the only place to get specialty items is from online sellers or pay very high prices to the few remaining brick & mortar retailers.

There are a few notable exceptions:

Aldi and Lidl use very low markups due to high volume and big buy models.

Where drop shipments, concession, or franchise models are used the margin wil also be lower. This because the inventory and legal responsibility (returns and warranty) remain the responsibility of the supplier. The dealer just takes the kickback with no risk.

Finally electronics. TV's computers gadgets sit around the 20% marker. Largely due to high competition and price pressure from cheap made in China.

If you follow my model you will see that a saving of five euros in production makes an enormous difference in retail price. There is a finite limit on what a consumer will spend more on a better product.

A five hundred euro festool power tool may only cost 30-50 more in production than a well made in China Bosch. The retail ( recommended) price however differs much more.

Also keep in mind a factor 2,4 is not 240%. It's actually 58%. The maximum possible profit being 58% of the total price.

Lastly the wholesale to retail margin is including vat. In my previous example 30 euro wholesale ex vat = 79.95 inc vat.

Deduct you average European vat of 20% from 58% and suddenly we are getting a lot closer to montes numbers. Especially considering its electronics. Store overhead could easily be another 20%.

So I guess it's also how the supplier calculates the achievable margin and sells this to their dealer. I know my employer has a 2,4 guarantee to its dealers but in reality you'd never make that.

Bricks and mortar is a truly difficult way to make money nowadays. Overhead is high and web competition is killer.

Many suppliers are realizing they can make far more by cutting out the middle man and selling through their own website.

Often customer service is outsourced to Eastern Europe or even India.

Not saying I like it (not one bit) but it is the way things are going.

Who would of thought the world of stands is so arcane....

I'm middle aged but in retrospect, instead of messing about with Chinese death stands, my parents should have bought me a set of British made Melco stands, in large and small sizes, on my 16th birthday. They last a lifetime.

Knurling? That's all they could come up with?

Asahi has a neat set that I've been meaning to import. They offset one hex arm 30 degrees from the other, which lets you operate in tight spaces with half the required swing angle.
