Gentlemen:

I am looking for new metal lathe (in Europe hopefully) - something that can take 4-500mm in diameter and 1000-1500mm between centers. This lathe will spend it's days in shop that repairs agricultural/construction/earthmoving equipment. Perhaps they don't need high precision but I know they need rather strong lathe. Before you know it they will be turning down some heavy nasty stuff with it. So a stable heavy lathe would be preferred - not some hobby stuff.

Needless to say price is always an issue.

Suggestions?

I read it later in this evening in my new betabook after placing my question.

I think COO may differ depending on the "line" there's "easy line " (PRC) or the other more expensive. For the price I for one would buy something else , even the PRC line is not exactly friendly priced

The slightly used lathe offers on the interweb is so great it's no reason one should ever buy a brand new one.
I'm not a machinist myself but had a lathe that my uncle ran for me a few years back , It was a Toss similar to what you want 1500 between centers , height a bit less 350 .

What I can tell you is buy second hand and buy the biggest you can transport and has nice tooling , tooling will cost more than the lathe if you don't have it .

CASTIGLIONE D'ADDA – i dont know what they produce???

That looks like office building to me rather than a tool plant. I've heard Beta has a strong push to sell tools in China, maybe this company has something to do with it?

To me, after looking at maybe 100+ individual Beta tools, it looks like Beta sockets and ratchets are made in Italy, Japan and Taiwan. Didn't spot any made in China yet.

Their combination wrenches seem to be made in Italy, Germany, China (non sparking ones). Ratcheting wrenches are made in Taiwan. And some of their toolboxes are made in China. Probably other stuff too but don't want to spend more time to find out. They do have tens of thousands of tools, no time for that. ;)

Like somebody said, the COO must be listed when selling stuff in USA. So, instead of quessing or speculating I took a look at this site. I assume they have no motive to lie about it.

Hello all,

What do you think about the welding machines from Javac? I have seen some good prices for a small one , the TopMig 165C.

Thanks!

Hi Olafur

I would definitely be looking at a second hand machine!

New machines of that size are expensive, but they don't hold their value the same way as something that will fit in a shed!

Loads of makes to choose from here in the U.K. but I'd probably be looking at something like a Colchester. Good solid machines, and I sold one a few years back, more than big enough for your needs, with two decent chucks, faceplate and tools, good working order, for £1400!

Colchesters are common so parts are easy, and you have manufacturers support if you need it!

Years ago you could get big machines really cheap, but now, below a certain value the Chinese buy everything! There's still good value stuff out there though!

Nice video Monte.

But where do you buy Dolex gripping pliers in Germany? They seem to be a less expensive alternative to Facom.

I tried to buy some from here (I placed an order over a year ago but nothing happened and they did not reply to my emails; at least they did not charge me with anything).

I´ve not yet found any stores here selling them....Maybe buy them in France ?
https://www.mabeo-direct.com/A-528615-dolex-pince-etau-bc_220

Monte, it made in Germany ?
I guess not :) Maybe Taiwan.
Fein Multimaster 14v vs 18

Bearing in mind that the 14v batteries are 4Ah and the 18v are 2.5Ah, would that make any difference on the power and/ or duration?

Also, am I correct to assume that 18v batteries with higher capacity would fit on the Multimaster?

Many thanks
The new Multimaster is only available in 18 volt. 14 volt is a dead system

Grade F test: shoot a 6mm steel ball, 0.86g at 45 metres per second directly in lens

Grade B test:shoot a 6mm steel ball, 0.86g at 120 metres per second

The only differs is in speed impact

looks like a bunch of my tools :)

sans the nws I dislike

I think the NWS cutters are great, but I don't like the combination pliers. Between them, knipex and vbw, my favourite are vbw by far.

The real gems are Swiss made wiha if you can find them!

The Dolex pliers are made by Dolex (formerly Outillage Roux) and the Facom pliers are made by Facom.

The Knipex drivers are "Made in EU" iirc

Uvex - Made in Germany :)

First production run of the S.161B was in France....future runs likely in Italy

Did they do away with the cover plate (palm control) on those?

They look nice and minimalist, glad to seem them keeping the basic design.

Correction..........made in Italy. These were probably sent to France for packaging for the first production run. Ratchet clearly says Italy on the handle.
s161b-italy.jpg

These are no longer palm control. The rear knurled disk for for direction change only.

s161b2.jpg

The ratchet is 15% lighter than the previous S.161 and the head is 10% more compact. They are also rebuildable (unlike the Taiwanese rotator & pear head ratchets...SL.161/SL.171/S.360) .

Anyone use the Knipex crimping pliers (for RJ45)? People tend to recommend the Klein over here, but there are very few Knipex pliers I've used that I don't like.
