Good tips Monte, thanks. Any other suggestions at a similar price point? I'm mainly interested in the large grinder, but as I'd burned up (literally, it caught fire) my smaller Metabo while cutting concrete I thought I might replace it as well with this bundle.
Similar price point ? 2 angle grinders for the price of 1 ? :D;)
I dunno but here are some suggestions: :)
Metabo: large angle grinders are still made here
Bosch: certain models are still made here. I think the ones in this design.
Fein: all made here.
Kress: imported
Flex: imported.
The last german "Red Bär" models were these here:
winkelschleifer-flex-l-3206-cd-230-cee-5661.jpg

Hilti: models in the past were german made (Bosch...?). Don´t know about the recent ones....
old ones:

I see quite a few Compacs lurking in the corner of garages here in the UK.
In Australia the importer has chosen red instead of the traditional hammered green finish and the current green/ black
red looks good too !!
Oh no, another great company will be going down that road... I am wondering what will happen in a few years. Would it be any good tools for professionals or we all get the chinesium disposable ones?
At least everything will be cheaper :D
Make sure you get the made in Germany one!
yes ! :D;)
8)Is there is a Turkish or Spannish maker that Monte might know about ?
Turkish: Kanca

Spanish: Snap-On through their spanish subsidiaries:

I've got a fabricated vice I bought in Austria at the very interesting tool store chain called Zgonc (I always called it 'zonk' which drove my missus mad, pronounced something like 'skonts'). For the Aussies it was a bit like Total Tools, a mix of china shite and good stuff too. They stocked a fair range of German/Austrian tools, and I bought that vice quite cheaply and without much expectation. It is made in Germany by Küpper and although it doesn't look like much it works far better than I expected... it is really great! Here's one on amazon uk:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005SCZQT0/?tag=atomicindustr-21

I can imagine that the more upmarket forged versions of these style vices would be very good indeed.
It's interesting when you travel and see the different way other countries go about achieving the same result. Vices all looked kind of crappy to my eyes compared with a good old Aussie Dawn, but they obviously work well. Likewise I was fascinated that you almost never see a ball pein hammer in Germany/Austria, they use one which is tapered to a straight line at the 'ball' end. There's a name for them, but you almost never see them around in Australia.

Kampmann (East German) 1/2" drive socket set that has lived in my tractor for years. Cost someone ‎£4-17-6 (Australia went decimal in 1966...). The very mediocre ratchet and swivel-ended driver didn't stand up to the abuse of loosening wheel lug nuts so have been replaced by Australian-made Sidchrome. The sockets are quite good quality and nicely engraved with AF and equivalent metric sizes, "Kampmann" and the Kampmann logo.

Apparently F.W. Kampmann was established in Schmalkalden, Thuringia, at the start of the 20th century, became a VEB during the GDR, and successfully navigated the transition to free enterprise by factory engineer Hans-Günter Messerschmidt as MHG Messerschmidt Gmbh: https://www.mhg-tools.de/

Schmalkalda and Kampmann seem to have been allied because their wrenches look very similar.

Price of used Hazet tools on Ebay is crazy. Sometimes being sold as parts from VW/Porsche/Merc tool kits. Not sure how this is verified as there does not look to be any special markings on the tools. I checked sold listings from UK and US and people are paying these prices.

Blue handled screwdrivers claimed to be from this set are priced at £80-90 each.

Just in case the seller for any of these items uses this forum. I would charge the same price if there is demand for it too.

Thanks for that. I added Kupper to my vise makers list post above.
They say 'made in Germany'
The non-forged models are pretty cheap so clearly built with economy in mind.

Cheers, I've ordered the Metabo W22-230MVT for £115 delivered (tomorrow allegedly), so a reasonable price, though no case. Apparently made in Germany:

MET-W22-230MVT-4.jpg

Good choice, I can see the 'made in Germany' tag enlarging the photo  Make sure you ordered the 240v or 110v variant as required.

Have you noticed a general shift from Tanos to Sortimo?

I think you are going to see a lot more L-boxxes going forward.
I was at the Eissenwaremesse in Cologne last month and Bosch and Sortimo launched a joint venture call BS-Systems to produce and market nothing else but various types of L-boxes.

With regards to coo and quality of tools I will give my experience from a small tool fair I attended in UK.

I have only a Metabo cordless drill and just bought the their cordless jig saw for obvious reasons.

I was looking on the new Metabo LXT made in Germany drills and I noticed that the batteries do not fit very well on the drill with much play. The same for the quick chucks with a lot of wobble and out of roundness, especially compared to Fein and Festool.

Not sure if the ownership from Hitachi has anything to do with this or other was just the models on exhibition.

The Fein on the other hand the felt more quality and their accessories fit very nicely like the Festool.

I have in mind to buy a couple more cordless tools but I will do so next time I am at the tool show.

It is really very important if you gonna invest some money to look and feel the tools from close, especially the cordless, as you may stuck on the platform!

I found very interesting how small and powerful is the Fein 12v drill and how light are the Festool for the the size.

Most tools were exhibited by Dewalt and Makita which I think they have a mix of both low and higher quality tools and you would need to spend much time researching prior to buying into their platform.

BTW, I am getting a message that GJ has disabled the media sharing so I cannot upload photos[emoji848]

Trying some more PB Swiss. Heavy Duty SwissGrip PH2 and Soft-grip ESD PH0. They really do feel a bit special.

Quick comparison of a Standard Precision PH0 and a Soft-Grip Precision PH0.

esd1.jpg

Surprised that the shanks/tips are very different sizes.

esd2.jpg

Also comparison to a Wiha ESD (Wiha ESD is the same handle design as the one in the pic but with a yellow handle tip). The PB Swiss is a bit longer with a wider grippier handle.

Thanks. This should be useful IMHO.

The one advantage Wiha has over PB Swiss is the large number of fastener types and sizes they offer (PB Swiss's profile range is rather limited).

Wiha car trim clip remover. As with other Wiha tools I have used it feels very solid and is probably up to daily use but isn't finished as well as you may hope for a premium brand. There are quite defined ridges where the two halves of the hard plastic handle have been stuck together which are very apparent on your palm when using the tool. The satin finish on the metal has ridges and blemishes.

All a bit bemusing. You can buy those circlip pliers new.

I recently sold some NOS Hazet pliers on ebay and there was zero interest from the UK. The eventual buyer was in Germany

Save up for one of these would be my advise...

Stahlwille open box 13 (9 piece) metric set. Bought new from an ebay seller in the Netherlands as it was the cheapest I could find them. Normally in the UK the set comes in a tool roll rather than a plastic case and has slightly different sizes.

UK set Contains: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 19 & 22mm.
Netherlands Set Contains: 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19mm.

Not sure if the set I bought is an older set or if Stahlwille offers different configurations to different countries.

Comparison between Stahlwille open box 13, Facom 440 and Stahlwille open box 14. The open box 14 has more compact but deeper open and box/ring ends compared to the open box 13. The Facom 440 has a pretty much flawless finish. The finish on both Stahlwille spanners is very good but does have some blemishes.

I have the 2018 and 2014 Stahlwille paper catalogue from Stahlwille UK. It's identical to the German one. They do 7 different sets of open box 14 wrenches but not the one you have, however the one you have has the important ISO size 18mm which BMW and others have switched to from the DIN 19mm sizes. Probably more info than you want but all you are missing is the 15mm found on some French cars !

The set posted is Open Box 13. Do the catalogs show his Open Box 13 set?

No not listed.

From time to time Stahlwille have special offer sets. I bought a large open box 14 set in a roll from TBS Aachen a while back for a low price and it wasn't a standard set.

Those of you with Metabo and facebook should check out their facebook group. I've posted a few of my concerns with their chinese tools (and potential bleedover with Hitachi tools) and got a private message asking for my phone number. Not sure if its a intimidating tactic or actually trying to discuss their tools, but they've yet to call since I gave them it.

As said before it would be good if you can see the tools before buying for many reasons.

In a tool fair I was attending I checked a few Metabo LTX cordless and there was a lot of play on the battery attachment and much of wobble on the quick chuck. I t did not affect the functioning of the tool though.

Pureleaf, I remember you saying that the Metabo service in US is not good. Contrary to your experience I sent a question to Metabo UK about the actual dimensions of the drill I wanted to buy and they replied with a detailed drawing. Haven't had the need to use their repair service though.

Hello all,

Could you recommend a good quality/ brand of valve cores for the car tyres with link if possible.

I have found no name, red ones without spring and Weldtite blue ones with spring, see pics below

Not sure if the original have a spring on top.

Thanks
