Servus, Monte,

I guess the hand measuring tools are now made by Preisser click (Look at 2007) And the wellenmesstechnik is still made by Mahr click

Thanks for your investigations. So Helios shouldn't be a bad choice but I'm even more tempted by Mitutoyo. The model with the friction thimble you own looks nice. Since I own a 0 to 25 and a 25 to 50 mm micrometer now I could need larger types (up to 100 mm) but unfortunately, digital models are hardly affordable for me.

BTW, I found no "Made in ..." on the Garant micrometers.

The micrometer i have has a "friction thimble" instead of a ratchet. It just slips. You also must consider hat if you dont measure 100% the exact same spot the result can vary and also if you dont hold the object you want to measure 100% straight every time results vary again.

I used the 25.000 mm "gauge block" (actually, it's not a block but I don't know the proper term) in order to play with the micrometers and test them. Would you be scared if the results don't vary more than (half of) the thickness of the marking line on the micrometer at max.?

here is more interesting info about the speed and force applied etc. : click

Thanks, this is a helpful document.

but now some sizes are missing :D (6,8,11,12,14,15mm...) :)

Not really, because I plan to get some Garant 614700 (long combination wrenches), Stahlwille No. 14 and Hazet 600N wrenches in addition.

:lol_hitti actually it was quite fun to work with the Bosch GSH 5 CE demolition hammer we rented. The tiles had no chance :)

You rented it? You're joking, aren't you? Sorry, but I would never have expected that you rent a tool instead of buying it.

Does anyone here have any Festools?

Indeed, I have several Festool tools. Is there anything specific you're interested in?

Regards,

Chreese

Here are some NWS pliers I received today:
NWS003.jpg

These are the PowerMax fittings pliers, and the "Peacemaker" ergo-grip pliers. These are my first NWS tools, and I'm pleased with them. I like the fittings pliers better than my Knipex pliers wrenches. I don't have any pliers like the Peacemaker to compare to, but I like the design. I like the fit, finish, and feel, and the high quality typical of German-made tools.

I wish this line was easier to get in the US. I ordered them from HIPA tools in Quebec, from Mr. Mark Seizer, whom I read about in one of Monte's posts. His customer service was really incredible, even though this was a very small order. The downside is that HIPA is not yet able to process credit cards, so they must have payment in advance, and the check clearing and shipping across the border took a while. But Mr. Seizer kept me informed so the wait didn't seem that long. He says they will be able to take online orders some time this spring.

Here's the HIPA contact info, posted with Mr. Seizer's consent:

@wolpi:
nice ! I like the old drill press!

@american lockpicker:
you might want to check out http://festoolownersgroup.com and www.talkfestool.com

@Attappmann
cool !!! nice pliers ! How do you like the handles of the "peacemaker" ? Why do you like the NWS pliers wrench better than the Knipex ?
ps: just ordered the "peacemaker" on tuesday !! :)

For the readers who are interested in NWS, here the link to their online catalog: click and the PDF catalog: click

Servus, Monte,
Thanks for your investigations.
BTW, I found no "Made in ..." on the Garant micrometers.

digital tools are not really necessary imho (for DIY), i only own the digital version because i got it for 20€. I guess all the lower priced micrometer are from eastern europe or China.... (except Mitutoyo which are low priced and still from Japan)

I used the 25.000 mm "gauge block" (actually, it's not a block but I don't know the proper term) in order to play with the micrometers and test them. Would you be scared if the results don't vary more than (half of) the thickness of the marking line on the micrometer at max.?

There will be always "messabweichungen"/measuring errors. A 0-25mm micrometer has a accuracy of +- 0,004mm. If you hold the mic with your warm hands there could be a difference. if you measure at 18 degree celsius, later at 25 there is a error, if you dont exactly read the scale at a 90 degree angle there will be a error (parallax error), dirt =error, the "measuring force" is a factor too. The ratchet of a mic engages at 5 to 10 Newton. Thats a big difference if the ratchet engages at 5 newton on the first measurement and 10 at the second - again measuring error...etc... So you would need to use a more accurate tool or do several measurements like 5 or 10 times and then you have a average.
You could use a micrometer not with 0,01 but with 0,001mm reading for more accuracy.

Not really, because I plan to get some Garant 614700 (long combination wrenches), Stahlwille No. 14 and Hazet 600N wrenches in addition.

ok , problem solved :D

You rented it? You're joking, aren't you? Sorry, but I would never have expected that you rent a tool instead of buying it.

lol :D i figured out that to buy a 724.- € Bosch demolition hammer while i only receive 200.- € for the help is no good idea :D Because i rather save the money to buy a "Duss" hammer the next time :D ;)

The Milwaukee tools here don`t say "made in....." on the sticker....
The hammer drills are the last tools made here (Winnenden/Germany). Before Techtronics took over the electric tool division from Atlas Copco (Milwaukee/AEG) almost all Atlas-Copco/AEG tools said "made in germany". The production then shifted to Nýřany/Czech Republic and predominantly China.

my favourite drill:

This is what the FedEx guy dropped off today :). I bought Gedore brand tools for all my imperial/SAE sized needs. A second delivery is on its way. Interestingly, the Gedore package does not say "Made in Germany" anywhere :headscrat.

"Kirschen" / "Two Cherries" chisel from Germany and "Nooitgedagt" chisel from Netherland. The dutch company don`t exist anymore (was sold to "Record" then together with Record to American Tool Company/Irwin and then to Newell Rubbermaid)
but here is a information page: www.nooitgedagt-ijlst.nl

Its a 1810PS, yes all the Swiss and German Bosch tools are on clearance here so I've been picking them up every chance I get. Next I'm getting a Finecut saw and Boschhammer :) also a cordless drill or 2 if I can find any new Swiss ones. I'll put pics of the files up in a bit.

I was on a road trip, so I haven't been here in a while...

ok I`ll just wait what i receive from "Gakken Mook" , hopefully its worth the money and not too many "Deen" advertisements :)

I hope you'll like it too. I've read a review from a person who sees things very objectively about hand tools and he approves of it...so, it should be ok (?). :D

picked this up at the book store....hopefully this is made in japan .. :)
Potato chips with seaweed :)
DSC00001-30.jpg

:lol: ! Interesting book store...they must be specialized in importing Japanese manga and magazines?
Japanese chips are the best...if you ever go to Japan, you'll find some very interesting (weird even) flavours that you'd never see anywhere else in the world. Oh, and, those should be JDM ... but there has been shifts to offshore production of snacks and chips in Hong Kong and Taiwan for example.

I haven't tried these universal type bits/screwdrivers yet as I'm just skeptical. Perhaps it's most useful for keeping inside the house or to take with you on a trip.

also picked up this "Format" punch for 50 cent and the PH3+PH4 offset screwdriver from "Drehmax" for 1.- :)

Mmm, nice prices!

... Why do you like the NWS pliers wrench better than the Knipex ?

:+1:
Attappmann, please tell us your objective opinion on the two brands. Inquiring minds want to know. :)

I wish Knipex comes out with a serrated jaw version of the pliers wrench.

Heres the Swiss files....

Where did you find the "Oregon" brand sold at?

c`mon guys !!! what do you have for jobs ???? Pilot ? Engineer ? Pimp ?? :D
Does anybody need a apprentice/trainee ? :D i will work for a swiss/german watch a month.... :D

@superautobacs:
I`m eagerly waiting for the new issue !! :) The "Bookstore" also has other goods like videos, a wall of "Hello Kitty" stuff :) and also like 15 different sorts of potato chips from japan and other food. There are a couple of japanese companies located here (Technics/Panasonic, Sharp, Olympus, Pentax, Makita ("Dolmar" chain saw production site)). outsourcing of food ??? ahhh first tools now food.... :) :( :)
For serious work i always would use the correct screwdriver. Everything else is more like DIY use or for emergency situations i dare to say.

Not a pliers wrench but pipe wrenches and with serrated jaws :)
"Dako" 1", 1 1/2" and 2" swedish pattern pipe wrenches.

It seems Gedore wants to clear out the last "Dako" branded inventory, these 3-piece sets are for sale for just 52.90 to 53.90 € compared to the 2007 list price of 190.28 € it`s a steal.

thk2c, the time keeping tool from the old world that I’ve posted is a Lange & Söhne, made in Glashütte. It is my favorite time keeping tool (aka watch) as it doesn’t catch any attention at all.

Just as I suspected. FELO does make some of the Screwdrivers for HAZET. I think the new HAZET 802 are made by FELO exclusively for HAZET.

Monte, you should put some thing like a pen or a beer bottle next to the wrench when you take the photo to highlight the size of the wrench :)

Heres my latest purchase. Not a tool you normally see here but its from the old world. The newers ones you see for sale here are now Chinese and the NOS are USA made but I came across a pair of Finnish made Fiskars a few days ago and had to buy it.

Phang, I looked at it too quick and thought it was a Glashütte Original (also a great watch). Langes are my favorite watches of all time with IWC a close second and Glashutte Original third. Wear it in good health. :beer:
