After my grandfather passed, I inherited all of his tools. Most of them were Utica, Barcalo, J.H. Williams, Oswego, Westcott (Keystone), Crescent, and Xcelite. As I started to put together my own shop, I picked up a Buffalo Forge drill press, D.R. Barton Chisels, and Huther saw blades. For storage, I have a few Union tool boxes. Once I realized most of my favorite tools were made in NYS, I really started to appreciate my tool collection even more.

Are there any other noteworthy tool manufacturers (past or present) in New York State?

Matco tool boxes. That's all I know of. Above beat me too it. I think Williams had or still has a plant somewhere in western NY.

Chicago Pneumatic air tools were made in Utica until a few years ago. On the machine tool front, Seneca Falls and Hardinge both come to mind. Scratching my head currently as I know a few others, but its been a long day and I'm enjoying a Veteran's Day drink.....so I might be back.

On my other favorite "tool" thread, Savage Arms, Remington, and Ithaca were/are all NY based, along with quite a few others.

Vulcan tools made socket sets in NY; not sure, but I think it was the Buffalo area. They were later bought by Willlams, some time (guess) around the late 60's or early 70's.

I just picked up a SWEET set of Barcalo combos 3/16" - 11/4" (pics here http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=222630) and am in the process of getting the 2 missing pieces. Also have a couple of Williams marked Brooklyn.

JP Danielson in Jamestown NY http://home.comcast.net/~alloy-artifacts/danielson-jp-company.html

A couple of other smaller manufacturers here http://home.comcast.net/~alloy-artifacts/other-makers-p2.html

One of the other posts mentioned Seneca Falls.............Goulds Pumps still operates a foundry there.

Camillus was new york, if you consider knives and other blades tools (which I do). They don't really exist anymore but made a ton of stuff. Cutco also, they sell some non-kitchen knives through their cult like sales system; they're real good though.

Hydramec is located in Scio, NY. They make the Snap-On pullers.

http://hydrameconline.com/about_us

"Hydramec's largest customer is Snap-On Tools Incorporated based in Kenosha,WI. Hydramec is Snap-On's oldest supplier of tools selling to Snap-On since the early 1920's. The Hydramec product line is distributed by Snap-On in the United States, Canada, and to more than 100 countries around the world. Although the tools manufactured bear the Snap-On logo, almost everything the company manufactures has been designed, developed and tested in Hydramec's factory."

Hand tools and adjustable wrenches.

Now part of Bahco.

According to ancestry.com Mr Hjorth, the founder, is still alive in his 80's or 90's and living in Chula Vista, CA as of Sept, 2013. :)

I always look for the older adjustable Crescent wrenches made in Jamestown. Very well made.

AMF (American Machine & Foundry Co.) was originally in Brooklyn, NY. They owned DeWalt from 1949 to 1960. Also infamous for having owned Harley-Davidson during a low point in that company's history.

Ingersoll-Rand was originally in New York City.

Niagara Machine & Tool Works (sheet metal tools and machinery), Buffalo, NY.

Porter-Cable was originally in Syracuse.

Prentiss Vise Co.

Seneca Falls Mfg. Co. (machine tools)

Any source that tells you the founder of a company that was selling tools before 1900 is still alive in his 80's or 90's and living in Chula Vista, CA as of Sept, 2013 is not one I'd want to be using as a reference.
The William J. Hjorth Company of Jamestown, New York was an entirely separate company from the Swedish B.A. Hjorth & Co, which was renamed Bahco in the 1950's.

Tools for eating:

https://www.libertytabletop.com/index.asp

A sound byte on the radio says Liberty is the only remaining flatware manufacturer in the US and/or Canada.

The best eating tools IMHO are still US made Oneida (various plants in NY) and older (pre-2007'ish?) Syracuse China. Utica Cutlery still makes some high end knives in Utica according to a friend of a friend of a step.....yada, yada, take it for what its worth......but admittedly they do import a lot of products as everybody does these days.

JMHO but one of the best woodsplitters ever made, aptly branded "American" is also another proud NY product to this day.

Not to pick nits but a little Googling reveals Oneida no longer manufactures anything themselves. They concentrate on design and distribution. The work is all sub-contract. This NYT article says, "Oneida no longer makes flatware in the area [upstate NY]."

http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2012/01/05/private-equity-firm-sees-a-future-in-flatware/

Further, Wikipedia states, "Oneida no longer operates manufacturing in the United States."

That's cool to know. Think I missed your post the first time around. I pass through Scio every once in a blue moon and would have never known some of the Snap On Pullers I have are made there, thanks.

You Guys forgot about McKaig & Hatch Tools. Buffalo, NY. They had Headquarters on Niagara Street. They had a forge on the corner of Skillen & Ontario. 2 minutes from J H Williams. on Kenmore Ave & Vulcan. I had a friend that lived on Newfield Street about 200 yards away. He said you could feel the forging presses at night lying in bed.
I have a excellent pair of regular pliers from them. Like new. Tight and good! Can't buy new that good anymore.
Yes Williams around the corner made Vulan and TRW at the end. My Grandfather worked at Williams. I have posted lots of pics a few years ago.
