I thow away a lot of tools that I don't want to be bothered with trying to sell. Usually they are just not worth the effort. I took about 30 pounds of old mixed sockets to the swap meet last year, and put a sign on them.. Free, just don't make a pig of yourself. This stopped some from trying to take the whole bucket. I am running out of days to mess with this stuff, and I don't want to leave it for someone else to have to deal with it.

I am pretty sure I would pay for a large flat rate box, add $20 on top of that and see what I can get from you. I love mystery boxes.

Man, I wouldn't mind paying for a small flat rate box and a little extra for a mystery assortment either. If you wanted to do this, let everyone know...

To quote my favorite book...

"Mail is the best! Mail is hope! Mail is a mystery! Look! A box! Always good to get a box! Envelopes can go either way. But bad news rarely comes in a box. Only goodies! God, I love mail! Especially mail I don't recognize! It could be anything! Opportunity, a big adventure, a whole new chapter in life about to unfold! I love this moment! God, I hope it's not a product sample. Ooooh, that would be bad! I get all excited and it's a f**king mini Tide detergent. Do you think that's what it is? I'm sure that's what it is! Now I'm depressed. It's got to be Tide or some female-hygiene product. God, I hate it when they do that! I'm furious just thinking about it. Damn those people to hell. Wait, why am I getting upset? It's mail!" ~ Serge A. Storms

My friend's dad makes a killing renting hydraulic dump trailers as small dumpsters. I scored an toolbox full of tools once. They always get some good stuff and make money doing it!

I'm always pulling stuff out of the dumpster at my carwash. There's three or four guys that search it for cans so they usually get the really good stuff before get a chance. It's unbelievable.

I know the people, the type of people that are throwing this stuff away. Which has led me to a saying. "Poor people throw away things I couldn't have afforded in the first place."

try digging in a dumpster on a military base. thats where the good stuff is at. if they do nt need it it goes inthe trash.

that's about the most misinformed thing I have ever read here ... almost EVERYTHING goes to a liquidation auction. junk or not and damn near nothing is thrown away.

i can safely say this because I am on one of the largest federal installations in the SouthEast on a daily basis.

Think I may drop by the back of Lowes later & check out the roll-off...

That is the problem, they are sealed packers. You lose a bunch because of the hydraulic packer.

Pics, Pics, Pics. this I gotta see. Talk about fringe benefits.

I just started back at that job 2 weeks ago. I worked there for three years the first go around. You would have no idea what I drug home. I would take a picture of my garage but that might make you mad. I gathered 8" blocks, out of square plywood (that was oversized and could be squared) from the local mill. All of my insulation (R-19) electric wire (receptacles every 4 feet) every sheet of plywood (3/4 roof, 1/2" sides and ends, 7/16" on the inside ceiling, doubled 3/8" on the floor in the attic and 3/4" on the inside walls) AND the Horizon 200 waste oil furnace that needed the pump serviced and a couple cracks welded up on the burner area. With those materials I built a 24x32 garage with an 11'6" ceiling height to have a 18x10 garage door. The only big stuff I needed to purchase was the 2x6's, trusses, shingles, siding and the door of course. Kick myself in the rump daily for leaving that job...Glad to be back now.

about 3 years ago, it seemed like everyone was cleaning out garages and basements around here. there was tons of stuff sitting at the curb waiting for trash pickup.
in a 3 week span i scored
old engine hoist, missing the cylinder
4'x4' steel wall cabinet
cheap 4' workbench still in the box
4 15x8 cragar SST wheels in good cond
20ft +/- 1" black pipe
2 truck bed toolboxes full of stuff, tools, home improvement items, plumbing fittings, electrical outlets and switches.

gave the hoist to a friend, didnt have room for it in the garage, cabinet, and bench are in my garage, wheels are on my s-10blazer, pipe got used on my brushguard and spare tire mount, sold the truck boxes for $5 each, and scrapped the rest.

Good circular saws and extension cords are throw away.Have a Dewalt circular saw this way,a roofing company thought the saw was bad and it was not.Blade was junk.Installed a new blade and the saw works great. There shops that throw out good stuff and you do not pick them out,you get fired for it.Howard Miller and Knoll are this way, fire anyone retrieving anything thrown out.

I think my favorite score was a Craftsman four wheeler jack. I picked it out because it still looked new, took it home and it would not lift weight, the jack was leaking. I called my local store, told them it leaked and they told me to bring the whole unit in, and, you guessed it, they traded it for a new one in the box!!! I love Sears.

I love finding stuff in the dumpsters at work... Guy next door keeps a real close eye on the dumpster people use when cleaning out their storage units and. We cash in on it plus the vending machine guy saves all his expired stuff and dumps it off on us its amazing how many grills, fridges and furniture people get rid of

Just so you know, this is a theft-prevention policy. If not in place, one person in the building could throw out 'defective' or 'unwanted' merchandise, then either dumpster dive for it themselves or have a friend do it for them. I can't tell you how many times I've seen this happen...or found evidence of it.

I don't necessarily agree with the policy, but I understand it. I think there should be a better way to deal with it...

I have found a broken Mac 3" extension bar and a #2 Craftsman phillips screwdriver in great shape in the dumpster.Got the extension bar replaced. My father has a friend Charlie that he calls "scrounge",goes to the scrap yards buys some things.Once found a snowblower in great shape and ran good.Found an IR 1/4 air ratchet and fixed it,works fine. Some of the stuff he puts on Ebay, gets good money out of Briggs and Stratton carbs that he got out of the scrap yard.Puts in the desription that they need rebuilt and some people do not read that.

Yup... when I worked at the hardware store in H.S., a co-worker was doing this at a pretty regular basis... when we did the inventory (count everything including nuts/bolts - sucked!) the mgrs. found alot of tools and equip. short - long story short, he got caught in the act and was prosecuted - don't know how much $$$ was actually lost but it was ALOT.
