My Mom's Hummels are worthless. My wife's Lladros are right behind. The top 1% will always be worth something, the other 99% will be virtually worthless.

Add Thomas Kinkade to that list - can't believe people bought the schlock he cranked out. But I've been in homes where it was proudly displayed. As H. L. Mencken said: "no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."

why not both? I collect old tools...to use. Cheaper than new. I'd much rather buy something 50 years old, made in USA, and used than brand new Chinese.

There is a fine line between collecting and Obsessive beahvior.

Which side are you on is the question?

50 of the same tool? your inner child is a greedy sob. you ate all the icecream. drank all the soda. and didnt share your toys.

I do collect old tools because i enjoy the history of them and I like to use them. most collections are just to look at but with old tools they are something to use and enjoy.

I have been collecting wrenches for a long time and unless I have put one in a shadow box for display, any of them are likely to be used at least once or twice. My go-bag has a mix of old and new hand tools in it, including two egg-beaters and several Perfect handle tools.
I enjoy holding a vintage wrench and thinking about who may have used it, where it was used, and why it was designed the way it was.

What's the solution? Should all of us with excess tools sell them to users?

Bill

People can do whatever the hell they want with their money. That includes buying tools to collect, hoard, use, or weld together to make works of art. And that's what they do.

Should I tell you what to do with your money?

Maybe we have kind of blurred the line between collecting and making an investment out of older tools. Any item (or company) is a risk. It could go up in value and could go down.

I buy most to use and just some to have because I like them and they interest me.

I both collect and use tools, I have a few old tools that I do not use only because I fear dropping them or breaking them by accident. For the most part I try and use most of my tools but when I have x amount of tools (like a boo coo ton of hammers), I might not be able to use all of them.

I think it depends on the tool and the condition in which it was found. I have a few old NOS hand planes that were never used. They're only like that once. I'm not going to be the one to degrade their originality by sharpening the iron and running them across some wood, particularly when I have other old planes that are in great "user" condition and will do the same task. I like using old tools, and when I find them in good condition with some patina, and a few bumps and bruises, I keep using them. That being said, I also have a a few "user" quality planes that were inherently fragile from the start. Even though they're not gem mint NOS planes, I use them only sparingly because they're prone to damage/breakage by the very nature of their design, etc.

In recent years, I've been buying older Craftsman tools mostly with the =V= manufacturer's mark on them. Those may have some collector value, however, I buy them strictly as "user" tools to be used. As a matter of fact, I don't mind buying wrenches, sockets, ratchets, etc. with a little age and wear on them because then there's no doubt in my mind that I'm going to use the tool. I'm not going to abuse them, but I will, and do use them. I certainly don't need any of them, so I guess I'm collecting them too, but it's a "working" collection.
