Tools that always go missing?

I'm sure everyone has one tool that always seems to be missing when you need it. For me, it's my 3/8" ratchets. They seem to grow legs and find hiding places. I was changing an idler pulley last night and 3 of my 4 3/8" ratchets are nowhere to be found. The worst part is I just cleaned my entire garage 3 days ago. It's killing me trying to figure out where they are.

What tools do you guys always seem to lose?

Tape measures. I have quite a few, but always have to search for one when I need it. I started buying the oranges ones so they're easier to find.

Any tool I lay down while I go to do something else.

When I come back to use it, it's disappeared. :dunno:

I don't lose many tools in the garage, it is too small for that. But at work I lose 7/16 box end wrenches. I keep a stock of them, buying them up at the swap meets when I see them.

I have approximately 30 utility knives.
I put one in every room of the house, several in the shop, lots of extras in the toolboxes, carry one in my pocket all day, etc. Neither my wife nor I can EVER find one when we have an Amazon package to open.

I try and avoid that in my tool box everything has a place and make it a habit to put back all the tools I take out , if I see an empty space I go looking for that tool, so next time I'm ready , but yes I do forget where I put stuff. I think it's age related.

#1 answer has to be tape measures,,,,,,I am blessed with 3 workshops/areas........seperate woodworking shop.........dedicaited barn/shop auto, metal atv etc.........and in the house a workbench/shop area in the garage.........SO three places to loose/misplace things......I can never find the tape measures, I have purchased all new hand tools in threes......the wife has her own kitchen drawer of tools [which she has marked to catch me "borrowing" when I can,t fine mine!!!!! I believe that like tools migrate to each other.......all philips screwdrivers wind up in one building???????? 1/2 & 9/16 wrenches wind up together when I finally find them..............how they get from one building to another amazes me ........happy thanksgiving to all

Always tape measures and screwdrivers for me. Especially tapes, I could start with 4-5 in one room and have to leave the room just to get another.

Usually the screwdrivers are in one of my pockets.

Everything. I specialize in the 'mic drop' method of tool organization. As soon as I'm done with a tool.....

Not sure if you're serious, but I worked with a guy once who did that, literally. I was helping him out with a big job on his car that I had done a couple times, and he would drop tools on the ground the second he was done with them. Sometimes he would take the tool with him, looking for another tool, and the second he saw the tool he needed, he would drop the first one right there on the spot. It seemed like I spent half the day stepping on tools, and the other half looking for them. I was trying to be polite but it was starting to drive me crazy how anyone could work like that. My wife was there too, and as soon as we were alone in our car, heading out, it's all we could talk about for miles, with both of us shaking our heads.

10mm sockets are apparently the number one missing tool. This is according to all 3 of my sons. I certainly believe them since I couldn't find a single 10mm socket anywhere in my garage when I started reorganizing it. I built an entire rack of nothing but 3/8" drive 6 point sockets, hopefully I'll end this problem. I had a similar problem with tape measures, but thanks to HF freebies and some of the Lowes and Home Depot specials, I have plenty in both Arkansas and Georgia.

I don't normally find myself looking for tools except for a hammer, screwdrivers and pliers. These are the tools the wife uses from time to time and the grandson does too. When they use them they take them to where they are going to use them and for some reason they don't get returned to the garage. So I have to talk to them, find out where they left the tools, then go get the tools and take them back to the garage.

When my son was young I never blamed him for loosing my tools, fast forward many years and wife number two is always talking my screwdrivers, putty knives, and scisors. I open a drawer somewhere and there will be a little pile of my tools all neatly stacked near one of her projects. Lol

I might know that guy if he was from Galesburg Illinois. I thought he was nuts. His angle grinder took off when it hit the ground still spinning!
