Tools to get from Germany

My wife travels to Germany from time to time for work. She has been asking me what I would like her to bring me back from her trip as a souvenir. I have been thinking about starting to ask her to bring me some tools, but I can't think of anything that is unavailable or difficult to find here in the US.

You guys have any tool related ideas? Thanks in advance for your help!

I will get something even if it's available here, simply because I can tell my son the story about his mom getting them on her trips. Ultimately they will all be handed down to him some day.

I am not sure if they are cheaper over there, and I will probably have a more difficult time with warranty if I needed it as well, but that does not bother me.

Knipex built like a tank. You'd just about have to abuse or misuse it to need a warranty. Warranty wouldn't factor into my decision. I'd bring back as much as I could.

The Germans ans Swiss make excellent cutting tools and instruments. I'd be looking for various sizes of tweezers and the like.

If you use roll pin punches, you may have noticed that your SAE roll pin punches don't fit metric roll pins all that well. Metric roll pin punches are expensive and hard to find here, but cheap and plentiful in Germany.

Like Ikea furniture, but can't stand the fact that your philips screwdriver fits their screws like ****? Every hardware store in Germany has Posidriv screwdrivers. Here, you're lucky if you can find a pozidriv bit in a set.

That's one product myself and a lot of others here will never buy again from Knipex. I recommend Channellock Needle Nose from now on...

Cutters, Plierswrench, Cobras, Bolt Cutter- can't be beat in my opinion.

Buy me as much Gedore as you can carry! I can only hope it is cheaper over there.

But seriously, I'm SURE Monte would have some ideas for you. He'd even know where to send her out there (he lives there according to his GJ avatar).

I would personally consider it a wasted opportunity if she came back with a bunch of stuff that you could get over here / via the internet (Wiha drivers, Wera drivers, Knipex pliers, etc)(Chadstoolbox.com).

If you want to have something real special, it'd be tough without actually being over there in person. I agree that finding promo items and stuff like that would be cool mainly because it's not common in general and virtually nonexistent over here.

I'd try to find a cool Stahlwille/Hazet/etc toolbox if it means saving a couple hundred bucks. This one is ~$900 stateside if you can find it!

What kind of stuff tickles your fancy? Plenty of guys on here have their little tool fetishes (collections of ~300 ratcheting screwdrivers and so on). That would be helpful for us and for her.

IIRC, a few members mentioned that although Hazet is on the pricey side here, in Germany they are much less.

I don't know what your wife had in mind or if she realized what she would be getting into, but keep in mind that airlines to charge extras for over a certain weight, or for extra "luggage". A Hazet Assistant would be damn cool if you could get it at half of what it goes for over here, not sure your wife would be keen on shopping for one and then the box won't be that small...but it would be a heck of a "souvenir"

Maybe do not get something just to get it, but look at your list of items you need to get in the near future (you do have a list???). And from those items, what would really make sense to get in Germany because they are difficult to get here, or big price advantage getting it there.

Thanks for the ideas! I don't want to burden my wife with large items, but she has the mean set to get them home without packing them with her luggage. That being said, she does have to work while she is there, however she has indicated her international associates will have it ready for her when she arrives.

That being said, I want to keep it somewhat small. I will be traveling with her next time she goes, and then I can hunt for tools while she works. At that point I may spring for some bigger items, I just figure tools would be a much cooler souvenir than a coffee mug or t-shirt.

I sent her some brand names, and her counterpoints over there said they can get anything tool related, as many of them are technicians. Quite frankly, I actually jealous as she is going to be driving the. 'Ring there as well!
