Whatever you put in it should be things you're okay with losing in case you have to bail on the vehicle, that way your not worried about your SK/Proto/Snappy sets being stolen while it sits on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck.

Yup, The police called a tow company to have a family member's car towed from an accident scene. I went with him to pick it up. When we got there, we were told we couldn't see it til the towing and storage was paid. We paid, and they pulled it around. Glove box was rifled through and his tools were gone from the trunk. When we inquired about the tools, they responded with, " Can you prove they were in there when it was towed?"

Towing companies are organized crime.

In addition to what comes with the car, I have a tire pump, OBD-II reader, booster cables and a snowbrush. And most importantly, my cell phone. The snowbrush stays in all year, because I'd get caught without it if I took it out for the summer.

In the wifes car I only really have the tire changing gear that came with it, as well as a small emergency kit with reflective triangles, jumper cables and first aid kit. We don't get too far off the beaten path so aren't too far from help.

In my pickup I have a few more things.
-water in the summer
-bug spray
-sun screen
-warm.sleeping bag
-rain gear
-extra engine oil and ATF
-a big socket set with an assortment of 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" sockets, ratchets and extensions as well as allen keys and bit screwdriver
-1/2" torque wrench
-a small box with assorted pliers, screwdrivers, vice grips, hammer, crescent wrench and pipe wrench
-jumper cables
-zip ties
-duct tape
-wd-40
-first aid kit
-knife
-flashlight
-ratchet straps
-winter and summer gloves

I have a dodge megacab so it really doesn't take up much space. I don't use it to repair my truck aside from changing a flat and boosting myself/others, but I take the truck camping, pull my snowmobiles and just generally end up places where I've had to do minor work on other things (visiting people that don't own any tools etc.) I spent $90 on the socket set 10 years ago and everything else is just random stuff I've accumulated over the years so I have no issues if it gets stolen or goes missing.

On a side note, if you ever have to boost a stranger make sure you connect both batteries, no matter how much they argue. I learned that one the hard way, and will leave people stranded before I let them connect their own battery.

I have a set of basic hand tools but not really for working on the car. They're mostly for times I'm in a place where I need to work on something else.

Even with my old jeep almost every time something blew up that I could fix I didn't have parts. Like when the starter grenaded in a parking lot. Carried a 4 way lug for years & never used it...

My current car, a 2013 Malibu doesn't even have a spare tire. Anything goes wrong it's a tow.

Trunk box has a few auto related things... 12 volt compressor... couple of ratchet straps and a rechargeable jump pack. No doubt the compressor gets the most use.

Otherwise it's a $10 husky bag with screwdrivers, hammer pry bar & tape measure... various pliers & wire strippers... folding hex & torx sets. Stuff like that.
