Ugh, my Dad had his truck broken into and the scumbag stole his Husky bag full of Klein tools and his fluke meters. (He's a commercial electrician BTW) Police report was filed and waiting on the security cam footage...

Just goes to show you how vehicles aren't safe to store your tools. Pisses me off as he depends on those to make a living, close to $900 of tools.

We are in the High desert area near Victorville, CA, so if anybody near us sees a black Husky bag (the 18" total tech bag) and/or a set of Klein Journeyman pliers (needle nose, linemans, dikes, two pairs of Channellocks, as well as a full set of Klein screwdrivers) at a Pawn shop or swap meet, PM me please.

The Fluke meters consisted of a 77 series and a voltage sensor, in a grey fluke bag. Also got assorted step bits and a T & B crimper.

Thanks guys, and remember to keep your tools locked up. Too many worthless pieces of humanity out there....:willy_nil

Check the two pawn shops on or near D street in Victorville.

Most ended up there years ago.

That completely blows bud. I've been hit a couple times myself and know the pain all too well. I just spent 4.5 years in your town building the new jail and that's about the only place I'd feel safe walking away from my truck. Good luck to your dad, I hope the cameras have something worth while.

Sorry to hear about you dad's loss. Hopefully they'll be recovered. I heard some Snap On and Mac drivers living in my neighborhood had their trucks broken into and thousands of dollars worth of items ere stolen even while their trucks were parked in the driveway of their respective homes. No where is safe.

I've called all the shops on 7th st, nothing yet.

I guess they (pawn shops) have to report what they take in to the local PD, so hopefully if the scumbag goes the pawn shop route, the PD will get 'em on that end.

Anxious to see the security cam footage, as the lady in charge of the cameras at the church states there was a vehicle involved.

Isn't that the truth. This all went down in a CHURCH parking lot. A church!

I hope your dad gets his tools back. A thief who steals a mans tools of the trade is the lowest kind of scum there is. My home was broken into when I went to the hospital for x-rays two years ago. Dirtbag got me for about $18000 worth of stuff and firearms in a safe. I prayed he would get caught every day. 6 months later they got him in Chicago with one of my pistols. And drugs. He's doing 10 years in Louisiana. He was just early released from prison about a month before he hit my house. I hope your Dad is as lucky. Write the serial number of everything. It really helps the police.

Clowns got into mine and grabbed a tool bag with cheap **** (Great Neck socket set, HF wood handled hammers, dollar store screwdrivers, coffee can with rusty nuts and bolts and nails, and a 15 pound lead brick) Cheap tools to loan to co-workers and the nuisance weight that kept the bag from walking off.
It had some serious weight, so they probably thought they had a score, woulda been fun to see the face of the Criminal Mastermind when he opened it.

Worst I ever ran into was an elevator repair guy from NJ who had his truck with all tools stolen in NYC.
This wasn't a loss that could be recovered with any amount of money...the guy worked with dozens of different types of NYC elevators, ranging from 60 year old fossils to brand new ones, and had MANY specialized tools that were obsolete by many decades or handmade to do particular jobs.
I have no idea what he did. That was back in the early eighties when street crime and violent muggings were out of control, and I doubt that the police did anything beyond filing his report.

Man this ***** to hear! I'm an electrician too and had some of my stuff stolen when I was a 4th year apprentice. It's hard for me to see that he ONLY lost $900, a new fluke would be close to $200 alone. Good luck finding the piece(s) of **** that will steal the very things a man makes a living with.

sorry for the loss and i feel your pain.

i know people seldom think about this type of thing happen to them, but it may be a good time to look into/ check up on home owner insurance. i was told by mine that tools were only covered up to 1000 dollars unless I opted to increase it. Not sure how true this is, but they got another few bucks from me.

Pretty bad day when the tools you use to make a living are stolen from you. Was his truck unlocked, or did they damage it?

I know some here think they are a not worth anything but my work van has a heck of an alarm. I get alerts on my remote if it goes off. And if I'm out of range of the car for the 2way remote I get alerts on my phone. I have a tilt sensor, glass break sensor and the standard shock sensor along with a battery back up. If my van is stolen I can track it from my phone. I can also start it and lock and unlock it from my phone. I turn my shock sensor down to prevent false alarms. The glass break or door monitoring will give me the best protection. Also if my remote or phone reports a impact trigger I know someone or something hit it hard. To the OP sorry for your dad losing his tools. I hate thieves. It was probably a drug addict looking for something to sell fast for a fix.

Had some things stolen a few years ago. To this day I'm still replacing some of them. To this day I still think to myself, "Hey where did that one...oh right it was stolen." I feel your pain.

Truck was locked, the jerk must've used a slim jim or similar as the window was scratched. Also rifled through the glove box and took the emergency key, so now he must also change the locks.

Thanks for the info. Will definitely be looking into those. It's a shame, because I remember my home 10 years ago to be pretty isolated from all this ****, now it seems to have spread like a virus.

Just plain terrible. Any auto or home owner's insurance to cover the loss?

Yes, but it's a $1000 deductible.

I did just get him the Commercial electric 22-Piece Tool Set so he can use that until he gets his stolen tools back or another set of Kleins.

I can't wait to see that camera footage tomorrow....

I know Michigan is a long ways away but I seen this on CL just now.

Thanks for the post. The bag that was stolen looks like this:
Makes you wonder what % of tools on Craigslist are actually legit.

Pm me if you need any alarm recommendations. I have had a van broken into as well. Was the company's van I was working for at the time but it was my hand tools and their drills that were stolen. It sucked. They paid for my tools and then I had to pout alarms on all the vans. I was too commercial audio/video at the time. Once they found out I new how to install car alarms I had to do the fleet of 20 vans.

Wow, you don't hear about that too often. I wonder if stealing the key could be considered a worse crime than the tools because of the intent behind stealing the key. They would be screwed if they got caught because it doesn't just sound like a random crime of opportunity. Family had a brand new central AC unit stolen from the side of their house. Cops said he was about to get like 55 dollars in scrap. Still getting restitution.

Were the tools marked in a unique way? If not, and if they break up the pieces to sell at multiple pawns, CL ads, etc. it may be difficult for the police to seize the tools and/or prove a case against the perps. And unless I missed it, I don't think you mentioned the Fluke's serial number.

Recording serial numbers really is helpful in recovering stolen items from pawns, CL ads even something like a unrelated dope house search warrant. More than once I noticed many nice tools that the target had no seeming use for. The serial numbers were run on the statewide database and no hits received meaning the items were not entered as stolen which is impossible without serial numbers. In some cases we seize some tools just because the suspicion that they are stolen is so high. Then, every channel possible is used to see if same/similar tool lots have been stolen by contacting neighboring agencies, poring over our own burglary and theft reports. Again, in most cases we are not able to hang a case on someone and return tools to their owners.

Hey, I'm guilty of not doing it too sometimes, but recording serial numbers can be the "make or "break" piece of the puzzle. If no SNs then some very discreet unique marking can also be used in most cases.

Good luck getting your tools back.

Sorry to hear about this. In the past I've had the misfortune to live in some run-down neighborhoods and have had a few break-ins and thefts. Never once, with or without serial numbers of the items, have any of the items been recovered. I truly wish you better luck than I had.

Over time I've come to realize that "out of sight, out of mind" is one of the better deterrents to thieves. Try not to leave it where they can see it or don't make it obvious that you have it. If that doesn't work, well there's always Smith and Wesson.

Yep. My dad had his company logo on his truck. Scumbag probably figured there were goodies inside.

I like the S&W idea but our legal system is so fkd up the crook would be the one sympathized.

I hope the security cam recording helps out. When I had a hit and run on my car the security cam was one of the most frustrating and useless parts. Just before the guy hit my car the sun was blocked by a cloud, so video was grainy, but the killer was NOBODY could get the video off of the recording system the place used.
