Top Gear Seats.

Having (almost) finished my 6BT Engine Display stand (still to be off loaded from the trailer and detailed) I have started on yet another small project.

Some one posted this photo here on the GJ forum recently.

Apologies that I do not remember the post or who posted it to give credit for the idea and if you read this thank you.

It may remind some of you that watch the TV Show Top Gear from the UK as they have similar seats when they have guests. More than likely they came from the same place as the Rover seats in the above photo. Anyway it gave me an idea as to what to do with some Holden Torana (GM Australia) seats that I have had for many years and first intended to use them in my 1923 T Roadster.

Well having seen the above photo I decided I would finaly put the seats to use and make something similar so I have a seat to relax on in the workshop near the wood heater.

I have the steel today so will make a start soon.

Every now and then, you refer to your wood stove, its funny, because you live in Australia, and i didn't think it got to cold there. I will make it there one day, and confirm this cold australian conspiracy that you speak of.

Nearly done. A place for the Beer did not think of that. To late now.

Well whilst you have reminded me of the wood heater. here it is. A friend made this for me years ago. Has been good here in the winter..

Ok, seat update. Frame made.

Still need to clean up the welds, Drill to mount seats and paint it.

You could make little end tables on each side, They could be arm rest's and a place to put your beer.Make them out of some kind of recycled auto parts.
Are you sure your Australian, all the Aussie's i know will incorporate beer into all there activities in some way.
And where are you in australia? and how cold does it get there?

Oooooooooooooh I'll get killed for this so you had better come to my funeral . Why have a table for the beer when you have a wife that will get it an open it for you.

Better still I have a mate and his Australian Blue Healer opens the fridge, gets the beer from the fridge and takes it to him. Does not open it though.

Can your Dog do that

This time of year being so cold a beer is out and I have a Jim Beam. Beer is a summer drink here.

The original Top Gear seats were made for the show from Vauxhall parts (and destroyed in the TG props fire). They're heavily inspired by Ron Arad's Rover Chair, which is now a highly valued collectible. I think your pic is of a close copy of the Rover Chair, also using Rover seats.

i had initally posted that picture but did so in the wrong room, so it got deleted i think.

I found that picture while looking for living room furniture. that couch was made by an artist ron arend. it has a price tag of 10k on it.

needless to say, i have 2 black mg buckets that i will make my own!

Man no need for end tables. A real beer drinker never sits a beer down unless it is empty. In that case you need trash cans on each end.

You are correct about the price. I think mine will cost about $60-00 AU once finished but I may have to get them covered. Canvas or similar and not vinyl as I want to be able to clean them. If under $80-00 AU when finished I will be happy.

With most of today's vehicles, seat setups like this in the future, are almost assuredly bound to have cup holders.

I could have done that if I had a centre console. The Torana (Car) the seats came from I believe did not have a centre console with drink holders.

Next I will tear it appart and paint the frame.

I have the frame in primer and that is the extent of the work at present. Once painted I will look at getting some canvas covers made for the seats. I can water proof the canvas that way to keep them clean.

I could be mistaken, but if memory serves correct on the seats from the show, Jeremy Clarkson's seat has what looks like some type of flexible duct mounted between the seat back and the head rest. Pehaps to route air from a fan or a small stand up A/C unit hidden elsewhere. Have to wait for Monday night when they run episodes on BBC America. Nice work on the seat frame, you could try to incorporate some sliders/tray under the seats for a small cooler to store the Beer! Keep us posted!

Your seats work for sure - but with your skills, you could have made em just like the first photo! If I make a set like that, I'd attach the seats by a pivot so they would rock in the frame!

Begining to regret I made those comments. My Mrs had a laugh when she read this. She knows I joke .

More than likely I will end up making some more seats in the future and as these seats are fixed, future ones will most likely lay back and have a console ( A place for the Beer & Remote ). I have also seen motor bike seats done as computer chairs so may look into that idea. On TV last night a place advertised for Ruff Nuts Seat covers so I may even get something off the shelf if lucky. http://www.ruffnuts.com.au/

It could have been on the older episodes. The way the air the shows here, the only way to know how old it is, is to see who's in the hot seat or what car the Stig is driving. But check on you tube you might find an interview with the seats in the background. If it is some duct work, it would shoot air right at neck level.

The seats on the current series we are getting here are green and I understand they are fastracking the series as it is so popular here now.

Painted the frame red today as I found some red paint. Will cover with an old sheet until I get some covers.

I found a picture, not the best angle but look over Clarkson's right shoulder on the seat you can see what I'm reffering to as a duct. I always thought that seat was from an old Volvo 240. Again not the best picture.

Interesting. It is on the TV here tonight so I will be looking to see if I can work out just what it is. it may be something to do with the set for the show if not part of the seat.

and with the frame painted and finished then my Mum and my Wife said it needed some more.

I have to admit the seats did need some type of cover and this was their idea so I guess it works and will save me getting covers made.

Concrete floors with a drip tray, But you should know better than that a Cummins does not leak.

I can know sit by the wood heater and admire my truck that is not in the living room

I keep mulling this over for the old back seat from my 91 Trooper, comes out as one piece seat and back so it would just need a frame and some arms with cup holders made up. I even have the matching heated front seats, maybe I could wire them up to a transformer and have a nice toasty backside on cold days.

Would like to see that here when you have it done heated seats are not that common here, unless it is an import.
