I'm still trying to figure out how to come up with an equal load of test parts for each solution. I'm wanting to test for time required to clean and also for effective life of solutions. Biggest problem is finding enough rusty parts that are similar in size and amount of rust. Shouldn't be too long - just need time to work on it.

Rusty chain is a great idea. Would make the electrolytic method more of a challenge. Not that you were planning on doing that anyway. But I can dream.

Take some bare sheet steel, cut it into equal size pieces, and sit it out in the weather for a few weeks, or see what you can use to add some fast patina to it and force it to rust. A good salt bath ought to help it along.

Or go to someplace they work on brakes and ask them if you can have some scrap rotors or brake drums. Or go to your local scrapyard and see what they have in the way of rusty steel and get a few like pieces. It shouldn't be too hard to find rusty metal parts in like quantities.

Darn wish you could use your test on two of my neighbors, they sure could do with some heavy duty testing. One is crazy as a bed bug (not sure if rust is an issue, heck maybe they need some iron in their diet?). The other one wants to gossip 24/7 and I think maybe they are getting too much rust in their water???

Say maybe if someone could use chains on them it might help out??? Thank the good lord both leave me alone but I pity the poor fools that get close to them.

Oh I could just see it now on the world news testing going on straight jacket needed and iron poor blood is the cause of it all.

Woody - Thank you so much for your offer. I would give it due consideration, were I not surrounded by several neighbors who are bat-**** crazy. One is a good friend...hmmmm....

Anyway, I have a bunch of rusty fasteners, but it is hard to evaluate the rust removal of them. I am really looking for something I need to clean, and can be easily evaluated. The chain idea is a good idea but I hate to waste all that solution. I was thinking rusty plane parts or chisels or hand tools. I think I have some chisels - I'll check.

Also...how important is odor to most people? The new stuff stinks...kinda like a real strong fresh perm... Would that be a deal breaker? Obviously, all other things being equal, it would.

I troll flea markets and yard sales and always encounter old tin snips that are all rusty. The two halves of the snips can be separated, and assuming they're equally roached (which they usually are) should give you a great side to side test. Pick the winner of the two liquids, then find another pair and pit the winner against the electrolysis.

Interested, but not sure what result you are evaluating.

If quality of result then either evaporust or electrolysis will remove all, so just test the new stuff and see if you like the result. It's a qualitative test anyway.

If capacity of each solution then degrease a couple pounds of coarse steel wool, put it outside to rust for a few days, and then put equal amounts into a pint or cup of each solution, after leaving it for some time pull out the steel wool from each and weigh them to determine which solution removed more rust.

I've used Evaporust and vinegar. For a small job I prefer Evaporust, for something large I use vinegar, but I don't like the smell after a vinegar bath and the clean up afterward, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Happy with both results. Also have tried the Rustoleum (sp?) product. Kind of a gel in a squirt bottle, not a fan.

Slap a few parts, chains, or rebar in the electrolysis backward for a couple hours
they will all be equally rusted.

Start collecting old wrenches. Cheap and plentiful just about everywhere anymore.

The worse off they are the cheaper they sell. I know, I have dozens of less than prime examples in the museum.
