So Thanksgiving morning I was wandering about our farm. I am the fourth generation to call the place home. We have a number of outbuildings around the place. I usually avoid what we call the "oil house". When I was a kid it was used to store herbicides and pesticides and such.
But i saw something in a pile and this is what I found.

I have one that was my grandfathers and I have the soldering irons he used as well. It's over in my old shop that was his, but will eventually make it next door to my new shop for display.

I have Craftsman and Dunlap blowtorches. Here they are with an image from the 1949 Sears catalog.

You could polish that up for display somewhere, they look good all shone up.
Do any of your older relatives know what it was used for on the farm, did you have a workshop where soldiering was done for repairs for instance or did some one get the idea to burn weeds with it or something?
Just one note of caution here before displaying it in your home just check it's not contaminated with any residue of the old chemicals which were once stored in the same building, I have to be careful of this risk around my place as some of them were pretty nasty as you probably already know.

See those for sale all polished up and made into lamps....They look great but part of me cringes at the idea of drilling holes and ruining the functionality. But oh well. Saw an old Carter two-barrel carb made into a lamp, guessing nobody is gonna miss that one much, can’t swing a cat without hitting one of those.

Unfortunately, they're not with me. All i have is memories. One more reason to try to save all I can.

Picked up a couple of these in the past month or so. Got the one in the back of the first pic cause I thought the horizontal handle was cool and different. Was surprised about a week later to find the little miniature at a swap meet.

Good idea, "gather up ye fragments lest they be lost" as they say..
4 generations on the same farm is doing very well, my ancestors have moved around a lot more often than that. Recently I have been writing down stories just short anecdotes of things i heard about that happened and stories that my Dad used to tell going back through the generations. It's nice to have them written down, and saves those memories.

Farmer J-

Yeah. Past couple of years, buried my dad, my grandfather, both grandmothers, cousins...
It's turned this into a personal mission, to preserve what was and could be again.
I found something other stuff in that shed. I will post some pics this week. Work is going to be insane this morning.

A brass container with soft soldered seams and leather check valves holding pressurized gasoline. Yeah, what could possibly go wrong?

I say drill away.

Couple better pics of my smaller one, I cleaned some of the soot and tar off it.
