Anyone else's opinion on the universal?

I have the crafty universal pieces. I bought mine a few years back when they first came out, ala before they were offered in sets like they are now.

They are good tools when dealing with rounded , 4 point, triple square fasteners and external torx.

I think the other set you mentioned is better suited for conventional 6 point and 12 point fasteners. The ratchets in that set are ok. I've been using them for over 30 years, but there are better ratchets available such as the thin profile/next generation sets.

As stated in previous posts get both.

You can always add deep sockets should you need them

go with the 309 piece craftsman .If you brake a 12 point just take it back and ask if they will give you a 6 point in it's place I just took back a bunch of old 12 points because the krome was peeling off ( 25 year old socket) and ask for 6 points and he hooked me right up.
Now as for buying from lowes or home depot , They change there tools around so much that it is hard to just walk in and get an excact replacement after a couple years and you may need to send it back to the Man. for repair or replacement.
Just go with sears It's would be the easiest for some one starting out..
