Torque sticks

I've looked all over the web and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Does anyone make a 3/8" drive 100lb torque extension? If not, what are some good options in 1/2" drive? I have seen snap-on and the torquestick.com ones.

Please don't come in here and tell me to just use a torque wrench, not the answer I'm looking for.

We have one of the sets posted above in the shop i work at and they get the piss beat of them in a quicklane setting 6 days per week. We verify them once a week and after a year of use they are still accurate.

You should be able to get just the 100lb one through your local non-franchise tool guy.

Torque stick is not the answer either. They depend on impact wrenches that put out usual amounts of torque, say up to 250 or 300 lb/ft. Using a much lower powered 3/8 drive impact they probably won't come near working correctly.

You are much better off with a torque wrench. Get a regular old beam type, or a PI split beam and you won't have to be so concerned with calibration of it.

Are you using them for lug nuts? I bought a pair thinking I would be all careful and use them but now I just use the Impact gun till it hammers about twice and then tighten the rest with a torque wrench to 100lb. The torque wrench has moved the nut before clicking 100% of the time. I am using a 1/2" 18V Snap-On cordless with 400ft/lbs.

That being said I was happy with the Snap-on one and used an 80LB and then used the Torque wrench to get to 100. The reason I did this was I believed that over time the 80 would loose a bit of its flex and slowly start creeping up from 80 and I didn't want to over tighten. But maybe it is the opposite and it just gets farther from 80lbs.

Question is, why are you using a 3/8" impact instead of a 1/2" impact?

I use the Snap-On TSKT100TA, I never find myself skipping it.

I suppose if you had a powerful 3/8" impact (say, an MG325 or a 2115TiMAX) you could just put an impact adapter on it and use a 1/2" drive torque extension.

Torque sticks to get close, torque wrench to tighten/verify. Cars never leave my lot without all the lug nuts (even if we didn't touch them) being checked with a torque wrench.

How exactly do they work are they one piece or two? Any diagrams or anything how do you now when to stop hammering on it?

Calibrated steel rod. It will twist like a torsion bar when you exceed the rated torque, and will not tighten any further. You could put a 3/4" impact on an 80 ft-lb torque stick, and the lug nut will only be tightened about 80 ft-lb.

I have a few Snap-On brand torque sticks, they work well.
