I have 2 HF (I know...) torque wrench's. 1 is a 3/8 the other 1/2. Both only work in one direction clockwise. They will ratchet counter clockwise but will not release. In clockwise I have checked them against my beam types and they are very good. Is this normal for these HF torque wrench's?

Thanks,

Hiavia

It's normal for all click type torque wrenches. If by "release" you mean click when you reach set torque.

I'm sure there are some bi-directional torque wrenches in existence, but they're not the norm.

There are a lot of click type wrenchs that work in both directions. I am not familar with the HF wrenches but just about all the wrenches I've seen that are only for CW use have an arrow indicating direction on the handle.

Sturtevant-Richmont torque wrenches (clickers)(www.srtorque.com) is one brand that only torques CW. If you want CCW in their tools, you need to get the interchangable head tools, that will let you reverse the way the ratchet head is installed on the handle and will give you CCW torque abilities. Precision Instruments Split Beam torque wrenches are another that can only be used CW by the nature of their design and construction.

Some of the torque wrenches that do torque CCW are not as accurate (according to the published specs) as in the CW direction (an example might be 4% CW and 6% CCW accuracy range) I think some of the older Protos are like this.

All of my Snap-on clickers and digitals work in both clockwise and counter clockwise directions. The calibration certificates only list clockwise. I can't imagine why this is so. A limitation of the typical calibration set-up?
