Torque wrench storage

How do you guys store your torque wrenches? Do you keep them in your tool box or somewhere else? Do you leave them in the blow molded case or loose in a drawer?

I hate blow molded cases. But when it comes to torque wrenches, I don't like storing them loose in my box. They're akward and take up a lot of space.

If you have snap on, CT Tools makes foam to store them in. The Tech angles sit in my box like that. I have two other clickers banging around in the torque/measurement drawer, plus the 3/4 wrench/ratchet from PI in the case elsewhere. That you really want in a case. The clickers in my cart I have either pinned by other objects so they don't move much, or they just bang around in a drawer or side shelf because it's a PI split beam mostly for lug nuts.

I keep mine in their cases in a drawer along with all my other precision measurement tools.

Mine are all in their cases and stored in the toolbox. The 1" drive lives in its wooden crate.

The garage is not climate controlled, and while rare, we can occasionally get outside the storage temperature range for Techangles. And for what they cost, I don't like to take chances.

Mine sit in a drawer on a magnetic rail so they don't roll at all.. They are more likely to take a hit outside the box when being used then sitting in their dedicated spot in a drawer.

My two bicycle related ones in the bicycle toolbox, my other ones in a drawer of the main toolbox.

Only tools I’ve kept the cases in storage for, in case I have to ship them for repair or calibration when out of spec.

I store mine like Charlie's hat and stick.

I keep mine in the top drawer, upright in some 3D printed holders. The cases are a pain in the *** and take up too much space. I'm more likely to use them when they are easily accessible.

Mine ride to the job in a truck so they are in blow molded cases for protection. I do have some less used ones, dial, etc that stay in the shop box until needed.
3/4 drive is in a blow molded case stored vertically in a side cab.
A digital torque adaptor stays in my tool backpack.
I did make a wooden case for my 1/2 split beam.

I miss my long drawer. I made the mistake of selling my Mac box when I stopped working in the automotive industry.

Mine currently stay in their factory supplied blow molded cases in the bottom drawer of my cart. However, a You Tube Honda Tech, TE Videos has some simple, 3D printed holders that take up little space that he uses in his cart. They look promising to me if want something to keep the torque wrench in place with a minimal footprint.

When I used mine daily at work two of my three had a place in my box.
Now that they are used much less they reside on a shelf.

As @Nobody-named-Olli said, these were the only cases I saved.

In the blow molded case in a tool box drawer, backed off to the lowest torque rating (not to the stop limit). I have the older, early 90's, click type, but I don't use them enough to justify the new fancy ones.

Mine remain in their original blow molded cases in the bottom drawer of a tool chest. The attached garage is built into a hillside and remains fairly cool throughout the Ohio summers and winters. Anywhere between a low of 50 and high of 70.

I use each of the main ones several times a day so they stay handy. big split- beam sits right next to the tire gun with a 6" extension always on it. 5-75 3/8 sits in the ratchet drawer of the cart. 1/4 one sits with the 1/4" stuff. No blow mold cases. I am suspicious of techs who keep them way in the back of some bottom drawer and never use them.

The air powered 1/2” is permanently set to around 600ft/lbs, the air powered 1” is permanently set to around 2,200ft/lbs and the 1/2” electric is set to a modest 300ish ft/lbs. to get more sciency than that I math my fatass weight out to a certain length of pipe and stand on the end.

About the only thing I need to torque to spec are tractor lug bolts and disc blade gang nuts. The 1/2” uggadugga gets to 600 and that’s about perfect. The 1” does disc gangs well but I still gotta stand on a pipe for the big disc as that calls for 3,000+.

I do have a few actual torque wrenches and they’re stored in their blown molded cases on a shelf in my loft where they’re hard to get to as I rarely need them. They were expensive and I don’t need a random someone grabbing one to use it as a ratchet.

Mine reside in their blow-molded cases in the tool box. The main one is in the air tool drawer, basically as a reminder to torque the wheels. The 3/8" dr in/lb unit is in the ratchet drawer and the old Cman unit is sitting on the shelf, which can probably get moved to a drawer somewhere.

My Proto one is too long for my drawers so I mounted a magnet to the bottom of the case and hang it on the side of a cabinet.

Interesting note, HF at some point seems to have 86'd the Icon 1/4" torque wrench. No where to be found on their website.

Because it's a 3/8 drive in/lb. I don't think Icon ever had a 1/4" torque wrench.

Well, that explains why I can't find it. I knew they had a smaller wrench, but for some reason I thought it was 1/4" drive.

I keep mine in the cases but I like the foam idea above. I also keep my 1/2" in a blow mold because it goes back and forth to track.

I am thinking about this very issue as rearrange my box. The Pittsburgh ones in their case fit in the drawer but my 90s era Craftsman and newer 250 ft/lb Icon cases are too tall.

Looking at foam or a 3D printed holder.

But do appreciate everyone else sharing

I cut the tops off the blow molded case and leave them in the bottom.

I might try this. My torque wrench drawer is 42” x 22” and my collection in cases just barely fits with just 1 loose, but if I don’t close the cases, the lid will hit. And opening and closing them is an extra step. I don’t really need the protection of the closed case so I will think more about this idea.
